Does it mean that most of these unemployed youths creating nuisances on Nairaland can not lecture at the University for a living?

They better make some courses to be based on e-learning and computer will automatically mark students work so the disadvantages of lecturers leaving the country won't be relevant.

If the lecturers are japaing as claimed in the report, then why aren’t the affected universities recruiting new lecturers to fill in the space. We have many PHD holders who are jobless looking for jobs.

1.Having a phd does not necessarily mean an interest in teaching. Some use the PhD to get an advantage in their careers.

2.To be a lecturer, you got to have an interest in teaching. Not everyone has that interest.

3.Promotion in university as a lecturer is by publication, publication. Not everyone wants to get on the treadmil.

4.Funding. Oga VC may need 50 lecturers in his university, but government would give him cash for ten. Where is Oga VC going to find money for the remaining 40?

It's a good idea, but at the end, education budget would be somehwere around 10 trillion naira. If not more. Nigeria can't afford that. (note our budget is 22 trillion naira).

(We should pay our politicians less though).

You will bring them onboard before the experience now, Just recruit that is all, too many jobless at home with PhD. Don't blame any Japa or anything. Some schools have not recruit in last 5-10 years and you are not expecting shortage.

Buhari finished Nigeria patapata actually. Wonder how some actually voted in APC again! Shows how mentally weak an average black man is. An average black man will continue to be conquered by others becus on sense, we dont have. Never in the history of Nigeria has there been this level of running out of the country. Started with Buhari led APC.

Lecturers are leaving and you are refusing to employ more hands? So many jobless people are looking for lecturing jobs... Employ them

Federal government has so frustrated the system such that University lacks the autonomy to employ staffs.

In my alma mata, at my department it’s just about 1/3rd of the staffs both academic and non academic that is left.
The system is gradually dying.

Kind of old news

There has always been a lecturer shortage in Nigerian universites for decades. Not enough lecturers, not enough space, not enough funding.

The above is from 2008

The above is from 2013.

Honestly, I don tire for these reports. It's like clockwork, they come at least once a year..lol.

The fact is, there are too many students, too few lecturers. Poor funding means unis cannot employ more lectuers.

So what is the solution?

It's those small universities that will be affected badly because some of their great lecturers will use the opportunity to move to prestigious universities with openings.

Incidentally, this is not new thing. The only difference between then and now is that we now have a lot of tertiary institutions. Check my signature for free stuffs!

if there is shortage of lecturers because of the japa syndrome, then, the FG should start employing. After all, there isn't shortage of Nigerians who needs well paying jobs. It's that simple.

100% Japa-fied
Why keep working in an environment or country whose successive administrators do not value education?
Just take a look at ASUU for instance...a former president setup a committee in a bid to look into the lingering strikes and resolve the matter to a logical conclusion!
The same committee made recommendations and the same presidency refused to abide by its own committee but rather proceeded to use the industrial courts and infiltrate ASUU using the divide and conquer strategy!

Currently, even the lecturers that will likely be recruited to fill the void left by the japa-ed lecturers will also be low-key planning their exit from Nigeria very soon!
That's the kind of country we want to build where there is little or no value for our educational sector!

IPPIS is never and will never be a reason for any sensible person rather IPPIS encourage more people to be employ as it gives no room for double payment of lecturers salary than the former Gifmis platform.
