Effectiveness has to do with achieving set goals while efficiency is about utilizing the least cost in achieving the set goals.
An ideal staff should be able to create a balance between the two. That is the 'optimal' staff.

effective means getting job done ie achieving result while efficient means using minimum input to achieve maximum output ie optimum use of resources. Both qualities are good, bt if pressed further i'll choose efficiency.

without recourse to the dictionary- being effective is better because an effective staff is like a guy who has got a head/brain on him; he has a dash of efficiency in him too...but being efficient might not require the use of much brains but more of brawn. a machine could be 100%efficient..bla bla

The difference is in their TIME MANAGEMENT skill. An efficient staff manages time more than an effective Staff.

Logically. .effectiveness produce the needed results ...it makes EFFECT.
Efficiency on the other hand does all the right things....capable and all. But the final question is ...does it produce the required effect? This is why you need to be effective.

Don't wanna be efficient on the field like Argentina but wins the match like Cameroon in the 1990 world cup. That is effectiveness

the basic diff btw the two is dis.

When you are effective, you are able to carry out a. Project successfully.
When you are being efficient, you were able to maximise your time and effort when working on a project and successfully carry it out.

Effectiveness means getting a required task done, while efficiency means getting a required task done at the least cost.

When somtin is effective it does wat it is expected 2 do, or achieves wat it Ws actually programd 2 do..

Efficiency on d oda hand is doin more than wat somtin is expected 2 do, or achieves more than wat it Ws actually programd 2 do..

E.g If a cuttin machine is expected to cut jst 2 slices of bread n it does, dt is effectiveness... But if same machine cn cut more than 3slices of bread, dt is efficiency..

Goin d extra mile or doin d extraordinary, dt is efficiency..

Someone is effective when he can get results. While efficient is making good use of resources to get those results.

Example GEJ empties our treasury paying middle men and contractors to fight Boko Haram in the end he defeats them, that's being effective. Results gotten.

But GMB avoids unnecessary expenses and instead uses our existing equipment and soldiers (after sacking the corrupt and cowardly ones) plus better intelligence analysis to defeat Boko Haram that's efficient. Results also gotten.

An efficient staff is better.

.. But at times though you have to settle for being only effective

You have to be both effective and efficient to get the job(s) done. In terms- Effectiveness is the ability to get the job done in the right way while efficiency is about being a reliable asset.
The job in hand (task) will require effectiveness to achieve the set goal, but in a rapidly changing business environment where market value, labour and capital demands are very dynamic, Efficient staffs will be assets in EFFECTING continuity and sustainable development of the firm.


If I was to answer that question I would say "I would be both effective and efficient in your company because I believe these competencies go together to assure excellence in the job. Effective staffs will help achieve short term goals, but efficient staffs will ensure long term goals are not compromised due to changes in the business.
Being both effective and efficient would help me work, learn and grow professionally by being an excellently reliable staff"

Depends on the interviewers body language, you should know when to stop talking and let him assimilate and understand what you've said.


This question test three or four things:
1. Listening skill: Does he understand and think before he responds?
2. Excellence: How will he stay excellent in the job?
3. Ambition: Is he after the short term or long term or both?
4. Orientation: does he know the difference between effectiveness and efficiency?


My view tho..other peeps might have superior arguments....

What of the financial prudence sir? Cost minimisation is efficiency. Achieving desired result with the least cost is efficiency.

Effectiveness and Efficiency goes hand in hand and you can be efficient and not effective and vice versa. ...in such situation I would go for Both...Effectiveness simply doing the right thing while Efficiency means doing things right...lets imagine a company trying to adopt new technology and after training the entire staff they all adopted the new technology but it doesn't change the overall productivity. .that shows how efficiency but lack effectiveness

You are asked to come to work by 7am everyday to complete a daily task of collating data. The job rule states that you must collate atleast fifty data everyday before you leave for home. If you go to work by 9am which is like 2 hours later than the original time, and still complete the collation of the fifty data task given to you, you are not efficient but effective because you lack the discipline of coming to work earlier.

Efficiency involves an individual meeting up with the demands and completing the task given to him/her at the right time, right date and right manner while effectively involves completing the task even if it was not done at the right time and right date or manner.

Furthermore, if you are asked to wear your safety gears before performing your daily task in a company and you ignore such command and still went ahead to complete the task without your safety gear, you have worked effectively but not efficiently. Efficiency deals with doing things in an organized manner as directed by your organization while the other measures your ability to complete the said task assigned to you.

you tried friend, but like one of my lecturers would say... I need the key word. Effectiveness is achieving the desired result without considering financial implications ie., realising the stated goal or objective even at a relatively higher cost in spite of cheaper alternatives. While Efficiency on the other hand focuses more on arriving at the stated objective with the least cost among other alternatives. Financial prudence separates the two. Thanks!

I'll choose an efficient staff. The 2 mean almost the same thing but a slight difference which lies in resource and time mgt. An effective staff gets something done using all available resources and time BUT an efficient staff gets work done using minimal resources and time no matter how much of those he/she has. angry

Effectiveness has to do with how impactful a member of staff can be. It's a measure of a person's ability to meet a target.

Efficiency is a measure of how a member of staff utilises and manages resources(including time, man hours, finance) while trying to be effective.

Basically effectiveness asks if a person can meet a target. Efficiency asks how he does so.

A useful analogy is a comparison of 2 soldiers.

Soldier A is armed with a machine gun, while Soldier B is a skilled marksman.

Both are teaked with killing a target surrounded by armed bodyguards.

Soldier A goes in guns blazing, sprays all the bodyguards with his machine gune and kills his target with a grenade

Soldier B kills his target one time with a headshot taken from range with his sniper rifle.

Both soldiers were effective as they both achived the goal of killng their target

However only soldier B was efficient, as he achieved his target without wasting time, energy, money, or bullets.
