President Mahinda Rajapaksa Lost In A Surprised Presidential Election by Eziachi: 9:34am On Jan 09, 2015
Sri Lanka's president, Mahinda Rajapaksa has been defeated in the presidential election.
Official results showed Maithripala Sirisena, a former ally of the incumbent, had won 51.3% of the vote.
Mr Rajapaksa, in office since 2005, said on Twitter he looked forward to a peaceful transition of power.
He based his campaign on the theme: the devil you know is better than the Angel you do not know.

Mr Sirisena who was the president' health minister had already received promises of support from Tamil and Muslim leaders before the election.
But the result shows he also picked up a significant portion of the majority Sinhalese vote, most of whom solidly supported Mr Rajapaksa in previous elections.
Less than two months ago before this election was called by the president, this result was unimaginable.
The winner defected to the opposition only two months ago and united all the fractured opposition behind him who cannot individually come any close in defeating the ruling party and the president.

Both men were allies until November when Mr Sirisena, the former health minister in Mr Rajapaksa's government, announced his surprise candidacy.

In any election each candidate has a 50% chance of winning or losing...2014 elections can swing either way...

APC strategising, PDP strategizing...One thing though PDP learn should from this piece of news...

They shouldn't rely too much on the power of the sitting president, a shocker might be coming their way...

Who says the People's General won't oust the clueless one out of Office come FEBuhari?! They should keep encouraging themselves wrongly. It happened in Tunisia, it just happened in Sri Lanka, and it would repeat itself in Nigeria come next month!

It also happened in Malawi. Former President Joyce Banda was the incumbent president of Malawi when she lost the election last year

The quote below is directly redolent of what is going on in Nigeria with GEJ ans his fans focusing entirely on vilifying the opposition and dubiously presenting themselves as the "devil you know". Sadly you cannot convince an electorate that is already in hell to bear with their tormentor because others are "unknown". Such an electorate, 10 times out of ten and under free and fair elections, will opt for change and embrace the "unknown" when current suffering is already unbearable and as bad as possible. In other words, people who have nothing to lose will not fear change.

It is the Nigerians with luxury homes, goods and cars who sleep with heavy security and behind high walls. Very poor Nigerians who have sunk as low as possible, own nothing of value and live from hand to mouth sleep soundly under bridges with no fear of robbery. Using the North to illustrate my point, many do not even want to hear the name GEJ in that region. What could be worse than what obtains in that region and how can you frighten the people of the North to retain "the devil you know" when preventable deaths and unchecked terrorism has turned the region into a war zone courtesy of the "devil you know"? Who will vote for a retention of that?

He based his campaign on the theme: the devil you know is better than the Angel you do not know.

Continue to fool yourself. It is mainly some clannish folks from the SE and SS who blind themselves to the obvious to then continue supporting the ultra-failed and nauseatingly corrupt GEJ because of ethno-religious prejudice against others. All detribalised and religiously tolerant Nigerians, along with those not sharing ethnicity with GEJ, will not vote for a continuation of deaths, massive corruption, comatose power supply, insecurity, worsening terrorism, unemployment, ten airplanes for one president, N1 billion food for the presidency, higher institution strikes etc, etc, etc. GEJ is gone if free and fair election ensures that "majority carries the vote" FeBuhari is for Buhari.

Goodluck Jonathan,take note!

What is the antecedents of the man who won and that of the tyrant contesting against GEJ, mind you ,

1, the incumbent has been in power for 9 years and was already not bringing anything new to the table, he does not have major achievements to his name

2, the winner of the election has no intention to foist his religion on the entire nation, at least no such promise was read

3, the winner was one of the back bone of the mahindas administration

4, the winner has not made claims to things he didn't do and got busted

5, the winner has a certificate cheesy grin grin grin cheesy

Telling the truth now amounts to "raining insults"? If you are a detribalised and religiously tolerant Nigerian , wherever you come from, then you will not fathom any insult in what I have written so far. On the other hand, it could be your guilty conscience making what I write appear as an insult to you personally.

February will be interesting. But knowing Nigerians, they can explain themselves out, after every event, no matter what their opinion or position were prior.

Remember what happened after both the Osun and Ekiti elections, despite all the chest beating on Nairaland prior, each side has swallowed their injured pride and had moved on.

What people don't know was that the centre right had been ruling Nigeria since independence at centre under civil rule and military.
NPC-NPN-NRC-PDP are the same group of people. When UPN won in 1979, they used some mathematical manipulation and conservative judiciary to hand over power to NPN.
SDP won with Abiola in 1993 they were denied the mandate by centre right persons in the military.
In 1999, they spranged a much conservative OBJ from prison to stop a more socialist inclined Olu Falae.
If Buhari win this election, it might be the first time the centre left socialist has ever ruled Nigeria.

In during the junta period the same scenario played out. No leftist military government had been allowed time in government without being overthrow-Ironsi-Murtala and Buhari.
Compare that with ring wing military government of Gowon-Obasanjo-Babangida and Abacha/Abdulsalam.

History favours the PDP and Jonathan in this election eventhough momentum were with APC and Buhari.
February will tell.
