Lol

Infomizer:
Dude: “If no be say you talk sorry ehn, I for punch you like this (he feigns a punch clearly not directed at me so I didn’t mind) or make I gbege you like this” (he then grips my jean pants by the waist on the left side and made as if to lift me).

I can completely relate with this, same Ikorodu garage, same technique... Though I didn't accept the handshake.... When he tried other tactics, I screamed loudly out him, the pickpocket himself got scared. He then walked away (Mission failed) . When confronted with stuffs like this, you don't smile or accept their friendship also, show no sign of fear or cowardice.

As I just walked pass university of suya spot.
I just noticed sometime stepped on me from behind, immediately the guy said sorry, I also said sorry.
I was surprise to see the same guy turn back to engage me in discussion.

I enjoyed the way OP narrated the story. I also have a story to share. Mine was funny and at the same time not funny at all. I only haven't gotten the chance to sit and write the narrative story for Nairalanders to read.

OP, I have one advice for you, start writing! I like you for your writing.

@OP, I wasn't lucky as you were. I had a terrible experience in the hands of pickpockets like four years ago, when I was still working in a company on agindigbi road, ikeja. It was on a Saturday afternoon and I just finished from work, I just exited the company's gate when one of two guys on a bike waved at me and asked to wait. I first ignored him but he kept on making gestures that implied that he knew me somewhere so I stopped.
He came to where I was standing and we both shook hands. I wanted to leave cos I was feeling unease then he asked me if I knew anyone by the name ifeayin that was living in omole estate. I told him that I had a friend by the name but he was living in ikeja and not omole. The next I noticed was the guy grabbing me by trouser, telling me that he would have done worst to me if I had offended him the day he saw me with my friend in ikeja.
Bro, I was lost and was just wondering about what was happening. I shook the guy's hand again and we both agreed that it is good to always do good and the guy went for the bike that brought him and he left.
As I was thinking about the drama that just happened, my mind quickly went straight to my wallet which was inside my back pocket and I felt relieved that it was there and immediately I felt that my front pocket was no longer heavy, my phone was gone. I was dumbfounded cos I didn't even know what to do, I couldn't scream and I couldn't do anything. I called thenumber but it was switched off.
Ever since then I have stopped giving audience to people I don't know on the road.

You really deserve to earn that beautiful slap @ Ikorodu. How can you be so relaxed to exchange 2 statements with unknown person in Lagos. Are you a learner? Thank God that Oshodi has been renovated and refurbished.
Until God will provide your own car, watch and shadow in Lagos ooooooooo, else you yourself fit disappear (God forbid)

Very interesting read. You have impressive storytelling skills.

I have an almost identical experience which happened in Obalende one early morning sometime in 2009 or so. I wasn't as lucky as you though, as I lost my phone to the miserable-looking and guttural-sounding lowlife. Ever since then I always instinctively tap my pocket at a rate of 7 times per second whenever I have to walk through crowded /black spots, or when using public transport.

*@OP,if not that u mentioned where this thing happened, I would have asked if it happened at Ikeja. Exactly same way they picked my 2k on a sunday morning. I felt intimidated cos the guy waz someone I could take on comfortably

Fast forward, 2 months later this same guy did same thing to me at another bus stop within same ikeja and it was very late in the night. The slap I gave to him on thAt day, I don't think I have ever given it to any human being in my life. I was able to take the earphone I saw on him, I seized the dirty footwear he was putting on. Before I said jack, the guy took to his heels and was shouting "Azeez o, Azeez o. O boy na so me run towards another direction with the seized items.
Most times they operate individually and they look so unkempt
Those guys seem to be everywhere in Lagos and they have same modus operandi.

