--CHAPTER TWO--
Ekpa had reached home long ago, but didnt see his father. He wondered what will keep his father so long even though he took the shortcut route.


"why is your father taking so long?" Ekaette asked.


She is a short plumb woman who got married to okon at a young age. She has two children, ekpa being her first child.


"mama i dont know, he has never been this late" ekpa said lowering his self on the slab beside the mud house.

"mmmmm lets go and take our dinner he will come home" she said and walked into the house.


Ekpa sat on the slab, reminscing about the wonderful time he had with his love. She was fun to be with.


He started having this feeling that something bad must have happen to his father. He shrugged of the thoughts.


"well! He will come home soon, isentim our great god will protect him. Ooohhh he was having a meeting with the king" he recalled as he stood up and went into the house.

--AT THE KING'S PALACE--
The king had fixed a meeting with his elders, he wanted to analyse and come out with solutions to the problem facing the village.


Their only source of drinking water had been polluted by the neighbouring village.



All the clan heads were assembled, but one head wasnt in attendance, he was okon, the clan head of iboku. What keeping him?

He had never missed a meeting before and he was the person that suggested the gathering. Chief ekong kept wondering.
"good evening all" chief ekong greeted.


"evening to you our lord" they leader greeted in unison.


"i will not be able to kick start this meeting without the presence of okon, we all know that he was the one that suggested we have this meeting" chief ekong said.


The six leaders all nodded. Ete edet raised hand and was acknowleged to have his say.


"we dont know what keeping him, maybe he is fighting with his wife, we all know that his......" he was interrupted mid way in his statement. Ete ikuod stood up to defend his friend, he always wonder what the problem between ete okon and ete edet, why were they always at logger heads.
"ehhhhh ete ku ka do, mmm mmm dont go there leave his family live out of..... "


"and i wasnt talking to you, were you the one i was refering to?" ete edet uttered, his voice raised.


"say what you have to say and live my friend out of...."
"your friend? When you are sleeping with ete ubon's.... Dont let me disgrace you here o" ete edet said bouncing on one leg.


"what going on here? Did i call you to come throw words at each other? Ete edet will you kindly complete your sentence?" chief ekong said.


"abomination" What! What did he just say? How come he knows he have been having sleeping with okon's wife? Ete ikuod thought as he withdrew into his shell. He sat down and lowered his head. He knew he had been uncovered.Ete ubong, the head clan of ituk angrily stood up, shock, surprise and anger clearly written on his face.


Ete ubong was shocked of what he just heared, who was ete ikuod sleeping with in his family? Was it his wife or daughters? He had three daughters, they were triplets.

But they werent ripe for marriage. Had ete ikuod been sleeping with them at his back? Or was it his wife? The question kept running through his mind as he calmly approached ete ikuod.


All eyes were on they trio, every one was surprised. Ete ikuod had been having extra marital affairs? That was a sure sin, punishable by death only if the gods says so.


"you slept with who?" ete ubong asked while holding onto ikuod's lion hem.


"tell me you slept with who? My wife or my precious daughters? Tell me who" ubong barked on. Spittles were plastered on ikuod face.


Ikuod knew the accusation leveled on him was true so he couldnt defend himself from ubong's attack. Even if he did, edet may got annoyed and uncover the secret, by saying who he slept with. It better the case remains like that. But the act had been done since, why was edet now bringing it up now?


"cant you speak? How many times did you ....." ubong barked on. He threw a slap at ikuod face but it wasnt delivered. Someone held his hand. Every one had stood up and tried to stop the fight. Only the chief remained on his throne, his fingers tapping quickly on his laps. He does that when he gets angry.


The guards outside had rushed in on hearing the commotion in the palace.


The king was infuriated by the drama and ordered every one to settle down.


"you will see what ill do to you, i swear it me and you from now on. It either you kill me or i kill you" ubong kept ranting as he led to his seat.


When all was silent, the king spoke, it was obvious he was angry, his voice and manner of speech expressed that.


"i thoughts i had well mannered people to aid me and advice on the affairs of this village, i didnt know i had i had..... Do you know i can order the guards to kill you all" he sparked. All they elders went on their knees and postrated, begging and pleading with their king to have compassion and forgive them.

They all knew their king, he usually give the punishement to all, even if you didnt participate in the offence. And this wasnt the first time he had said that. He had said that a year ago and all they cheifs were hanged. He could do it again, No one want to die.


"my orders are, ubong you are hereby suspended from the affairs of the village, edet, you are suspended till further notice" he barked.


" ikuod, and edet you two will appear before the council tomorrow morning, now all of you should get out of my sight".


All the elders immediately stood up and dashed forward to the large door. Outside, they collected their matchet tourch from the guards and went their respective directions, they didnt say a word to each other, they had their problems to bear.

On his way home, Ikuod kept pondering how edet knew about the intercourse, it was true, nothing was hidden under the sun.



He was afraid of death and he knew that what will be meted to him, he felt like running away, but to where? They gods will be watching him. He can run but can he hide?.

He felt like killing himself as the shame will be too much for him to bear. The truth will certainly be out by tomorow. Who will his family take him to be?


