The students' behaviour was rude. But the school is also at fault because they did not keep to time. Even dignitaries should learn to keep to time when they give speeches (which are most times unnecessary stories). Keeping to time shows discipline. Guests who come from far places and need to go back to their various destinations shouldn't be kept beyond the time a program is supposed to end. People have other engagements to attend to also.

I think the punishment should be reviewed to something lighter but if they refuse, unfortunately you will have to pay so that you don't waste one year at home.
yea a ceremonial program buh d point is it was meant to hold frm 7am to 1pm now u blame d student for leaving d hall cos of d stupidity displayed on d part of d school and its speakers!if dey had conscience and a thinking faculty dey shld knw dis student v ppl frm different state..far and near waiting to c der luved 1s and also planning on leaving dat same day! Nonsense!

That is why I said the school is at fault. If you read my post well, you'll see that I blame the school more. By the way, I feel 7.am to 1pm(6hrs) is too long for a graduation ceremony. When I did mine then, it was just a 3 and half hours ceremony.

What a school! But I think, this issue would be better handled by the SUG or the Parents/Guardians of the affected graduands.

This is a case for the parents to handle,
@op incase you've forgotten, BU is a private university

PS* There are rules and regulations in federal schools as well, and some level of discipline, just a little more freedom* If you were one of the parents and had a flight to catch or some other pressing issues to attend to, would you have stayed? If all the parents had left, who would the school punish? Call it rude but I like the fact that the graduating students bruised the school's ego by walking out on a meaningless program.
anyways, people have different up bringing. My father will send me back in if I was among the students. Its your child's convocation ceremony! Sercrifising a day wouldn't hurt (it was just delayed for an hour o not 5hrs) anyways, its not abt the parents, I think the OP just wants to use that to make pple reason with him. The main issue is the thing was boring and they were tired, so they left.
And its 25k we talking abt here not 100. Some pple spend 25k in 2days in sch. So just pay the money sad

It was raining heavily that day i remember cause i was also pissed that they took so long to finish and people who came by 10 had to pack far and had to either charter a bike or walk down to the hall(very far in case y'll don't know) in the rain btw... not because the talk was boring(which it was) but those that stay far away nko that just wanted to say congrats and see the graduates face should they have waited for the dignitaries or whatever to finish their useless tales from the past? but then again it is a private uni so OP you gats no choice, just close your eyes and pay it.

If it were me, I'd walk out.

But then I'll like to remind us, that certificates are given out, and on it, it states 'in character and learning'

So, as per character, you're wrong.

They were wrong to have delayed, you were wrong to have left, These two wrongs don't sum up to a right, however, they're the authorities, they have the whip.

I would have supported your cause, but for a reason. ....your school organised a program for you, you decided to leave to snap pictures and eat leaving the guests to talk to plastic chairs as what they have to say wasn't important. ...assuming there was to be an exam after, would you have left? Assuming it was a 4 unit course, would you have left? And you have the right to come here and be screaming Christian school. .....Na the Christian vex me self, them force you to buy form? Them come your house come call you? 25k might be excessive, you guys need to plead not be shouting Christian school. I for like see nda student waka leave parade ground on pop day o, cause the speech too long. Mtchew.

What is this one saying. So you are telling that you attended all the events that your school to you to. Abi cant you just keep quite if you have nothing relevant to say. It is idiots like you that cannot sit down and attend a 2 hours lecture and you are here forming saint.

RUBBISH we African people and time.....
Thats not fair......
We all complain about our their beloved country but all these injustice start from places like this it is so sad that some people say its a private university and nothing can be done ..... like really? NONSENSE
someone tell me we don't have right anywhere anymore not even when things are so obviously wrong.....
Anybody with little opportunity to reach a little height with some power start treating people under them like trash..... the fact that you are my boss my lecturer my VC or my pastor just call it whatever doesn't make you better than me you are just there today and I can be there tomorrow lets all start treating each other with fearness ..... these all start from little things.
THEY HAVE THE FULL RIGHT TO LEAVE AT THE STATED TIME IF THE PROGRAM TURNS UNENDING
Am sure even in church God is not angry with you if you decide to leave when the pastor did not stop at the right time..... we Africans needs to start keeping to time.
Am sure the school too will learn some lessons against next time unless the are acting stupid.....

Arrant nonsense....First of all these students are all graduates now.the only thing holding then back now is clearances...2.the fine they are asking for is illegal cos there is no law or regulation asking students to stay till end of convocation( what of people that couldn't make it)...3...for a stickler of rules like BU,they should know that 1pm is 1pm.people have flights to catch back to their bases and also be in the convoc party they are hosting...4 if there is fine for leaving before end of convoc, then there shld be compensation for making the graduating students over stay beyond 1pm.....this is bad PR for BU...twittering this to Linda ikeji fast.

interesting. I can understand how embarrassing it must be for the V.C and other dignitaries to see students walking out of the hall en masse without a care in the world. However, the school also has to shoulder a large part of the blame. We have a very bad time culture in Nigeria. A program that is supposed to end at 1pm shouldn't have gone farther. For a private school that insists on sticking to rules and regulations they have no excuse. Even if they started late they could have shortened the time of the speeches to make up the time.

When you entered the school, you swore to abide by the rules and regulations. Well they just made another rule that you have to pay before getting your certificate and you have to abide by it. A parent who can afford to send his/ her child to a private uni and pay millions should be bigger than 25k.

you can also go to court, if you don't mind spending the next 12yrs without your certificate; D

You just spoke my mind. Why is the OP crying while typing?
He walked out of the venue, thats rude enough. No matter how long it took, you should maintain discipline by remaining on your seat, according to the program.
Now they demanding 25k is they having their pound of flesh. You did yours, now its their turn. Until you get ur certificate from the school, and disconnect the link they have on u, they still have ur balls in their hands and u should obey their rules.
Moreso it being a private university. If it were a govt institution, u can get away with that walking away stunt. But christian private? u should have known better.

Wipe those tears, many people have worse problems than just 25k. Pay up, get ur certificate, and then walk away.

Thanks for your numerous and diverse opinions,I am really glad to see that some people hate mediocrity as much as I do,I have a few questions for critics to answer:
1. A university is meant to instill a culture of discipline (time discipline inclusive),is it our fault that the school did not keep to the time which they assured as of via the program?

2. In the event that they want to punish those of us that left the program, isn't #25,000 too much an amount? Have we forgotten so quickly how Nigerians fought the #4,000 NYSC Bill (the irony is that they actually provided a service by giving call up numbers in an easier way, whereas BU is not doing any thing like that).

3. What will be done with the money realised from this EXTORTION EXERCISE?

4. Yes, #25,000 may not be hard to pay,but does that mean we should be cheated? We are fighting for our rights (the problem with the average AFRICAN man is that they accept whatever is given to them)

I IMPLORE THAT THE ORIGINAL POST BE SHARED ACROSS MULTIPLE SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS AND BLOGS.MY PEOPLE, LET US STAND FOR WHAT IS TRUE AND RIGHT. THANK YOU

Thank you! Those are very vital and remarkable questions you just asked. Indeed few Nairalanders can answer these intelligent questions.

So type them in a letter, send to the VC of the school, I'm sure he will be very glad to answer u.

Other than that, go and borrow 25k and pay for ur certificate, sharply before they make it 30k.

PS: young man, what they will do with the money is not ur concern at this moment. u just collect ur certificate waka, let them figure that out themselves.

As u r here do u kw hw many of ur colleagues ve paid d 25k n collected their certificate already. Stds of private uni r usually babies n ajibos whose parent won't cry over 25k.
