Unijos Students To Pay N12,000 Each by adakoleagbenu: 2:31pm On Feb 14, 2015
This post is created for past, present and future students of tertiary institutions to lend a voice, create awareness, call on relevant authorities and help the course!

Recall that on 24th of November 2014,after due consultations and due process, students of University Of Jos Embarked on a peaceful protest to press home their demands which include:
-Removal of N10,000 "developmental" fees charged to each student by management. This is because FG as a result of ASUU strike earmarked funds for universities, via needs assessment, etc,

-Reduction in payment of accommodation from N13,500 per bed space to the former price of N4,200

-Removal of penalty of N10,000 as "late registration fee",as most students can barely even afford the normal fee

-Reduction in acceptance fee for new students which is N25,000 per students(alarming)! What are they accepting?
Etc.

Unfortunately on the second day of the protest, some miscreants hijacked it. After blocking the Major Jos-Bauchi Road for hours by students and after several pleas from soldiers of the STF,students refused to leave after which they where shot at with live rounds, injuring at least 7 students with unconfirmed cases of deaths.

Some angry students burnt part of the school's education Lab,broke windows of a newly constructed hostel, and smashed some computers in Admin block.

Unijos authorities after consultations, closed down the school on 25th November and forcefully ejected from the hostels.. School management set up an investigative panel, and their recommendations included suspension of SUG members, total ignorance of student demands, and ordering of students to pay N12,000 each as damages fees!!

Granted some properties were damaged but N10million is excessively generous to cover such fees! N12,000 per students amounts to at least N300,000,000! (300 million)

This is injustice considering that very few properties were damages, and N12,000 is highly exaggerated for each student! This is cheating, characterised by the autocratic regime of the VC Prof Hayward Mafuyai!

Help!!!!!!!

Don't blame the VC....blame the govt.

In 2013....ASUU went on strike to get the trillions of naira promised for university funding in 2009. Govt told them that the purse was not sufficent enough for anything...and offered them 1/3rd of what was originally agreed upon. ASUU agreed....and called off the strike.

Now...the money is not coming. And oil prices have fallen. Thus....your VC has to raise fees to fund the school.

Yes....Covenant may reduce fees soon....because they have alternative sources of IGR. Perhaps you students and the lecturers could get together and draw up a business plan to make more kudi for the university.

Economics and Agric students....and their lecturers...over to you.

Thank you for your opinion, but you see,the new twist is the payment of N12,000 fees as damages. So many students are innocent. And even if we are to pay,the fee is exorbitant. Our school fees is N27,400,which is pretty modest. We just want to see the fruits of the payment of "development" fees because right now,we see nothing!

I can vividly remember when my school protested for reduction of fee, after every thing the fee was reduced by 5k.just like the devil the management mandated all students to pay 10k penalty for damages, that means paying the original fee and an extra 5k,what am I saying, there is little or nothing that can be done it's not all about running to nairaland to lay complain, I think your school sug should have a dialogue with the management and meet a compromise that will partially benefit both the students and management. rioting will be fruitless.

Initially, i thought it was politicians who are the causal of the down turns in this country. But, i come to realize that hatred, greed and an incompassionate heart by almost all assundry is our problem.

Until we destroy this monsters- Sorry for Nigeria

That VC is very insensitive to the plight of the ordinary student, knowing fully well that most of the indegenes sponsor themselves. its rather unfortunate cos he came from a most humble home, had to rely on scholarship to pass through school & is in a perfect situation to understand their plight.. sadly he is a criminal. FG should please intervene

That's what happen when you elect a wrong person to be a president of the students union. How can an SUG president led students to demonstrate just because he perceived increase in fees. Now they are paying for demonstrating and destruction of properties I just pity final year students may God enlarge there heart.

I heared Unijos Students refused to write dia second semester exam; for a session dey hv already paid for. Nawaoh u na no try oo. If u must protest insted of dialogue, mk it peaceful. My cousin dat had only 2wks to graduate has been at home since November and now he has to renew his hus rent of 60k, and pay d 12k. A sch fees of 27k is not dat bad oo, let's be frank here. Any FG sch will tink twice abt reducing sch fees cos monthly subventions from FG are dwindling. Students should stop stalling dia future

Thanks for this...thing is this Vc(Prof. Mafuyai) just doesn't want to find a compromise... The SUG were suspended...Reports have it that they might want to liaise with NANS to settle this

This is the reason students should learn not to be violent when protesting as it finally becomes a profit making venture for the management.
