uncle u: I think the complaint about treatment of Nigerians at the American embassy is at times blown out of proportion.
My last experience was May this year at the Lagos center.I had a 6.30am appointment and was there by 6am. I saw more than 500 Nigerians already waiting. Some had 6am appointment,6.30am,7am in that order.
When it got to our turn,we lined up and entered the main complex. We passed through the differnt steps from finger prints to the short interviews lasting less than 2 to 3 minutes.
The guys were profesionals and treated everybody with respect. The interviews were in the open so you could hear the next person.
They gave about 40% of people I saw that day visa. It was simple. Ones you have travelled outside the country before and earns upto five hundred thousand naira monthly you sure will get a tourist visa for your holidays.
You cannot be earning fifty thousand naira monthly and claim you are going on holidays and expect anybody to believe you.

If that is the way things are now, then good. I have had the impression since 2005 that American VOs are unnecessarily difficult denying legitimate requests without bothering to look at documentations bc they believe anything can be forged in Nigeria. I had requested a tourist visa for self and wife same year. As at that time we had been to Europe at least twice, I had a robust account (since I not dey do things wey not get head)and all that usual gbogboe that makes you a fit and proper person (more than necessary). Anyway visa was denied me and I was asked to reapply in 6mths time-that was 7yrs ago.

I know a number of other peeps, responsible, very well placed in society and extremely comfortable who have been denied for no apparent reason other than the fact that the VO can. Apart from my self pride that was dented I cant say I missed anything. Even more so when I consider what return ticket could have cost me and other expenses, a lot of savings.

You're very correct, US embassy staffs usually have no apparent reasons for refusing people like you and many more who may be genuine visitors and financially comfortable, they do it just because they can.
I remember when my brother applied 9 years ago he wa refused despite having been to Canada, hold a good job and financially comfortable. But I know a lot of peeps that got the visa out if sheer luck, in most cases these lucky ones are usually the potential migrants who will choose not to return to Nigeria.
As much as I believe it's within the right of US visa staffs to grant visa or deny it, the method they have been using is not only laughable it is nothing but a gamble. For this reason I have never applied for a US visa, there is no level playing ground in their application process its just a mere gamble.

My most embarrassing moment was when i went first time in 2009, i was forming for one chic and she was also doing notice me. then it was the business visa section, and they asked me how much was my monthly basic, and not my monthly net. because it was like 145k then, i was ashamed of answering, so i asked, yu mean net salary? so that i could tell her 500k or so. so she repeated basic monthly.......i wan melt cos it was now obvious i could not make shakara for the girl again. my flag don fall. but things have changedd and travelling has been frequent.

You do not have to earn up to 500k monthly b4 ur granted a tourist visa oh! Even those who earn way more dan that have been denied. And those who earn less than half of 500k monthly have been given visa strait up, ok? I'm speaking from experience as well.

It looks like the more decent and comfortable you appear to them, the more likely you will be denied. Those ECOs or is it visa officers they call them just like to play god. Sometimes I feel well it is the age thing or applicant youthfulness, even then you cannot rationalize most decisions they make at the American Embassy. Personally I have no special need to visit that country. I consider their visa a means to further embellish my passport because there is nothing I can get there I cannot get any where else.

It means they are very much back to their old ways. Or they probably want you and your husband to invest more in their 'visa application fund'. But I wont let myself be fooled like Okija juju.

Never had one but saw this dude some yrs back with a very big framed picture,it was funny and i had to ask why he had come to the embassy with such huge framed photo meant for a large sitting room.i jokingly asked if he was going to mount it inside the reception of US embassy.he laughed and said he had to come there with as much documents and evidence as he could, apparently that was a family photo of him with some relative he resides in the states.
