I must commend your initiative Afunky.I accidentally stumbled on the page and was impressed with your passion to know more about the great profession, its prospects and its relevance.

I am a young graduate of Food Science and Technology from FUTA and currently pursuing my second degree at the prestigious University of Ibadan. I didnt plan to study the course ab initio but was persuaded to go for it having been enlightened on the lofty prospects of the profession.

As regards,IT placement and employment,I may say I have had a fair share though hoping for more big take.I did my Industrial Training at Nigerian Breweries and also had the company as my place of primary assignment during my service in Enugu.

Unless you have long years of industrial experience,a fresh young graduates of FST can only be absorbed as Management Trainees in any of the notable food companies around Nb,Unilever,Nestle,Cadbury,Guinness,UAC among others. Getting a placement as a trainee may come with competition from graduates of other profession. Though some jobs are reserved for graduates of FST in food companies but not only exclusive to them.
I once argued with my biochemist friend who maintained that 'a biochemist is well informed on food analysis that a food scientist ' Such is what we have now, you can find Chemists,Microbiologist,Biochemists competing with you for a space in food company where they too can creditably well.

Keep the thread alive
I will tell co 'FSTarians' to join
pls reply bro, how did you go about getting your IT placement?

I'm a graduate of food science. It's a marketable course and its starting to gain recognition in Nigeria very well. The only problem I see is that graduates from related disciplines such as biochemistry, microbiology and industrial chemistry tend to also compete for the same jobs you apply for. That's why you have to do your best in school so that you can stand out and with God on your side, you will get a befitting job.

Also, prepare to take courses in food microbiology and food chemistry. In some schools, its under the faculty of engineering so you will be taking engineering courses such as engineering maths, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics and engineering drawing. The course itself is wide but I have no regrets studying it. An advantage is that in your postgraduate studies, you can conveniently diversify into other related fields like nutrition and dietiecs, food and industrial microbiology, consumer related courses due to your vast knowledge. I have a friend who is doing her masters in the US now in quality control and consumer satisfaction... Can't really remember the full name of the course now but she's doing well in it.

Wishing you all the best as you pursue your dreams.

Hello Everyone, @Bibol thanks for your contribution, @ sukerpunch please don't be sad, frustrated or discouraged Food science and technology is a very good course please read through this thread from the beginning.
@pwreshbawz hi dearie, I got your mail, sorry I haven't replied, tests and preparations for exams which starts 3rd week in November have taken my time.
You asked for textbooks that you can use in Fst well for now, what we are given as note in class is enough for our exams but there are times that you would like to read more about an aspect of the course, there are textbooks you can buy at the bookshop.

. Thank you dear, exams have not started yet, it will start November 17th, next week is the last week of lecture, then 1 lecture free week. It is almost here. Oau is trying to make up the academic calendar so that you guys can resume by may. This semester is short. How are you doing, I hope home is not too boring?

Last questions @Afunkybaby,

Since I was offered FST in OAU. Is the course 'divided' into Food science and Food technology and when do we get to choose? I hope you get my question

Which one are you doing now? What level are you in?

Morning dear, I get your question. In OAU Food science and technology is divided in 2, Food Science and Food Engineering. You don't get to choose, 1 is given to You automatically, I was given Food Science and I am in 200 level.
