@ FKBZ

What type of car do you have in mind? My best advice is that if you can spare a few more, you can actually get a car that is not accidented but as your interest is in salvage vehicles, contact me. If the make and model of what you want is close to me I will go and inspect it before purchasing. I usually buy running vehicles with minimal damage, shipping inclusive of towing to port of sailing will cost you $1300, when your bill of Laden is available, I send it to your location or your agent in Nigeria and it cost $100 for next day service. Also note that seeing vehicles below $1,000 does not mean that is the final sale price. On the bidding day, when people start to bid, the prices shoot up or if nobody is interested, you will get it for that price probably. Kindly see link below to see schedule of fees for price range of cars you buy.

@Lotannam below is what you requested.

SO IF I SHOULD RAISE UP TO 1500 DOLLARS(WHICH SHOULD COVER ALL THE COST PLUS SHIPPING) WHAT BRAND CAN U GET FOR ME AND WOULD IT BE SHIPPED TO MY LOCATION EXACTLY OR I HAVE TO GO AND CLEAR IT AT THE PORTS IN NIGERIA.

WHAT IS BILL OF LADEN.

AM A LADY SO DONT HAVE MUCH KNOWLEDGE OF THIS.

IF I SEE WHAT I LIKE THEN MAYBE WE COULD DO BUSINESS.

Shipping alone to Nigeria will take $1100.
You haven't thought of inland trucking, auction fees and the small commission to Tope before the car.
You might need to sit back and think again. Unless u mean someone should dash you a car.

You can't blame her completely. She must have seen a fraudulent place where she was told, she can get a car for $200 grin grin grin grin.

Just like someone asking me authoritatively last week to get him a Totota Highlander 2008 for less than 1.8M including clearing fee. The person claimed someone offered it to him at the price and he is looking for a cheaper price cheesy cheesy cheesy cheesy. I told him to buy it without questioning and bring to me to resell at 2.5M grin grin grin.

Such cases are what you deal with when it comes to some people buying cars. They think, its picked up for free on the streets of New York cheesy cheesy grin grin grin

My dear, if having a wide mouth means explaining to you why your $1500 won't work, then i will gladly accept.
If it means telling you the things you need to consider in addition to the price of the car, then i can't agree less with you; I HAVE A WIDE MOUTH cheesy cheesy grin

Don't take it personal. You admitted you didn't know much about cars. Here's someone giving you the basic things you need to think about, free of charge and you taking an offence.

Anyway, it is a free world, a free forum. Ask your question. Someone will definitely answer you. How they choose to answer and what they tell you is out of your hands cheesy cheesy

@ FKBZ, the $1,500 you mentioned would be sufficient for shipping and 1-2 other logistics not including the cost of your car, auction fees etc.. A bill of laden is document that a company issues as evidence for receipt of goods/cargo and this document has to be presented upon collection of your goods at its final destination.

As Fhemmmy said, we need to educate people with respect.

hello fellow nairalanders,i really need your candid opinion and advice on this before i do it
i am about to purchase a clean maxima 2000 model from auction export which goes for about $1950,and they said the ground transportation is $850 and when i did the rough estimation on there site on how much its will cost me to ship to port lagos, they gave me rough estimate of about $1250,which they added the the ground transportation to become $2000
please my question is am i going to pay for anything again when the car arrives nigeria and do you think the risk really worth it going to that extent to purchase a car which anything can happen like natural disaster in which no insurance company can indemnify against it...i will like people to enlighten me more about this and how to go about it..please its urgent to know if to take an option of going to Cotonou will be the better option for me or importing from the auction company...thanks so much as am about to read from cars guru on nairalanders..

2 payments you need to look at or worry about:
Service Charge of Auction export - Did not see that in any of your numbers.
Clearing cost in Nigeria and that is normal.
However, who is paying for the cost of sending BOL to Nigeria?
I will advice you send it str8 to Lagos for clearing so as to be sure you cleared it the right way

Why buy from Auction export when you can get similar deal from dealers in the USA. Is their charges part of the $1950? Be sure that after buying, you will still have to pay clearing fee in Lagos. Even if you go to Cotonou, you will still pay custom duty except you want to go the "fayawo" route.

