Don't know much about cars but mine is tokumbo EOD too, hubby bought it at auction in us with a defective engine which he was aware of, he replaced with 2005 engine before shipping it down here. it's almost a year since I have been using it and the only problem I have had is key starter which the mechanic said I spoilt cos I be amateur lol. Apart from that the wheel balancing and alignment that was done immediately it was brought it, have not had any cause to change anything. And it has travelled from Lagos to several states in the east without any issues .

So I decided to buy a car...finally!!! (did somebody say congratulations? Thank you)

I'd been saving towards that end, ever since I moved to Lagos started working, and experienced the horrible conditions of Lagos public transport system.

I couldn't decide whether to go for a 'small' brand new car, or a 'bigger', fairly used (Tokunbo) car. Based on popular advice, I opted for a 'clean' (at least it looked clean to me) Tokunbo Honda Accord "Discussion Continues" from Nigeria Ports Authority (Tin Can Island), Apapa.

However, I've spent a whole lot more than I bargained in fixing one stupid thing or the other in the car; from buying a new battery to replacing one of the fans, filter, wheel balancing & alignment, etc.

The worst part is that I have not even driven my car; haven't even as much as touched the steering wheel of the car; I've been too busy lately, preparing for a professional exam. Only my cousin has been driving it for the past two weeks.

I dont think I'll ever buy a fairly used car again, whether na Naija used, or UK used...if e like, make e be for moon wey dem use am.

Next time, even if na Golf or Picanto my money reach, I'm buying brand new.

Na God go judge all these oyibo people wey go buy brand new car, come use am for several years, then send am come Africa.

Shey we dey forbid brand new cars for Naija?

NA UR LUCK

If a brand new car and a tokunbo goes for same amount
Which would you honestly go for?

Bros park well. I bought a benz second hand and it is 10 years now still firing and moving well. New cars have factory faults. If you like buy a brand new car, you will still spend money on it as maintenance so you must understand that buying a car is not an investment. Change your orientation towards cars. One other advice, I think you should have bought a smaller car first for experience before you going for a bigger car. Thanks

Lady i just want sympathise with you a little.

Buying a car is like buying a computer , you must know what you are looking for as well as the purpose.

Nigerians SCREWED YOU UP big time not OYINBO, nothing is wrong with used cars if you know what you are looking for.

Can i just use this opportunity to give a little tips , Mileage, and rustiness in a car is what people have a to look out for but again Nigerians are not trust worthy, they buy High mileage cars wich means there will be a lot of wear and tear on such cars no matter how recent the cars is but they will CLOCK it back to deceive innocent people.

We are the Autor of our own misfortune, Nigerians could have bought things directly from a dealer as well shipping it without no problem but our Criminal way of life have deprived us so many things you and i could have done ONLINE without no worries, you can't even buy things from some ebay seller....all you'll hear or see is no shipping to Africa , specifically Nigeria....Sadddddd

Sorry my dear Nigerians are to be blame as well as yourself in this situation , so count Oyinbo out of this situation.[/b]

Which of the filters did u change. Battery may have gone depending on the last time it was replced. Fan is electrical and could go bad anytime on a 7 year old car. I am not saying tokunbo is better than new but those items you mentioned are not abnormal.
Btw, what assurance do u have that the car is not a Niger used.'reparkaged'
Tokumbo is better than those things called new in Nigeria

Spending some cool millions to buy a tokunbo car is madness........unless somebody you knew that just bought a particular car and decided to sell it due to problems and you're well aware of the history of the car

If you've been disappointed and dissatisfied by a tokunbo car you'll understand me.

I'd rather buy and drive a Kia picanto car than spend money to drive a fairly used range rover sport.
howmany Air bags has that Kia got?how confffy is it,that car is rubbish trust me.

HOW MUCH IS THE LEAST EXPENSIVE NEW CAR?
This is one of the the questions I expect to find answer to on this thread.
Someone should please tell us the price range of new cars and where to go. I believe we are here to learn from one another.
E.g. can 1.2m buy a new small car?
Never.

Used vehicles are sold, bought and re-used all over the world. The major problems with most Nigerian buyers of used vehicles are

1. We buy a vehicle that we know nothing about his past record of usage and maintenance from previous owner/s.
2. We do not carry out proper technical inspection of the vehicles before purchasing
3. Using the vehicle, we expect this vehicle to still perform perform like a new vehicle bought from a dealer with a waranty