Well mine was not theft but a day light duping at computer village ikeja.I was on Pass from work far from Kaduna in 2013.It all started when a street guy approached me to buy his Bold 5 for 20k.Knowing fully well that the price at that time was llke 30k upward,i quickly jumped at the offer but tried to bargained the price to 18k which he obliged.I thoroughly check the phone which was perfectly ok.Then i made way to the nearest ATm to get some money to settle him. After collecting the phone as i made payment,i began my journey back to my destination having pocketed the phone. But this guy kept following me as if he was escorting me as such.i was amazed when he started asking me irrelevant question like where i am going and some useless question like that. When i reached Awo roundabout in ikeja,a guy approach us.Before i know what was happening, he started punching the phone seller, telling him not to sell phone at road side again.'Mufu i don warn u nt to sell phone for road side again'exclaimed the supposed new guy.All this was accompanied with new punch and slap.I was dumb-founded if not confuse as i stand there watching the drama. The new guy ask me authoritatively to return the phone back to him and collect my money, which i did. That is the beginning of my problem. As soon as i handed the phone back to him,i didnt even care to check the money he return back to me.I still remember that moment with fond memory. After he gave me the money,he disapeared with the new guy .!I was left confused.Well i later regained my sense back to check what was given to me,alas it was a one thousand note wrap with remaining once being a white paper cut-sized to rhyme with the 1k note.I check my back which was a shop, people where laughing secretly, apparrently they know what had had happened but choose to be an on-looker. That was not my first time in lagos,i was born and bred in lagos before mooving to Kaduna in 2013 due to my work.I am a trained soldier.I complained to Police attached to the village but nothing was done.I feel like killling someone that day because i was treated like a fool.Very painful.I went back to the spot i met him where i see his fellow 'accomplice' whom even threaten to hit me if i didnt get a life.I was left with no choice than to use my military power.I went to ikeja cantonment to inform my colleague. Two soldiers followed me back to computer village where i arrested those guys that do the same business like them. After much torture at the barrack, they confess to know those guys who dupe me but vow to pay me up.I collected the money back from them. One thing in army is sweet, and that is blanket Job.You buy job, another man can serve the jon for you.Or only one person can buy job for a whole group of people. That how i collected my money back from their friend while i tell them to held those one on the run for accoutable for their loss.

Wat a story! I feel ur pain bro!..had TE smtym im 2010 in Yaba..I ran into a Fashola campaign crowd..I didn't mind them. I just went on my way only to be accosted by one tout who jostled me with a 'you be PDP' distraction, grabbed me in the leg and made to lift me up! I was stil busy tryin to find a response. He shook me and let me off. I was grateful that d episode was over only to dicover my precious nokia C1 was gone! A split second later and d culprit was lost in d crowd!

Correct! I believe this stories die. Was in Nigeria in 2011 when Wizkid released his first album at Eko Hotels. As usual Eko hotels gate don pack full of people towards the wee hours of the show maybe to glance at celebs but since the place is close to that beach at that corner (can't recall the name), all those area guys self follow join the people.
So, as the show was winding down around 2-3am, I got a call from my friend who was stranded at the gate (outside gate o) and couldn't get back in.
I went out. First error!
As Mushin boy, I enter the howling crowd trying to locate my friend with my phone on my ear...na so this guy just stroll come o...smiling sheepishly n obviously 'tinted' wink
Guy: how far chairman, u dey find somebody?
Me: no worry I don see am...
The guy was either sizing me up or looking round me to see how to collect everything on my body...Nice converse, leather wrist bracelet, accessories, etc...my guy was approaching, obviously he had been obtained.
Na so the dude say one thing one thing and decided to demonstrate it by hooking my troussers around the belt n jacking me up...apparently trying to force the phone out if my pocket...But as a Mushin niggi...I head butted the guy...and before I say jack 3 of his cohorts joined and were like 'hey hey wetin happen etc etc'...I said guy dey watch oh, I no be bolo oh...na me u wan ayaj comot phone for my body? If I halla na so dem go burn u live...etc I throway voice (Area slang)...
Na Wetin save my phone and voice recorder that day be that...
Lagos life eh...
