Weak Naira: Worried Investors Sell Shares For 6th Consecutive Day by Seun(m): 1:17pm On Jul 09, 2015
Nigerian stocks fell to a three-month low and the naira hit a new record low on the parallel market on Wednesday, as investors who were worried about a shortage of dollars on the currency market sold shares, traders said.

The Nigeria Stock Exchange (NSE), which has the second-biggest weighting after Kuwait on the MSCI frontier market index, dropped for the sixth consecutive day as investors pulled out of equities to short-dated Treasury bills in search of yield.

Investors had hoped for a sustained rally after smooth elections in March. But markets have taken a hit from worries over the continued slide in the naira and the impact of persistently low oil prices on government finances.

“We believe the uncertainties within the forex market may have triggered further sell-offs by foreign portfolio investors,” said Ayodeji Ebo, head of research at Afrinvest.

“The persistent pressure and increased (dollar) demand suggest a devaluation of the naira is imminent,” he added.

The central bank, worried about rising inflation, has said it is in no mood to devalue the naira again, after it tightened access to hard currency for the import of a wide range of goods.

Since the central bank measures, the naira has weakened steadily on the parallel market, hitting a new record low of 233.50 to the dollar on Wednesday.

Is there hope for Nigeria?

Since 1960, prices in this country have only gone up, aside from prices for sim cards.

There has never being a sector where prices came down, aside from GEJ's reduction of fuel pump price from N97-N87. I have a feeling the naira is still on a free fall.

Something needs to be done before N1-1 Zimbabwean dollars

This is now getting out of hands, few days after PMB was sworn-in stocks prices went up.

But now!

USD is skyrocketing at the exchange desks

Stocks is falling beyond threshold

Power situation has not improved

Cost of manufacturing in Nigeria is becoming too high, breaking-even and making margin require the manufacturers to increase selling price this has in turn put pressure on the disposable income of the consumers.

We actually expected a real CHANGE! But at the moment the situation is terrible.

Hit like if you dont regret voting for GEJ

Gerrarohere pvnk

What has natural dynamics of economics got to do with voting pattern?

The Naira was first devalued during his reign
We started struggling with our ability to defend the Naira during his reign
Our economic outlook already pointed towards unstable during his reign

So why would any sane human continue on the same path hoping/praying for a change in fortune

Oya go get a cake or something and run along

Am sure Buhari is working, but even Moses elected people to govern the Israelites with him, this is a direct consequence of not electing ministers

No it's not. No amount of confidence as a direct result of appointment of ministers will help steady the ship.

We need to re-invigorate our economy and stop relying on the black gold as it's simply the ONLY way out

The name parallel market has been altered in recent time, CBN already closed all avenues to source dollars including RDAS etc.

I presume the only available means of getting USD is through the parallel market, inter-bank is another tales..
