This news is so amusing. We purchased satellite from Chinese and the satellite disappeared on the orbit. The satellite was replaced (NigComsat1R) which is not functional and now our government is telling us that they are going to lunch a satellite in the orbit whereby they cannot manage the one we purchased from abroad... haba this is so amusing.

With due respect, you don't have a clue to what you're taking about... We have almost zero gravity in space, so how possible that a big object like satellite will just disappear... There was a problem with the solar array panels of the east and west panels... As a result the satellite had to be de-orbited, that is moved to space junk yard... Bcoz there was comprehensive insurance in place, Nigcomsat1R was built without the Nigerian govt. paying a dime... I know this bcoz I work there, and its very annoying when people post what they're clueless about...

The first man reached the moon people were dying and starving in Russia?

Do you know that when you want to call someone in Africa from Nigeria and other African countries, your call goes first to Europe or the USA before reaching the so called person? Africans or Nigeria owning ,building etc her own satellites will reduce the cost of telecommunications.
Furthermore tho I sympathize with our brothers dying in the north, we shouldn't stop our activities ...or maybe salaries too shouldn't b payed because people are dying in the north?

Home made satellite dat wud be launch in Russia or China, abi na India satellite lauching station thex want to use? We hv no facility for such tech, the minister should stop deceiving himself...

No country is self - sufficient in space technology. Even US satellites are still launched in RUSSIA. Many reasons give rise to this, like the targeted orbit, constellation and satellite mission. Most subsystems in any satellite can be built by private companies outside the originating govt. Nigeria can build a satellite in Nigeria and launch it in China, it does not matter. However, I know Nigeria is developing in launch site clos to Lagos. You don't have to know everything for security reasons. Launch sites are usually located near the ocean so the while the rockets are navigating the airspace some parts of the rocket could fall into the ocean and not places where people live.
People like you should stop being pessimistic. You must not comment on everything you read on the social media cos you might end up exposing your ignorance.

So we will be building satellites in Nigeria with imported materials because we don't produce metal and any of the things associated with it.

And oh, we still don't have light.

Hehehehe...

Apparently someone told this govt that we need jobs, we're going broke and we have to advance technologically forwars. So rather than sit down and plan longterm to create a strong diversified manufacturing base and stable numerous jobs, sit down to plan and aggressively implement a National Power overhaul, they're IMPORTING more stuff to give some hands to keep busy.

And patting themselves on the back.

Yep.

People were starving in several countries while technology was being advanced. But do we know what that satellite is for, is it for telecomms? And even if we reduce our telecomms cost (not a bad idea), how much impact does that make on an average business who is spending millions to power its gen set? Which is of more vital need, a stronger telecomms system or a working power grid?

No-one truly thinks this is a bad idea, but you cannot compare where Russia was to where we are now. Let's focus on the urgent no.1 on our to-do list rather than no.6

Russia was worse off than nigeria when they sent the first man on the moon

Besides the point is we can't not wait for everyone to have his stomach full before making technological strives. It didn't happen anywhere why do you think it can happen in Nigeria?

Okay even if it is not a telecom satellite, it can still b used to monitor the large northern territory/region, anything that makes us less dependent on oyibo should always be welcomed, do you like it when Nigeria begs for satellite images? Or when we can't prevent floods and other climatic changes? Me I don't like .

@ topic. The minds of most Africans have been so infantilized that we have people who think that there will b a moment where corruption won't exist anymore, poverty wont exist anymore ...we find ourselves with Africans who believe that before manufacturing our own vaccines everyone must eat first, everyone must have a car blah blah

Please you guys should point to me the country where such happened or is happening

Well if we already had one in place, it would have made it a lot easier for our intelligence agencies to gather info on boko haram.

We would've been able to monitor their convoy to were their camps are.

So I def. support this initiative if it can be implemented correctly.

Consider this...
China has probably the largest homeless population, yet no one is telling them to stop manufacturing weapons or sending satellite and people in the space and build shelter first

India has probably the highest number of beggars in the world yet no one is asking them to feed their people and destroy their nuclear weapons
What I'm driving at is even if Nigeria reaches that super wealth , how do you protect it ?(your human and mineral resources) ? How do you protect your integrity without technology? Or do you even start talking about being independent?

I didn't feel the need to mention the fact that people are homeless and starving in the USA too yet their defence budget/expenditures keep increasing while they are blasting their presido for offering cheaper healthcare ....think about it

“The African economy, I believe in the last couple of years, has shown a remarkable sign of growth; but this growth is unfortunately more of community drive, not of the manufacturing sector.
“For this growth to be sustained and for it to be transformed into a real national transformation agenda for the development of the nation it must be productivity-based; productivity aspect must come in.
“And the only way you can do that is to develop your time and technology, to apply science and technology in your economy.
“Such that the economy, while growing, the productivity of the manufacturer will have played a key role. This is what is happening in developed societies”.
I must say I agree 100% with this. This is a good analysis of the situation and the most important aspects.

Real growth must be productive-based to solidify Nigerian and African economies and promote self-dependency. The productivity of manufacturer will play a key role.

The major aspects are 1) Education 2) R&grin - Research and Development (private, public, university, government agency, military) 3)Financing and protecting local enterprises (startups, forming consortiums, import duty tariffs, foreign ownership restrictions, etc)

In country such as South Korea, which were a low-income agricultural country in the 60s, a lot of emphasis has been put in the creation of research centers. Read about it here :https://web.archive.org/web/20121013035959/http://www.duke.edu/~myhan/kaf0401.html

For those who have the capacity (money, finance, knowledge) to start enterprises, it's very easy to get into the manufacturing sectors as many companies around the world make their profit by selling us manufacturing equipments. Some also sells us equipments designed by us.

For example (quickly goggled):

Tomato sauce manufacturing equipments:

He said the ministry had excelled in the production of made -in-Nigeria tricycles, curtailing of trypanosomiasis, design and fabrication of interlocking blocks and launching of road safety guidelines among others.
Mr. Bulama added that the effort to partner international bodies to complete the science and technology park at SHESTCO was on-going.

Nice development.

Good. Nigeria push ahead, don't listen to those who talk of priorities and white elephants, ten years down the line, when another African Nation gets it into their heads that just because they are Africans they don't have to be stupid, and then they go and work on Satellites or rockets for space, those same "Nigerians" will turn around and lament -Oh, look at Uganda sending rockets to space, oh why was i born in this god-forsaken Nigeria- whoa is me, whoa is me'

Beside all of that the future is in space - Weather monitoring, Criminal and terrorists monitoring, Border watch, resources location monitoring, Telecommunications, Spying and miscellaneous Military applications and reliance etc . Then further uses as we become more advanced and not left too far behind, space tourism, mineral resources, planetary colonization- the survival of the Nigeria gene-pool and so-and-so-forth
