MTN Group released a press statement on Tuesday confirming that it had not agreed to pay any fine to the Nigerian Communications Commission and was still negotiating with the government. Whilst negotiations continue, the South African Parliament is worried about the implications of the alleged violation of trade relations with not just Nigeria but with other countries.

According to an article in Reuters, South Africa’s head of parliamentary telecoms portfolio, Mmamoloko Kubayi confirmed this worry by saying;

“It is important for South Africa to increase trade relations with other African countries but if something like this happens we get worried about our reputation and the impact that would have on South African companies wishing to expand on the continent,”

MTN has a lot of investments in Nigeria ranging such as Shoprite, Stanbic, SAB Miller (owners International Breweries) etc. and continues to leverage on their technical expertise and capital to sell services and products to the largest economy in Africa by GDP and by population.

MTN share price was down 4.98% today and has been down by about 20% since the fines were announced by the NCC.

Can they stop singing reggae blues already.

Pay the fine cause this is a new Nigeria, there's no bribing or conniving your way out of this, they can't even go to court,)that would make their case worse.

MTN had better acted responsible enough and pay up these fine cause if it were customers owing MTN,they'd find a way to collect the money in double.

Why should they be worried ?
They should call on their companies in Nigeria or other part of the word to follow the lay down rules so that they can make peace.

Just tell your companies that there is a new no-nonsense government in town.

Going forward, they should learn to play by the rules.

If it was during the days of a particular administration - where stealing is not corruption and yams are kept with the goats, I am sure MTN would have been laughing at NCC hysterically.

They have reasons to be.

Before you say that fine is too much, know that MTN has been indirectly aiding terrorism in Nigeria by refusing to deactivate unregistered lines. BH guys and other cronies use unregistered lines to perpetrate evil on our land.

They want to spin it and accuse Nigeria of violating trade relations and being against SA businesses, but sorry, when you don't obey the law of the land, you have to pay. It's quite simple.

The amount of the fine shows us the gravity to which NCC feels damage have been done with those lines.

Let it be known that Nigeria is not attacking SA businesses, we don't practice XENOPHOBIA in Nigeria.

By the time we finished fining dstv, shoprite and stanbic; we will be able to afford modern rail from Lagos to Abuja, and PH to Kano.
Thats for all the times we have been overpaying for services not rendered.
