Why Is The God In The New Testament Different? by TheMadame(f): 3:20pm On Jun 22, 2023
Good day to my brothers and sisters in Christianity. May the Lord be with all of us. May the Lord refresh us and give us the knowledge to attain everlasting life in heaven.
Please I write to seek knowledge on a topic which distressed me. This is the dichotomy between the God of the new testament and God in the old testament of our holy Bible.
The God in the Old testament comes across as very angry over issues, while the God of new testament comes across as kind and loving . Benevolent, forgiving, blessing and the father of all creation, while the old testament of the Bible reflects God as only for the nation of Israel. I welcome any explanation with Bible passages to enlighten
God bless as you contribute to this discourse. Apologies for poor spelling and please let us avoid insulting language.
Thank you.

Life and consciousness exist in two polarity...

Something like Negative and Positive,

Day and Night

Good and Bad

Gods and Devil's

Angels and Demons

Both conflicting energy of the universe are needed for a perfect balance

YahWeh is the God of the Jews of the bible, Eledumare is the God of Yorubas, while Okike abiama is the God of Igbos

Colonial masters needed to unify us all and had to make a single God or trinity

No Christian can answer this your question. They will only dance around the question and tell you that god works in a mysterious way. Or they will start a fight to disrupt and disorganise your thread because they don't have any answers.

Only Moses got a little view of the God of Jews, Abraham simply heard from him and got message

Old testament was written by many people, New testament also have many people

It was written over several decades

They all have divergent views

I don't think a God that made earth, moon, sun and all universe can be easily accessible to humans

Op. Read! Read! Read!.
There were merciful gods in the old testament as well as angry gods in the New testament

Acts 5:9
Then Peter said to her, “How is it that you have agreed together to test the Spirit of the Lord? Look, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out.” 10 Then immediately she fell down at his feet and breathed her last.

Acts 13: 11
And now, indeed, the hand of the Lord is upon you, and you shall be blind, not seeing the sun for a time.”

I'm only interested in a concept you built in your head, through indoctrination; that OT = Angry God , while NT= forgiven God
Which is "fallacy" according to your good book.

The right question is;
Why are there different gods in the old testament as well as new testament.

Some claim they saw him in OT, others didn't in OT, some were forgiven in OT others weren't in same OT.

There is only one God in the old testament and the new testament. Only the character is different. You are confusing me with this your many God's.

I just hope this is not another disguised atheist trying to start a fruitless and endless argument.

According to the Author of the Bible there was a plan to redeem mankind right after the event in the garden of Eden, God's plan was to choose one nation through which a role model will be born, this role model will replace Adam and lead OBEDIENT mankind in doing God's will.
Satan knew the plan all along so he is working round the clock to disrupt God's plan because he knew that if God should change the plan it means God has failed in the process of salvation so Satan keeps misleading the chosen nation in order not to be a good place for the Christ to begin the salvation work.
That's why God was exterminating anyone that may serve as Satan's agent in the old testament as time is going and God is eager than ever to end all badness.
So it's the same God but the reason why He stopped being brutal is because Jesus has come and has successfully commissioned the work that will see millions throughout the earth to God's kingdom.
That's why Jesus was begging his father saying:

Please forgive them because they don't grasp all these arrangement you have put in place to save them! Luke 23:34

In his final message to obedient mankind Jesus said:

Do not seal up the words of the prophecy of this scroll, for the appointed time is near. Let the one who is unrighteous continue in unrighteousness, and let the filthy one continue in his filth; but let the righteous one continue in righteousness, and let the holy one continue in holiness" Revelations 22:10-11

When he was with his disciples in the flesh Jesus told them a parable about the salvation plan how he has come to commission a movement that will gather all obedient mankind under one umbrella, but Satan quickly implanted his agents right in the midst of Jesus' movement so the angels in heaven who knew the implication of Satan's agents asked Jesus if they should swing into action to start exterminating anyone who will serve as Satan's agents within the movement but Jesus told them to allow all to grow together after all God has poured out His active force which will continue guiding faithful people but when it's time to destroy Satan's agents Jesus will lead the angels in heaven to separate the weeds from the fine seeds the fine seeds will be stored up in Jesus' ban while all the weeds will be burnt up! Matthew 13:24-30

God bless you and may you have PEACE! smiley

It is like you are seeing atheists in your dreams. Check my post history on Nairaland. I always ask questions on religious issues that bother me. I a Christian but I am not a mindless fanatic. I read my bible and ask questions to build my own christianity.
Thanks for your effort. Even though it is not very satisfactory in my opinion. Can you please support with Bible passages?

Why does the God of the old testament appear to have a different character from the God of the new testament?

I have answered that but it seems you wanted a short answer when the question can't be answered in few sentences.

God is the same Character always it's because most people don't know what Jesus came to establish that's why they think this way.

God will destroy all evildoers so that obedient mankind can enjoy everlasting life in Paradise but before then a case need to be settled:
Will humans do God's will wholeheartedly?
A role model need to set the pace so before the arrival of this role model anyone standing in the way to disrupt God's plan will be taken away fast fast that's why you see God differently in the old testament.

To illustrate: imagine a ruler who wants to save his people from Invaders but the Invaders have insiders working with them so the King was picking up the insiders and killing them, surely anymore who don't know the good will of this king will see him as a monster but by the time peace is achieved in his domain all his subjects will understand that it was the bad eggs he was removing for the good ones to enjoy his rulership! smiley

Simple.

It is because what is wrongly called old testatament shows contains the relationship of God with man when the relationship was new.

Exactly like a new relationship between a man and a woman.

But the more the relationship is bad therefore the parties must drift apart and relate less.

That is why there is a difference which is why God's Last Word technically to all men is "it is finished"!

So, it is still the same God Who flowed and acted according to how the relationship with man deteriorated until the present situation of complete and absolute silence.

Does this sound logical to you. This cannot even convince a three year old child.
How can this mumbo-jumbo be the answer to why the god in the old testament is different from the god in the new testament of the Bible?
This is how they drive believers to atheism and to become agnostics with their zero answers.
Why not keep quiet if you do not know the answer to a question?
