It would be recalled that on November 12, the Federal Government has unveiledthe new design for the N100 commemorative centenary banknote. The‘first digital banknote in the world’ will be officially issued on December 19.

Mr. Jari, in his opinion piece entitled“Controversial changes on the centenary N100 note”, critically reviews a specific but subtle change introduced to the design.

“The Arabic writing in Hausa language (the Ajami script) that read“Naira Dari” ['a hundred naira']on the N100 note has been removed,”Mr. Jari observes.“Just like the N200, and above, the former N100 note used to have the Arabic-Hausa Writing in the left lower part of the note.

“In 2009, when the paper naira notes of lower denominations were replaced by polymer ones, the Ajami Hausa-Arabic writing was removed for no reason. This development was controversial and ill-termed.

“Some argue that the Ajami writing was a symbol of religion of Islam, and, since Nigeria is a secular country, there is no need to show any religious paraphernalia on its currency. But if that is the case, why do we have writings in English? Why is it that there are inscriptions in other languages, like Yoruba and Igbo on the currency? Is it that Nigeria belongs to them?

“The Ajami writing was purposely meant to enable Hausa and other tribes that had learnt Arabic long before English to read the currency. As English came to Nigeria through the South, so Arabic came to Nigeria through the North.

“I want to call on Nigeria government and all its ministries, departments and agencies to make a thorough research before implementing innovations. Government programs are supposed to be useful and accepted by people.”

pulling the nation out of o.i.c is still on the table, it will happen when the northern politicians have killed all their youths for selfish gains.

by then, there will be nobody to cause trouble for them because their own children are always not part of the mayhem team

anyway, what does APC have to say about it

The essence of the currency is for people to use it, if you make it difficult for a good part of the people it is meant for to identify and use it, then you have only proven to be myopic.

I also find it funny that the opponents of the Arabic script are motivated by hate and to a lesser extent fear. Removing the scripts will not change their fear or reduce their hate. I find it amusing as a result.

Regardless of the bigot laden statements so far on the thread, this remains the main reason why Ajami was used on the naira note, CAN is really working though, through ignorance,it is raising the next generation of lord resistance army fighters, who rather than demand good governance would prefer finding new fronts to fight Muslims. Any nation where people put bigotry and fanaticism before tolerance is doomed to be stagnated.

I respectfully disagree with you sir.

Arabic is not our language so is English but our official language is English. Just like Niger, their official language is French.

Now how many people can read Arabic ? Lets be honest with ourselves, the only Arabic likes of us can recognise are the ones written in the Quran not taking it to the extent of writing it on our money.

In Nigeria, we need to take different groups along, the Christians are not comfortable with the Arabic inscription on the Note. Why not just remove it and write in Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo and English. This why we can convert more Christians to Muslims just as Prophet Mohammed said (S.A.W)

Myopic people indeed, well stated, what is wrong accommodating other people? How has removing this change your life? Jonathan is playing politics with myopic Christians who would feel they have won some sort of victory, while him and his cronies continue ruing the economy implicitly or explicitly. When people think illiterates are the only one manipulable by religion we fail to the see the fact that myopic literates fare no better!

I know that English is our national language.
Some state governments have also adopted indigenous languages as official languages in their states.
However, i am not sure any state has adopted Arabic as an official language.
If none of the federating states/ethnic groups has adopted Arabic as an official language, do you not find it funny that Arabic is adopted, from the backdoor, as an official national language?

What is funny, is your threatening people about the use of Arabic in Nigeria.
What else can you do to the people of Alakio?

How many Nigerians speak read or understand Arabic? Why should it be made easy for only a particular set of the Nigerian populace? If you and your people find it difficult to identify and use the naira because it doesn’t contain Arabic inscriptions then so be it! Rubbish! That’s why you guys are bombing and killing people because presidency left the North.

The next to be removed should be the Arabic inscriptions on our military badges, and rankings....Nigeria is a secular state...period.

This madness has to stop, National assembly is built like a mosque, the presidential villa is built like a mosque....This country belongs to us all and is never a religious state. visit any ministry, parastatal or agency of the government in Abuja. the master plan of those buildings have mosques...They couldn't have the freedom to do that in Lagos, and came up with the script that the capital of Nigeria has to be at the center of Nigeria.