It wasnt his fault, he was seduced. He decided to face what ever punishement given to him. Ubong said he will deal with me but how?


Who knows, the gods might not kill him, he might be sent on exile. He'd prefer that than the former.
It was dark and some of the villagers might have slept by now. He heared a shrill sound from the bush which sent cold shiver down his spine. He quickened his pace. What ever made that sound was evil he said.


He walked faster, his mind full of thoughts. What was that sound? It sounded like a baby was crying. He flashed his tourch at the direction which the sound came.

He had the urge to go check what or who was that but decided against it.
The shrill sound came again, louder and more closer than before. He was filled up with fear.

He sprinted a race and ran like never before. He hadnt ran for 5years now, what will make an elder run? But the way and speed he ran, not even the current fastest runner un the village could overtook him. He ran, his heart in his mouth.


The road he was using was the long route to his compound, he decided taking the shorter route.
He ran forward and branched left, using the road that pass through the evil forest. Immediately he stepped a foot on the road, he felt death around him, he smelt blood and fear.


He increased his speed and ran like a mad dog, breathing heavily. Ikuod heared laughter erupting from his back, the voice sounded croaky and deep.


He felt his spirit leaving his body. He ran forward, pointing the tourch light on the path. A rumbled sound came followed by that shrill sound, the sound was clear, it sounded like a baby crying.


His spirit was tensed up with fear. Something caught his attention, it layed in the middle of the road. As he got nearer, the image got clearer. It was a human being that lay across the road. He or she was lifeless. His instict said he knew the dead person. The laughter and weird sound had ceased, his fears were hightened. Ikuod ran more more closer and took a look at the body, it was a man.


He layed on the ground, his back facing the sky.
He stopped on his tracks, his fears immedietely left him when he saw that the body had a resemblance with his friend, okon. To comfirm, he rolled over the dead body, what he saw made him scream.


Abasi oo! He screamed aloud, his voice echoed through the silent night.


There lay his beloved childhood friend, his eyes were gorged out and stuffed in with dry leaves. His chest, signs which he couldnt understand were written in blood.

what does it means? He couldnt understand, his fears had left him, he felt he could kill who so ever killed his friend.


"You can kill me? Hohohohohohohoh" a voice said from his back. He immediately sprinted up, remembering were he was.


Jumping over the lifeless body, he began his race again. He saw a creature sitted on the middle of the path. He flashed his tourch at it, the creatures head was like of a dog, it as big and large while it body took the form of a human being. He shivered in fear.

He wished he didnt take the shortcut path. He recalled seeing such creature before, yes! In the shrine of ibiakpo, the god of his shrine.


Why was his god chasing him? Did it have anything to do with his offence? No! It only isentim that punishe such offences not the smaller gods.


The light from his torch went off immediately the creature stood up. Ikuod frozed in fear, then he smiled. He grinned and started laughing hesterically, he walked up to the creature and hugged it, then he took a race into the evil forest.


Ete ikuod, the clan head of ibiakpo was mad, he was taken by the gods.

"ima am going to check on my morning traps i fixed this morning, and i will hunt as well" akpan said as he fixed the headlight firmly on his head.


"no o ebe not this night o please for the sake of my unborn child dont go" ima said holding unto his hunter's gun. He had loaded the gun already with gun powder.


Ima held onto the gun, the but of the gun facing her while the nozzle pointed directly at akpan tummy.


Akpan always hate the way his wife usually behave. He wanted to go do some hunting, this wasnt the first ima had tried stopping him from hunting at night, With reasons of being lonely. But today, she had a night mare and woke up screaming out her lungs. He'd asked her what the drean was about, she said, a creature tried killing him at the forest.


The dream scared him. He dosent believe in dreams and superstition, just like his elder brother, okon.


Akpan and ima were newly married couple. She was one month pregnant.


"ima i have to go, another hunter will remove my catch, and you will still be the one to eat the larger share" akpan said struggling the gun with her.


"ebe what of the dream? please dont go" she begged on.


Ima wondered what came on her husband so suddenly, a minute ago he wanted to make love to her and now he want to go hunting, and not just any forest, but the atakpa forest.


"okay woman, leave the gun i wont go" he said sitting on the bambo bed.


Ima look into his eye stared into them, probabbly searching for lies. It seemed she found lies and with one pull, dragged the gun out of his hand. Her finger mistakenly pulled the triger as she dragged the gun to her self.


"pooooarrrr" the gun went off followed with a shrill cry from the bush afar.
"aaaaaarggg" akpan exclaimed in shock as the bullet narrowly missed him

The cock crew as it was morning, people had already prepared their basket and crops to be planted at their various farm lands.


Ekaette couldnt sleep, her beloved husband didnt come home last night. That alone can make her go insane. Where could he be?


She washed her face with water from the earthen pot and went into the hut to warm food. They couldnt eat last night. They have never eaten their dinner without the presence of their bread winner.


She was about to enter the hut when she heard a scream, it came from her son's room, she raced like a mother hen to her son's hut.

What happened and why will her son scream that loud?
