The rich gets secret trials for their crimes no matter the weight of the crime committed why the poor will be put to ignominy for minor crimes. .SMH for this country.

But is't suppose to be a secret trial or prosecution? This is a national issue and everybody is keen to know how its been handled because this havoc is causing the nation to loose their love ones almost everyday! Why would the status of a man make him above the law of his own country, one thing I strongly believe is that, man can never be like God. God is watching since the poor don't have right whatsoever in this very country (nigeria).

The openness of judicial proceedings is a fundamental principle enshrined in Article 6(1) of the European Convention on Human Rights (the right to a fair trial). This underpins the requirement for a prosecution witness to be identifiable not only to the defendant, but also to the open court. It supports the ability of the defendant to present his case and to test the prosecution case by cross-examination of prosecution witnesses. In some cases it may also encourage other witnesses to come forward.
The principle of open justice can sometimes act as a bar to successful prosecutions, particularly in homicides, organised crime and gun crime. Witnesses may fear that if their identity is revealed to the defendant, his associates or the public genernally then they or their friends and family will be at risk of serious harm.

Protecting those who want to serve as witnesses or those giving evidences is understandable.
Secretly carrying out a trial is what is beyond me no matter the reason.

I thought the explicit and intrinsic importance of the court is to openly try and convict criminals, send them to jail so that it will serve as a deterrent to others.

I believe GEJ is trying but he is just so weak.
There are a lot of funny things about his government.

If you will agree with me, you will realize that corrupt people/ politicians under GEJs government are left alone without trial. They go free.
He doesn't have balls but he is a good man.
Nigeria doesn't want a good man... we "NEED" someone with balls. Someone who can act, try corrupt people and nail it on the head plain and simple and live with the consequences.

And if u were to be a witness in such case, will u do so if it were to be made open?
Remember u nt dealing with only Ndume, u also dealing with the terrorists and d witnesses, who's life and that of their family is at risk.

If u make it partly secrete, some pple will now know wen to hunt down the suspected witnesses. Dont forget some journalsists are boko sympathisers!

Why are you people always wont to blame and criticize every time? Who told you that secret trials are not carried out on some categories of criminals all over the world? UK, U.S, and other advance countries use secret trials especially when the open trial of a person is considered a threat to national security etc. Secret trials are not meant to witch hunt the accused if that is what you are implying by your criticism, but to protect the witnesses and above all for national security.

Plenty dummies here. Make it an open trial and the witnesses will not turn up. Nobody wants to be openly testifying against a terror group.
And for the folks accusing the FG for this, also remember that if they decided not to try guy at all, nobody will be discussing it as we are doing now. It seems these APC e-maggots have their brains and objectivity snatched away on recruitment by Lai Mohd.

Descartes:
The federal government has asked a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja to conduct a secret trial for Senator Aliyu Ndume, who is standing trial for terrorism charges. Ndume, a senator from Borno State is standing trial before Justice Gabriel Kolawole for failing to inform law enforcement agencies of the activities
of the outlawed Boko Haram sect. Counsel representing the federal government in the matter, E.A. Orji, in a motion dated September 23, begged the court to protect the identity of the remaining witness that are to give evidence in the matter. “We urge the court to exclude members of the public from the trial. We also want the court to protect the identities of the remaining witnesses that shall give evidence in this case. The fundamental rights of the accused has not been violated because his counsel is represented and has not in any way been excluded from the matter. It is in the interest of national security and public safety that the motion should be granted,” he said. The accused’s counsel, Mr. I. Amaza, in his submission told the court that the request would violate his client’s right to fair hearing. He told the court to turned down the request of the prosecution and continue with the trial. After listening to both counsel, Justice Kolawole adjourned the case to October 24 for ruling.http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/terrorism-fg-asks-court-for-secret-trial-of-ndume/191914/