Buying from USA is good and worth the risk but you have to buy from a respectable source that can be held liable to any shortcomings in the process. In the event, you go ahead with it, prepare clearing fee of about 220k for the ride.

The ground transport fee is too high and not worth it.
Check for another Nissan Maxima that's close to an exit port so that ground transportation fees will reduce.
You could buy from the east coast, Texas, Alabama, Lousiana.
Avoid California, Arizona, Wyoming, Utah e.t.c to save cost.
Wish u all the best!

I am not sure if that is the right way to put it, however, you are right to find the ride close to port or like someone suggested to him.

The reason I said its too high was because I was comparing costs.
If he was buying a car worth $5000 and above, paying $850 for ground transport wouldn't matter.
But buying a car of $1950 and paying $850 for ground transport aint right to me considering he could get same car in another location which will cost far less to transport.
Opinions could differ though...

I do feel you, Sir . . . I dont equate cost of transporting the ride to the port to the value of the car, but as to what i am saving, I do agree with you that the cost of buying that ride from Auction export is way too much and not worth it, but my brother, sometimes, it is easier for people to learn and his question was not if the cost is reasonable but if he will be paying anything extra at the end of the day.
Except a buyer made me to pay such, i will NEVER pay such for a car to delvier to the port, only on Trucks (Dump Trucks) do i pay so much.

Depends on the level of damage you are looking at. Are they runners or non-runners? If they are non-runners, they will have to be containerised. Which of the auctions are you interested in?
A running vehicle can be shipped via ro-ro provided the accident is not beyond what the shipping company can accept.

Does the info provided about the cars on the salvage auctions detail the problems with the cars. So one can estimate cost of restoration

Depending on the auction you wish to buy, some give an outline of the problems while others you can estimate from the displayed pictures.

I will advice u to stick to these 3 auctions; IAAI, Manheim and Copart.
With them, you know what you are up against and not some other dodgy looking deals.
In the event you need access, to these get in touch.

My oga.. Thanks for the info. What abt Auction Export• Are they in the same category as the ones you mentioned below. I have visited their site and Copart. Auction Export had this buy now button which I think is cool if I find what I want and don't want to be involved in a bid... IMO
But then am new to all these but want to test the ground

I actually sent you a text on saturday. Let me know if you got it and when best to call you or if you did not get it. Let me have a number I can get you on.

Auction Export source their cars from the 3 auctions i mentioned above.
They are what you call, Market Makers'. Some sort of distributors.

You can call me at any time before 10pm. I am not sure i got your sms.
Send me a mail if not sure. They are as good as sms as i respond almost immediately/

chucks2013: Can one physically inspect these cars on these 3 auctions or even the ones on auction export.

Yes you can. But there are encumbrances.
Who will have the time to travel from Texas to NY to examine or assess a car?
Who will bear the cost?

The pictures on the internet do the trick
Or, in the case of Manheim, buy an inspection service to do an inspection on the unit.
If the result is unsatisfactory, you can ask for a refund. This is ONLY applicable to MANHEIM!

Once again, I can Inspect any vehicle if the Copart location is at 2020 U.S. 301 Riverview, FL 33578. This is right by my house. There are others e.g 8100 McCoy Rd, Orlando, FL 32822 which is roughly 1hr 40 mins from me. Get in touch if you see what you like and we can discuss fees and charges etc.

Want to understand the difference (we understand the costs very clearly of Copart and IAA) of buying cars from Copart vs IAA -- would be very useful to hear from somebody who has done buying of few cars from each of Copart or IAA. I have bought many many cars at copart and know about them well; have no idea of IAA and assessing if I should join them. Primarily it is for salvage title cars that are rear ended 2009+ cars (like Maxima, Impala, Cruze, sentra, focus).

Thanks
