Go for what your heart desires. I suggest you meet a carrier consultant, but in my humble opinion you can go for an undergraduate degree in biochemistry and then Master in Microbiology. Job prospects depend on you.

Microbiplogy is better. You have a lot of options after graduation, food microbiology is one very applicable branch of mcb at least in Naija. In mcb you work with things that you can see and touch. Studying Bch in Naija is simply wack, it is simply a "CRAMMING TRAINING", and it is like that in almost all schools. It is so stressful and it is not worth the wahala. In Nigeria, a microbiologist can do everything that a biochemist can do; but a biochemist cannot do all a microbiologist can do. I am a Biochemist.

...Both are good. But going with what you said about job prospects and money in your pocket in Nigeria, then I would advice microbiology because it gives you a wide area of job prospect from food industries, medical, agriculture, environmental, research institute, government etc.... Biochemistry also has applications in these fields but Nigeria has not yet gotten to the stage of applying most of the outcome of biochemistry.....all you will do I cram, cram, and cram pathways.

Thanks for your response

it depends on the industry where you find your self as well as how big is the firm.
and mind you.......getting lucrative salary in microbiology or biochemistry is not with your BSc. but from masters upward.

In MCB for instance what branch would you advise someone to specialise, I was told Medical MCB is the "inn thing" do you assent to that? and have you an idea how long a masters in the field could take? takes a bunch

Chemistry is better than MCB and BCH while MCB is better than BCH but you can go for BCH if you really wanted medicine but couldn't get it.

As for the branch of MCB to go for in M.Sc, it depends on the one you were better at during your undergraduate days.

The length of M.Sc depends on your school, but then if you really want to go for M.Sc the best bet is to start, the earlier you start, the earlier you finish.

Any more doubt?

^^^ You'll have to go for internship in medical lab (NISLT) or M.Sc Medical Microbiology to be certified/qualify for a job as a medical microbiologist. Your B.Sc Microbiology does not really qualify you for that.

I'm a final year student of Microbiology currently working on my Medical Microbiology project topic.
Medical and Industrial Microbiology tops the list. Last year I did my SIWES programme at a hospital in PH city and boy! it sure did open my eyes.
Med. Microbiology is at par with Pharmacy and Medicine when it comes to employment opportunities or self-employment. And we are accorded nearly as much respect as medicine student though.
By the way, even medicine students sometimes end up majoring in medical microbiology. I nearly chose biochemistry, I'm glad I didn't.

thanks alot, but can you throw more light please

Yeah, I know. Like I stated earlier, I'm doing my project topic is related to it. Even at that it doesn't stop one from working as med. microbiologist.

It does, at B.Sc level u r just a Microbiologist @ most. You have not specialized in any area but you can be a lab assistant/technologist though.