We just need to be security conscious cos in matter of days the news that Hausa/Islamic Inscriptions has been removed will go viral, they will tag all of us HARNI (meaning Unbeliever) and may go on rampage killing themselves not me.

I remember my uncle who was a member of MPR telling me that Soludo had good plans for the Naira but the northern hegemony wont allow him. That his problem with Yaradua began the day he raised it in their meeting that Nigeria is a secular state and so should not have any religious inscription in our currency. He said YARADUA heard of it before that meeting ended. Of course his brothers informed him. Yaradua called Soludo as the meeting was ending to ask how true.

Most people think Soludos tenure was not renewed because of the planned devaluation of the naira which presidency claims they were not carried along. but the inscription on the naira was the genesis of Soludos crisis with Yaradua. OBJs grand plan was that Soludo should remain and complete the devaluatuion plan.

In days to come expect the northern elites reaction to this removal.and may be Bokoharam taking more innocent lives in protest...Nigeria belongs to them and we are their slaves...so an average northerner thinks.

Except for those suffering from historical Amnesia, the 2015 struggle to take power by the north is never born out of the love for Nigeria. The North has not forgiven Southern Nigeria for the death of Yaradua. In their heart, in their mosques, its a subject of discuss that Jonathan is seating on their chance and must be unseated no matter what. Ineeded, Jonathan has disappointed all of us greatly but the North seeking power on the premise that it belongs to them or based on vendetta is a NO NO for me and all intellectual minds.

I dont know how we came up with Quota system, but that stuff has only served in the interest of the north. I dont know any southerner who has benefited from Quota system. We sacrificed merit at the altar of that Northern grand plan. If not tell me why Fashola should not be given APC presidential ticket to have a good election. But try that and see the viper react...It must be them or nothing. They annuled June 12, gave it to Weak Shonekan for few months and chased him out again, killed Abiola in the prison so that , his case will remain in the ash bin of history. Today, my people cry for remeberance of June 12 and they laugh from Minna and Kano.they knew what they were doing... If you are up north during the election, and Jonathan is declared winner, better run for your life. They will unleash the evil dragon, what Bokoharam is doing now is childs play compared to the plan.

bookmark this and quote me on Feb 14th.

So you will agree with me that those people are bilingual.

If so then French should be added to the Note since some of us have members that speak only yoruba and french.

Also Hebrew and Italian

When was arabic declared a national language? Do you know what Ajami is?

Ajami script
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The term Ajami (Arabic: عجمي‎ ʿaǧamī ), or Ajamiyya (Arabic: عجمية‎ ʿaǧamiyyah), which comes from the Arabic root for "foreign" or "stranger," has been applied to Arabic alphabets used for writing African languages, especially those of Hausa and Swahili, although many other African languages were written using the script. It is considered an Arabic derived African writing system. Since African languages involve phonetic sounds and systems different from the Arabic language, there have often been adaptations of the Arabic script to transcribe them—a process not unlike what has been done with the Arabic script in non-Arabic speaking countries of the Middle East, and with the Latin script in Africa or with the Vietnamese alphabet.[1]

The West African Hausa is an example of a language written using Ajami, especially during the pre-colonial period when Qur'anic schools taught Muslim children Arabic, and by extension, Ajami. When Western colonizers adopted a Latin orthography for Hausa, Ajami went into decline, and today is employed less frequently than the Latin standard orthography. However, Hausa Ajami is still in widespread use, especially in Islamic circles.

let me use Ajmi

Like I stated, most of teh bigot laden statements in this thread is derived from Ignorance deliberately being fostered by CAN!

@bolded that is the point! Just because they aren't comfortable with the Arabic inscription doesn't means it should be removed. In the same currency all the other languages are written signifying the worth of the naira e.g Nàírà Méwàà, Naira Iri and Naira Goma. Notice both the Yorubas and Igbos write in Latin alphabet. If the Hausas preferred to write their language in Arabic alphabet why stop them?

When are the "Hausa" states going to write their state laws in Arabic?
