Biochemistry derives its name from the words "biology" and "chemistry" and as such is interchangeably referred to as Biological Chemistry (Biochemistry). Its a field of science that pertains to take the chemical processes that take place inside a living organism, as well as those that relate to living things.
The study of BCH helps one understand the actual concept of functioning of various body processes and physiology of plants and animals. BCH in general deals with enzymes, hormones, carbohydrates, amino acids, fats, proteins, DNA, RNA, pigments, etc. It describes their origin, formation, functions, deficiencies, symptoms, etc.
Even though BCH doesn't obviously seem to be the pillar of all sciences, it is actually the bedrock and the most versatile course ever. Its importance covers so many areas; like in medicine, nursing, agriculture, nutrition, pharmacy, plants, industry; etc.
Now, i wish to use this medium to "coagulate" all the Nigerian biochemists, both professional and prospective. Lets talk about what we know how to do best. Lets teach one another, lets get to know one another, lets talk biochemistry.

I'll start by introducing myself.
I'm Sepp, Biochemist, 300L, UNN. Lets get it flowing.

wow! I'm happy too. I like ur aspirations. There are so many answers to provide, but i'll start by telling u the requirements for admission into my school.
The "average" score for biochemistry is usually between the range of 230-250, dependin on relative general performance of students. And when i say average, i mean the average of ur jamb and post ume scores, so it doesn't really matter which is higher, as long as ur jamb is above 200 (as usual) and ur post ume score is above 180. But students are usually adviced to get high scores in jamb, so that it will boost ur chances of gettin a very high average, gettin high scores in UNN post ume aint easy at all, not that it's impossible. Biochemistry is studied for 4years in my school, thou some schools, even in Nigeria study it for 5 years.

good question. The truth is that, everyone in Nigeria sees education as means of gettin a better livelihood, but dat orientation has really changed our mentality towards education.
Anyways, biochemistry is a very verstile course, not just being versatile, but very lucrative. There many job opportunities that await biochemists, but one romantic truth is dat, u need to get an M.sc to have a higher rate of employability. But that not withstanding, u can get a very good job wif ur degree alone.

You can work in the hospital as a laboratory supervisor, a laboratory technician, as a biochemist and even as consultant (but wif an added degree). You can work in different kinds of companies, like in textile, cosmetic, plastic, food industries, and in pharmaceutical companies. You can work in chemical manufacturin firms as well,You can work in agricultural firms, even in research institutes. You can as well work in colleges and universities, and in health and agricultural ministries.
Bro, the list is endless, these are the ones i can say for now!

I'd admit chemistry was never my strong point sha. Bt I reckoned I'd make up for that in the biology part...u get? But the way the chemical pathways and chemistry jargons take rub me for ground ehn!! Was rily disheartening mehn. I had endless sleepness nights thinking about my grades. Thank God it's over now over sha. I'm jejely switching to MCB/parasitology or any biology dominated field for my pgd/msc.

Before you go for service, a list will be released where you can make necessary corrections to your name, age et al. I suggest you open a thread stating your worries in the NYSC section.

medical biochemistry is one of the branches of biochemistry, just like the applied biochemistry, pharmaceutical biochemistry, food biochemistry, nutritional biochemistry, industrial biochemistry, biotechnology, e.t.c. These are few examples of the branches of biochemistry. Some schools offer one of the branches, like delsu offers medical biochem, unizik offers applied biochem, and the list goes on.but my school does it general, as general biochemistry, nai make the course dey hard for UNN.

The M.Sc simply means "Master of Science". Its just another degree after the first degree, which is B.Sc...(Bachelor of Science). Thanks bro.

i will like to use this medium to announce to you guys of the annual Ngerian Soceity of Biochemistry Students (NSBS) National Convention @UNIPORT, which holds from the 7th-9th or October, 2014. This a medium where all nigerian biochemists, "great eminents and great metabolites" converge to discuss national issues concerning our department, its welfare and progress. You'l get to meet different calibre of people, students, professors and alumni. Our national election will still hold there and then. Accomodation is free. But transport, feeding and registration are personally sponsored. I will like to meet nairalanders there. Thanks in anticipation.
