What happen is unfortunate but it seems is your luck.if some people buy brand new vehicle there will be one or two fault in it .Some people don't even visit mechanics until after a year, your choice might be an accident vehicle that's why you need somebody who knows about vehicle to help you inspect before you buy

The worst part is that I have not even driven my car; haven't even as much as touched the steering wheel of the car; I've been too busy lately, preparing for a professional exam. Only my cousin has been driving it for the past two weeks.

I dont think I'll ever buy a fairly used car again, whether na Naija used, or UK used...if e like, make e be for moon wey dem use am.

Next time, even if na Golf or Picanto my money reach, I'm buying brand new.

Na God go judge all these oyibo people wey go buy brand new car, come use am for several years, then send am come Africa.

I can't see any sense in your post, it seems to me that you are a novice when it comes to cars. All what you mentioned are normal things to be done in a car except may be the fan. Imagine allignment and wheel balancing na wah! Even in brand new cars after some time you have to do your allignment and wheel balancing. That is not to rule out the fact that buying a brand new car remains the best.

Spending some cool millions to buy a tokunbo car is madness........unless somebody you knew that just bought a particular car and decided to sell it due to problems and you're well aware of the history of the car

If you've been disappointed and dissatisfied by a tokunbo car you'll understand me.


I'd rather buy and drive a Kia picanto car than spend money to drive a fairly used range rover sport.

See, everyone knows that buying a brand new car is always better but if you consider the price difference, buying a tokunbo car may be very well worth it. I know people who also bought brand new cars and had issues in less than 2 years just as I know people who bought tokunbo and used it for 4 years without issues. When you're buying a tokunbo car, buy one in very good condition and with low mileage and have it at the back of your Mind that you may have to replace one or two things usually battery, tyres, and a few other things.

anytime you decide to buy a tokunbo car,always make a budget for the engine replacement. They are sold to you without a guarantee and are very problematic.

My first car was a Benz 200 that i personally went to Cotonou to pick. I drove it till i gave it out after like 5 years and that was when i did some work on the engine. I bought a Toks Montero American Spec off Berger Cement car sales area, that vehicle is still in my house very useful after more than 5 years of massive usage including inter state movements. The only reason i now use mint vehicles is because the company buys them for me as status vehicles. There is no way in hell i will use 18m to buy a 2013 pajero that was given to me in my former employment or use 8m to buy a ford edge as is the case in my recent job. Good Tokunbo cars still exist. If you do not know what to look out for, take along an experienced mechanic. I spent time acquiring that knowledge and by the time i went to buy, i was asking more meaningful questions and checking out stuff mire than my mechanic. Toks remains a good alternative to the common man. Indeed i have been eyeing this camry as a small car i can buy and be using occasionally.

most nigerian car dealers are a dishonest lot who will refurbish salvage cars and sell as lightly used

there was a case in my office where an oga bought an official car - benz suv brand new. the car started having issues within a week of purchase

a vin check showed the car was a flood damaged car sold as brand new

thats the real issue, the frightening greed of our car dealers

As a beginner, don't go for a Honda Accord (End of discussion and the discussion continues), or even Evil Spirit.

You should have gone for Toyota Corolla, Camry (1999 - 2002), Volkzwagen Vento or Sienna.

Honda cars usually have transmission issues, so if you haven't changed the transmission, be prepared to do so: 90k - 120k.

Nissan (except Xtera) and Honda accord aren't good for a beginner.

The best car for a beginner is toyota. Don't go for Benz or BMW if u are beginner, whether mint or tokunbo.

Before u buy any car, seek for professional advice from xprenced people or search online for the car review.

Lexus RS300 - RS350 usually have transmission issues; whether u buy it mint or tokunbo, its the same.

Some tokunbo cars from USA aren't far from mint because America has excellent insurance system, so your problem isn't about tokunbo but wrong choice.

OP.......is it really the car that is burning a hole in your wallet?...or is it your brother? You have never driven the car....your brother is the one doing all the driving...and the telling of the problems. You seem to believe without question what you are told....believe what the dealer told you...believe what your brother tells you. I think this is a case of booksmart vs streetsmart.

The important thing is to buy clean cars with sound engine. If you don't know how to go about this...you can take a mechanic to help you and test the car.

Even Oyibo people buy used cars so don't think its for common people alone in Nigeria. Just learn how to pick the right one and maintain it well.

Bros park well. I bought a benz second hand and it is 10 years now still firing and moving well. New cars have factory faults. If you like buy a brand new car, you will still spend money on it as maintenance so you must understand that buying a car is not an investment. Change your orientation towards cars. One other advice, I think you should have bought a smaller car first for experience before you going for a bigger car. Thanks
