Jbenue: It is the executive arm that fixes their salaries. So Buhari could slash it easily once he has the backing of all Nigerians. They shouldn't even be paid salaries anymore. We should pay them just sitting allowances. The first place to start the fight against corruption is to cut their salaries and allowances. |

irunoobo:GEJ is gone. Let it go. But be rest assured that without a drawn out public pretest, even Buhari's government will not make any headway in reducing these outrageous allowances. The 'law makers' would simply frustrate him. They are there for the money. Nothing more, nothing less. 2 Likes |

How they managed to increase & increase it till it got this high is my concern. Its unfortunate that we found our beloved country at this point. We have heard of these jumbo pays before but nothing was really done. If only the NA can debate on this one issue. Cutting down all of these excesses will really cost so much sacrifices. I doubt if there's anyone who can pay the price. |

ozoigbondu:Agreed and supported. Now that we have a very forceful and powerful government, those salaries allowances etc. should be reduced. We expect that from Buhari for the first 100 days in office. That should be his periority. |

Jbenue: I am of the opinion that considering Buhari's age, a 2nd term would likely not be his priority and this would give him the base to be as ruthless as required to rid Nigeria of corruption. GEJ couldn't do certain things because he had his ambition of 2nd term to consider. 3 Likes |

Chinom: The executive only proposes a Budget it is up to the Legislator to approve and pass it thereby making it law. You see how Obama is at the mercy of the US Congress which is Republican controlled. Sure Buhari can play to the galleries and make a show of trying to force the Lawmakers to cut their pay. More than likely this will only serve to turn the Lawmakers against him. If he is smart the strategic thing to do is to build his support base in his first term and get a 2nd term and then when he has nothing to lose make a real concerted effort to bring these lawmaker to heel. If the lawmakers bulk that where we the electorate come in and vote them out after extracting a promise from who ever we vote in to cut their pay. That's how I would do it. The only problem I see with this plan is that the Nigerian Public has an extremely short memory, by rights this should have been a hot burner issue for us to be discussing for the just concluded 2015 elections but I didn't hear pimmm. 4 Likes |

deletrue:Buhari doesn't have the power to slash their salaries. It's only the RMAFC (Revenue Mobilization Allocation And Fiscal Commission) that can do so, and an Act of the National Assembly. 1 Like |

In January of 2012, a presidential committee on public service reform discovered that top government officials in Nigeria take home N1.126 trillion a year in. salaries and allowances – out of a national budget of N4.6 trillion. These public officers constitute just 0.013 per cent of Nigeria’s population. They include 108 senators who each make over $1.7m a year. That alone is $183.4 million (N28 billion). Then the 360 members of the House of Representatives each takes home ove...r $1.2 million, which amounts to $432 million (N65bn). Again, each state governor collects an average of N200 million naira a month just as security vote. In a year, they each get N2.4 billion naira. So, our 36 governors take home N87 billion naira on security votes alone every year. Add our 38 ministers and ministers of state, 100 plus heads of federal and state agencies, over 432 state commissioners, 774 local government area chairmen or caretakers, almost 10,000 councilors and you will understand where the N1.126 trillion goes. ---- robbery of OUR nation by the ruling class---NEVER AGAIN SHOULD WE ALLOW MINDLESS ROBBERS TO RULE NIGERIA AGAIN--- 3 Likes |

I love this ENERGY here. Nigerians are realising their strength and power to control the government. Take it or not "We are the government". Your collective votes were instrumental in voting out a considerably ineffective government. I suggest few days after the swearing in of President-elect, we start a movement on twitter and all available social media to call on government to review and slash the salaries of these law makers. Even International media will recognise this movement and the attention of the president will be drawn to this MEnace. Enough of this sham. If you think $2.2 million dollars is all they earn P.A, then you have been misled as some take huge bribes from individuals and foreign companies to silent any bill that's unfavorable to them at the expense of Nigerians. Light of God is upon Nigeria, all hidden agenda shall be exposed and dealt with by Nigerians. 1 Like |
