It is with utmost join that I, Timpaker is here with you all to witness this great project called the "Nairaland Poetry Club".

Having been a member of this great site since my day of registration, I must confess that I have learnt a lot from people, especially like-minds in the Literature Section.
I believe that with this platform, more poets from Nairaland would key in to the mission and vision of the club and paint this section with colourful words of poetry that would beautify the hearts of readers.

I wish to use this medium to call out "closet poets" to join this club and post their works and get groomed to be better poets. I also wish to implore those who think poetry is a complicated piece of writing, to open their hearts and appreciate the words we organise in different forms and thoughts as poems/poetry.

On this note, my sincere gratitude goes to OMA4U and his team for their painstaking effort in delivering this infant club from the womb of ideas under the great theatre of Nairaland. I believe this baby club would be fed with sweet poetry as it continue to grow.

Finally, I feel so honoured to be part of this great team, not just as a VIP but as a poet. With this, I say, welcome abode everyone and I pray you enjoy your read here. Thank You. [/b]

It's a pleasure to be here. I'd like to thank all those who have come.

*turns to VIP section*

I'm honored to be in such talented company.

Poetry has been my salvation on many occasions. It has brought me joy when I was in the depths of despair. It has melted my heart when anger is all I thought I would ever feel. Whatever emotion I'm feeling can be either heightened or change completely when I put pen to paper or touch my key pad.

For me Poetry has been a lifesaver, a counselor, a best friend. It has even saved me from saying things I would have regretted or said things for me I couldn't say. I'm grateful that through this club and the poetry section others will be able to access the power that poetry can give...weather by reading it or writing.

Anyone can write. In fact learning to write is one of the prerequisites for being a learned human being in this century. Writing is for everyone.

It takes skill to write a story, to engage in literature. You need to have a good story, you need to know how to express that story in words and you need to know how to compose those words in such a way as to keep your readers hooked on your writing. Writing can be difficult and can require a lot of discipline.

It takes soul to write poetry. Poetry is the emotion, the movement of words to convey that which you feel on to someone else. Poetry is noble. Poetry is like the surgery of medicine, you need to have extra exposure, extra training to engage in it. Then again, some just stumble upon it congenitally. Some individuals have been known to create magnificent verses of genius upon waking up from sleep, verses that tear down and build up, verses whose words drip eternal joy and inspire overwhelming hope.

I was surprised to see that there was a poetry section on Nairaland. I honestly don't know why it is hidden. I actually found this section when someone mentioned my moniker and i was drawn into this wonderful place. Since then I have frequented here often to sample what has been written, seeking the sweet elixir of words that would feed my soul and make me dance with mental joy as i pondered on the verses and rhymes. There are a lot of great poets in here and I salute you all. I see this place becoming more frequented by other talented writers and curious readers. Poetry section is about to ascend!

The competition was wonderful and i enjoyed myself immensely. Special thanks go out to the organizers and judges, OMA4U, noble4d, larrysun, laykorn, princesa, timpaker; you guys are doing great. More ink to your pens.
To my fellow competitors, i enjoyed reading your poems, they were all fantastic!
to krystalxxx, thanks for being a wonderful partner, your inspiration and ideas are what carried us on to take the lead. congratulations once again.

firestar, have read some of your poems from your diary. you'll beat me handsdown anyday.

i also want to thank the readers. Like good literature, poetry cannot exist of itself if it is not read. You guys should just sit back, relax and enjoy because i am sure our in house poets in this section are going to give you a literary feast you will not easily forget!

And here come coogar and JigsawKillah.....Coogar is regarded as one of the most influential personalities from the Rap section. Since many of the poets here consider rap to be poetry,Coogar has been listed as one the VIPs,in fact VVIP. Lol. Coogar,we await your words.

Thanks so much Royver. Texanomaly,you're awesome Ma. Iyabodeh,thanks for sharing that. When I was a kid,Maya Angelou was one of those poets I first came across. I used to browse online for her quotes until I fell for her poems too. Today,I believe that Maya's Phenomenal Woman is one of the best poems ever written. D9ty7 we await your words.

I'd like to share this: poetry is not something I have ever imagined myself going into until a gfew years back. I started using words to describe my feelings. I discovered that sometimes the longest sentences doesn't always express what's in our hearts. Poetry became an avenue to express myself when I have a story to tell and no plot. grin

It's so filling to know that words carefully grouped together can speak in the loudest of volumes. It carries its weight across lands into $any hearts causing unity between two souls that are not even related. Poetry is a way of life that can used to teach lessons and to lead.

I once listened to Maya Angelou one day on the television. I watched as she spoke her written words with such passion. I sw her emotions become life from her mouth and I wanted it. So, permit me to share this inspired poem I wrote a few minutes ago with you. She inspired it actually. grin here goes


"I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel."
.......Angelou Maya (A Famous Pulitzer Prize winner and a female poet)

His mind, blank as the face of a child.
Thoughts whether wielding? no idea.
Flashes of me and him I see.
How I struggle to help sow his seed.

A champions he is,
Head high in his bliss.
Does he remember it's me?
How I fought...
I caught...
I sought...
And coerced.
So I can fulfill my conscience with him.

I see his blank travel slowly,
Looking but not seeing.
I think I hear him whisper.
"Which of them are you, oh pal?"
Eyes meet, falters and then...
A nod, a smile and a memory of when,
All clear in the eyes of the child
of thirteen years ago, oh my!
He does remember, then a happy sigh!

Do people remember?
The days of standing firm in trial.
Being loyal till your strength retire.
And all needed are acquired.

Is there ever a memory?

I never knew I'll be giving a speech at a great event like this. But a speaker/writer must not be caught unawares at public functions. Which is why I am delivering this very short speech.

Just like the event anchor said, my name is d9ty7. All protocols duely observed.
I am awed by the level of seriousness being put into this E-event. Poetry represent one thing, emotion.
When I first saw a the invitation for this event, I was like "lets go there and learn." And believe me, I want to learn all that is to be learnt in poetry.
I have nothing much to say, just want to wish Mr OMA4U, a nice tenure in office, as well as his executive members. I hereby announce myself as the first student willing to learn from this innovative.
I am sure you guys will be willing to help me know more about peotry, Iyabodeh, Timpaker, Princesa, Royver, Jigsawkillah, Texanomaly, the president himself and other great poets.
*Bows once again to the crowd and salute the VIPs.
Nothing stops us from having our own moderator on the peoms for Review section. And with one voice, we'll call for it so we can be represented on the frontpage like every other sections. Let one thing be our watchword, UNITY.
I wish us a wonderful end of the year in advance. Thank you for the opportunity given to an unknown Nairalander like me to speak before this large audience and these word class poets and poetess seated.
