Ibaka deep sea port relocated to new site By Godfrey Bivbere & Olaitan Ayoola THE proposed Ibaka deep sea port, Akwa Ibom, has been relocated to Ibeno Local Government Area, while the name has been changed to Ibom from Ibaka. Vanguard gathered that the project analysis done by a foreign consultant and Transaction Advisers, FELAC Concept and Marine and Transport Business Solutions, MTBS, of Netherlands, showed that the port project would not be commercially viable if sited at Ibaka due to its long distance from the sea.. A source close to the Ministerial Steering and Delivery Committee for the port who spoke to Vanguard, explained that the project had to be moved initially to Okposo. The source further noted that the same problem of distance from the sea as well as the dense population, made it non-viable. The source said that the soil analysis on Okposo showed that the earth there is marshy which would further drive up the cost of construction should it be sited there. The source pointed out that the project had to be moved again to the third site at Ibeno Local Government Area and the name had to be changed from Ibaka to Ibom, like all other projects of the state to give it a state colouration. The distance from the new site to the sea is about 20 nautical kilometres and also it is closer to the connecting expressway for quick evacuation of consignments from the port at completion, the source disclosed. The source also said that the area is less populated, making compensation for displaced persons easy, as well as making the new site for the project commercially viable. The transport ministry source said that one of the major challenges faced by the committee at the new site was the presence of under-ground oil pipelines. The source explained that the Committee held several meetings with the Department of Petroleum Resources, DPR, National Petroleum Investment Management Services, NAPIMS, and the various oil companies on how to work around the pipelines. The oil companies agreed to relocate some of the pipelines that were no longer active away from the area to aid quick construction of the port. The source explained that construction work on the project is expected to commence sometime next year on a Public, Private Partnership. It added that a few little details left on the part of government would soon be taken care of for construction work to commence. On financing, the source disclosed that the private sector is expected to have 60 percent while the Federal and state governments are expected to hold 20 percent each. According to the source, “No government can fund a port project but it can only be achieved through a Public/Private sector partnership.” Foreign concerns are already making inquires on what is required to partake in the financing of the project. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/12/ibaka-deep-sea-port-relocated-new-site/ 6 Likes |

It is a wonderful project to be sited in Ijawland, although we didn't complaint when it was sited in our neighbour's enclave, nor did we agitate for it to be brought to our soil |

Perfect move. Mobil Nigeria is already operating at Ibeno and most infrastructures in place. The access road to Uyo is in perfect condition. All FG needs is just the port and every other thing will fall into place. 8 Likes |

Collynzo9: I was with an Ibeno man and Ijaw man right there in Uyo and this topic came up. Ibeno is different from Ijaw but are related to Andoni in Rivers and some Igbo/Akwa Ibom tribes. They trace their origin to Cameroun. 1 Like |

Abagworo:all the ijos do is claim clans whose origins are yet to be known. they did that with the ogoni ,now its clear that ogonis are more related to mmoños than ijos. among ijos, there are 5 main groupings 1]yorobiod Ijos 2]Edoid Ijos 3]Ijoid Ijos 4]Igboid Ijos 5]Ibibioid Ijos I've always asked myself what happens when Nigeria breaks up and mother states of those groupings decide to come for their own for now, ibaka belongs to AKS 1 Like |

After years of planning, they eventually announced that the location had been moved to Ibeno. Thought the Governor said it was going to be commissioned next year? Thank God Jonah is the President, otherwise they would have blamed the Yoruba as usual. I wish them well. We need to decongest Lagos sea ports. It is well. 15 Likes |

If this happens, it is good news.... The road from Eket to Ibeno is under construction, the east west road passed through Eket. This will improve living in Aks, SE and the south south in general Many job opportunities will be created. 3 Likes |

ChimaAdeoye: Chill ..... they call this government clueless yet its the smartest I've seen. If you want your port functional and effective, you need infrastructures in place to handle the population migration that comes with it. Akpabio has succeded in laying the groundwork infrastructure that Akwaibom needs. Uyo is currently set up to be a home for most Nigerians that will be relocating there in the coming years. It currently positions as an alternative to Lagos. All it needs is to have the port come onboard and watch the massive migration from Lagos following the relocation of so many service companies and businesses down south. In the coming years..... watch the dynamics of Nigeria. North will be busy with agriculture, SS will be self sufficient in Oil and commerce, SW through lagos maintains its commerce and economy. SE will be the link between all these through businesses 4 Likes |
