OP, God bless u 4 this post. Presently, I am considering a switch from public to private. Though I am a little scared abt my move. Buh the present situation of the economy is smtin to consider very well.

Every man loves to fly when u mates in the private sector are flying
I will advice u to reconsider ur decision, don't jump because you see people jumping, but jump because u know if u do there's a soft landing for you.

Op, i agree with you in terms of govt job flexibility. This enables future planning, timing and diversification for more income at the end total pay far better than private if your smart and industrious...but if they born you well try it with private, your sack letter is waiting on your table for 3days absence...govt no boss for intimidation,...private if you dont cooperate & protest they will kick ur ass out to the street. Govt job the sweetest abeg! 4pm reach i don close be that*smiles*

So it is better to remain a policeman earning less than 30k than davido's bouncer? I dnt think so.....forget pension.....most govt worker dnt live to collect theirs

Davido's bouncer can will always be his bouncer or perhaps, leave him and open his own outfit if he doesn't spend all his money on groupies.

The policeman that earns 30k today might just become the IG someday.

Government jobs kill IQ faster than Nollywood movies. You go there and see married men and women selling stock fish, crayfish and perfume in the office openly. Can't even apply for government jobs either. The uniformed government jobs are cool though.

I prefer government work because it gives me the time to run my personal businesses as well. Well as in the private sector it's not that easy. I still prefer government work.

People keep on screaming government jobs gives you time to do other things, my question is 'how many businesses do government workers have' how rewarding are they. With their plenty time, what have they achieved compared with their private sector colleagues.

Private sector all the way

You are saying these maybe because you have not been privilege to work in that, most of them may appear wretched cos of the job ethics or rather mentality. But I put it to you that most are hotel eatery and church owners, some may drive old passat to work but come and check dem in evening or sunday with their jeeps, atiku and the likes started from government, even the police most are into sport, entertainment and church owners. Which private establishment apart from some well structured will even give you time to go for interview in another establishments not to talk of setting up business or pursuing your passion so that you should grow more than them? How many privates pays overtime, leave bonus and others, even most deprive their staff of public holidays.imagine when u give a nursing mother one month maternity leave .

Hey Tigress,

Take it easy. You don't know me from jack so you don't know about my dispositions to 'government jobs'. Government job doesn't thrill everyone and i am one of such. (and this isn't for lack of opportunity/access to government jobs). Which kind of job will force one to 'form poverty' just not to attract attention. Sunday flexing, really? So Monday to Friday is for suffer-head?...No, i'll pass life is too short abeg.

Interesting....That of the ''LAZY CO WORKER"is so true,I over experienced that during my NYSC year
Even me. I too had the same experience during my NYSC year. I served in a local govt council. Of course am sure u know workers' attitude to work in most local govt councils. Some dont usually come to work at all in most days. Some will come and sign their names and go for their private businesses. While some of those that are actually in their offices will either be playing ludo game, or gossiping, or sleeping on their office tables or doing some other unnecessary things in the office. Truely speaking, these are what I actually witnessed during service year in the L.G. council where I served.

I work for Lagos State Govt. And in terms of personal development I get it there,n pay not high, but have the time to run my biz well,d lazy aspect of Gov. Jobs, not all Ministry's u find ideal peeps and if u find mayb the clerks, non professional workers, if u a professional say my field, Insurance and others alike Engineers, lawyers, Doctors, etc you will know that you can't be idle. You will always have something to do, no fear of sudden sack, have access to cheap medical services, have u RSA account now represents the old pension system, for lagos state, good insurance policy covering u Sunday to Monday, incase of accident even when off work, and many more. U have rest of mind, dnt need rush to work by 5am and get back home 11pm. Many more benefits, remember the pay isn't much but at least for lagos state u are paid promptly,

To me govt jobs are preferable. I know of one man who is my brother's close friend. He is an Accountant and he was working in Access Bank but he later got a job in FIRS Port Harcourt branch. One day my brother and I paid him a visit and it was then I was convinced that govt jobs are preferable. It was the man that actually told us so, having compared what he witnessed when he was a banker and what he is now seeing in FIRS.
Re: Pros And Cons Of Government Jobs by blackpanda: 8:15pm On Apr 29, 2015
This post is heavily flawed because it generalizes heavily on what is obtainable in public service.

It is important to note the differences. First of all, public service is not the same as civil service. Civil service refers to those who are employed by the civil service commission (mostly ministries). Every person working for the public is a public servant i.e national assembly workers, police, govt parastatals etc. Now the major differences:

1. SALARY
Generally civil service salary and allowances is very poor. Civil servants (ministry) salary schedule ranges from minimum wage N18,000 to about N250000 per month for permanent secretaries. A person would have worked at least 10years in civil service before you can earn up to 100k per month.
Some parastatals pay better. This is one of the things gej govt failed to address: the irregular and haphazard payment structure.

2. JOB SECURITY
Civil service jobs are more protected. Even when ministries are scrapped, the workers get re-absorbed into the system and posted elsewhere. Unlike govt agencies and parastals where the workers will be sacked.

3. JOB SATISFACTION
It is easy to get frustrated by work in civil service. This is because workers keep doing the same thing over and over again for the entire year. Civil servants are not usually recognised or rewarded for going the extra mile. This is why most of them dont bother

Don't get me wrong am not mocking you that you are not working in the govt sector or neither am I saying u won't be opportuned to but am only analysing your points and educating you on pros. Where you are working is immaterial cos I never mentioned mine to sound like someone bragging. The important thing is the job satisfaction. NL is a forum where debate and contributions are being made its nothing personal.

only thatwhich is in your hand that is truly yours. Of what benefit is pension to a work earns 80k per month and dies at 50 years, yet to receive gratuity and pension haven worked for 25 years.

Now compare this to a private sector worker earning 150k per month and dies at 50 without pay off, haven worked for 25 years also.

Now who earned more .

Now compare this to a private sector worker earning 150k per month and dies at 50 without pay off, haven worked for 25 years also.

Now who earned more .

Its simple bro. The annual salary differential between the private sector worker and that of the government worker is around 840k (in other words, the private worker earns 840k more than the government worker annually). If the government worker is an industrious investor, he can be saving around 40% of his income (that's around 30k) for a spate of say 5 years. His annual savings will be around 360k.

Since government jobs are flexible and they give you time to pursue other endeavours, he can invest that annual savings of 360k in a viable business that will bring him a monthly 15% Return on Investment (ROI). That's like 648k extra income for the government worker. The wage differential between them has now reduced to 192k.

Now imagine that the government worker reinvests like 70% of that 648k extra income he earned (that's approximately 454k) in the second year in another viable business that will bring him that same 15% ROI monthly. In the second year the government worker will be having an annual 816.48k extra income. If you add this extra income to the government worker's normal annual income, his gross income will be totalling around 1.8million.

This means he's now earning almost a million more than our private employee in just the second year. Now let's imagine if this government worker keeps reinvesting like 60% of that extra income the subsequent years, he will be swimming in millions in just 5 years. But our private worker won't be given the time the government worker has to pursue this entrepreneurial endeavour thereby making his pay stagnant.

Your salary isn't what makes you a wealthy man, its a job that provides you sufficient time and steady income to finance your entrepreneurial dream. You can take this fact to the bank.
