B3*0.1 when typed in B5
it multiplies the value in B3 which is 100,000 by 0.1 to give 10,000

0.1 is the numerical equivalent of 10% which is the percentage for tithe

I did that too, but the truth is am sure right now you're better than alot of your mates. Maybe not financially but in the use of Microsoft office @ least. I heard being proficient in the use of Excel alone could give one a decent paying job. Even oil coys use it for petroleum economics. It's not easy to be a good programmer you know. Bros you're too much jor, I recently got a good excel book that will help me become a good model creator & programmer in it. No Nigerian university will teach one how to use Microsoft excel. It was actually in my final year that a visiting prof. from the US made it mandatory to create models & do assignments on Excel spreadsheets while learning petroleum economics. Ever since then I've had this undying desire to be very good at it. Thumbs up for creating this thread, it's a motivator for some lazy ones like me cheesy
I don't know what you studied but engineering is very competitive. So many things to learn bros: Microsoft Office, Schlumberger Techlog, Autocad and so on. Academic/company learning just seems like a never ending journey

I need to solve a problem via MS Excel, and it is about proportionality.
I am tryiing to establish a proportionality between 2 variables, say A1 is 27, and B1 is 110,
if I input A2 as 21, annd I want MS Excel to solve B2 using the relationship between A1 and B1, how do I go about it?
As simple as this might appear, I would welcome your suggestions, or directions on this one.
Thanks.

In cell B2 type (21*110)/27 or( A2*B1)/A1 then click enter.

type the year 2006 on cell A1,2007 on cell B1 and continue up to 2015.
type 160000000 on cell A2, type = 1.021*A2 on cell B2 then press enter key.Having done that, there is what we call autofill, put your cursor on the right bottom of cell B2 when it change to tiny + sign , then drag it to up to year 2015. Goodluck and happy new Nigeria.

Finally

What is VLOOKUP?

V + LOOK+ UP = VLOOKUP

V = Vertical

LOOKUP = Search

VLOOKUP is a function, a predefined formula used to search for information across columns in a table. This function serves a very important purpose, when you have a large data set and you're trying to locate an a text field, number of any sort of string, rather than scrolling several thousands of rows below, this function comes handy.

For the purpose of this illustration, above is a sample table file with basic information.

The table above is an inventory manifest list, there are several "rows" of data with usable information in each column. Assuming that I had 1,000 rows of data and I wanted to search for a "Part #", I will use VLOOKUP feature to automate my search and avoid repetition.

On this table, I will use the part # to lookup the price, therefore, the Part # is our lookup field.

A good example of where VLOOKUP application is utilized is using this function to fill out "INVOICE INFORMATION. I will explain more in details.

The table has SEVEN columns of data

Column a: Part numbers (#)
Column b: Fulfillment Center
Column c: Product group
Column d: Item name (description)
Column e: Qty
Column f: Price
Column g: Extended cost ( # of qty x price per piece)

Now the next portion is using VLOOKUP to search for information.

NOTE: The Lookup Data MUST always be the first left column, this makes the argument easier. In the table, when I enter the function argument, the part number will be our lookup data.

Next, below is a table showing the function

This is the function argument for VLOOKUP

=VLOOKUP(lookup_value, table_array, col_index_num, [range_lookup])

a. lookup_value: This is the value used as a search reference. In the table above, this would be the "part #" = "C6"

b. table_array: This is search reference table. In this case, I will reference the previous tab "Master file", and select B5:H27

c. column_index_num: This is the column referenced to get the resultant information from. In this case, the pricing is what I want. NOTE, it's asking for the "num" meaning number, therefore, I have to count from the left of the "table_array", which is number SIX (6)
d. [range_lookup]: This is explanatory, unless you're seeking an for rounded results, USE the "FALSE" option... False ALWAYS returns an exact match. In this case, I am looking for an exact price for the unique part number.

Combining the information will give us this function argument.

=VLOOKUP(C6, Master File '!B5:H27,6,FALSE)

Having entered this function argument in C7= pricing, because the precedent cell is "null" value, it will return a "#N/A" result. However, the moment I entered a part #, it populates the pricing for that item. This is how VLOOKUPis used. Furthermore, I applied the same rule to the last two and the right should be used for activity exercise.

NOTE: The VLOOKUP function table is different from the previous table, this is because the previous table does not have $$$ signs. Absolute and Relative reference are very important because when a cell is moved, if you want to maintain the cell integrity, it is imperative to make it "ABSOLUTE". To do this, you have to change the reference from "Relative" to "Absolute", by highlight the cell information such as "B5" and press F4. This toggles between both references. I used absolute reference because I wanted to keep the absolute range of B5:H27.

pls am just joining d thread now and am goin tru d pages, Thanks for all your eforts and contributions. my qstion is , how did u combine row 3 n 4 together to bcome one row? seems I ll have a lot of qstion to ask on this vlook up topic. thanks

Use the "Merge & Center"

1. Go to the "Home" page

2. Look to 3rd section: "Alignment"

3. Select row 3 & 4

4. Click on "Merge & Center"

I hope this answers your question.. If you have any question, let me know.

Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet package and a spreadsheet package is an application soft ware that is design for financial calculation and keeping of financial records. Someone shouldn’t be so surprise when I will be making use of Microsoft Excel and Ms Excel together because Microsoft and Ms, is one meaning and they are used for financial calculation, this application are very important for school, banks and every areas of life.

Ms excel is made up of component, this component of Microsoft Excel are divided into different part, like in the case of Ms Excel 2003, Ms Excel 2005 they have Title bar, Menu bar,. Standard tools bar, formatting tool bar, cell address, spreadsheet, scroll bar, status bar.

Microsoft Excel 2003 and Microsoft Excel 2007 also with Microsoft Excel 2010 all have their differences, Ms Excel 2003 and Ms Excel 2005 have the same features and every bars I listed above but Ms Excel 2007 and Ms Excel 2010 also have the same Microsoft Excel feature. These similarities have their importance; they all calculate income and expenditure in a company, in the business company, insurance companies make use of Ms Excel.

Microsoft Excel have a spreadsheet, which most people call work area, or work sheet. This work sheet is where calculation is carried out. This area is divided into four (4) elements and components mean the same thing. So there are four (4) of spreadsheet
