I will try not to price again but ensure some form of balance

It makes a lot of sense.

debolly:
Op is correct but some of the sellers too like hiking prices,& when they see their bargaining counterparts they feel cheated upon.
When a good's original price is 500#, they'll call it 2000#. I don't waste time I divide whatever the amount is into two.
Just like the OP said, these people hike prices to survive not to live extravagant lifestyles. Adding 200 or as little as 50naira to something is not much. I bought a wristwatch for 18k some months ago only to see the same wristwatch on Aliexpress selling for 7k when converted to Naira. Boutiques, supermarkets and all make big money from us and when it's time to enrich these petty traders, na then our bargaining instinct go dey sharp. All is well sha.

This is me speaking. If you sell 100 bucks thing for me for 1000, if I can afford it, I pay. Causes quarrel between my wife and I all the time.

But you will walk into supermarket feeling like King Kong and buy something that shouldn't cost less than #600@ 1200........

I don't bargain. Though if the person tries to outsmart me...it gets me very angry. grin...and I would show you that I am angry.

I went to the market sometime ago, the wheel barrow guy that moved my things to my car, very correct guy! They usually charge 60-100N, but the moment he saw my car...he said 'Small madam, just give me anything'...I smiled...told him 'I no even wan pay'... he said 'that one follow kwa' hahaha

Then I opened my wallet and gave him 1k, in 100s. Choi, come see prayer.

The next week, same mkt. This one turned out to be greedy, the moment he saw car, he said 300N.
I got very angry o. 'I said ehnn, do I work in Central bank? Or you think I don't know the price?'
I use vex give am N100, he is lucky I approximated it to the nearest hundred.

What I am trying to say is, their attitude influences my own attitude.

Looool

Some of those ''poor'' road side vendors don build houses, trained their children in good schools, etc. cheesy

Some remain by the road side cos they have no idea how to make their business big. Some make more money than those ''polished'' malls (most collapse after few years).

A road side banana seller will definitely make more profit than that vendor selling banana at shoprite. Do you know how much it cost to rent a square metre space at Ikeja city mall? Lol

Are you aware most of those sellers and sales reps at shoprite are graduates (some have MSc.s)? Can you afford their salaries?

Do you know what it takes to power A.Cs and Generators? smh.

Never you estimate those road side sellers. My former landlord (a dirty road side mechanic) has 3 cars, a landlord to over 6 tenants (including level 12 and 13 federal civil servants).

Dey there make pant dey wear you. No bargain, they form big boy inside car. Na you sabi.

I will keep bargaining until I am comfortable with the price. If you don't like it, don't sell. Not my biz!

I don't haggle when am buying from low earning people like myself and most of the time I tell them to keep the change even if its more than the price of what am buying.

Everytime I take okada, same thing it's always keep the change and they look amazed.

If a bike man is taking me to Pepper soup joint or eatery I ask for what he wants and buy his as well.

Cos I know they are struggling.

Not doing showmanship...but that is who I am...A hustler.

It will be hard for small vendors to fix price for their goods love... Only the likes of Shoprite can do such. You know they get their products in different ways especially fruit sellers and live stocks....
I understand. . Whenever you get goods, price tags for those goods should be same.. I pass a small shop, buy a bottle of groundnut at #600, my friends passes that same day and buys at #400, shuuuu sad

At least those goods gotten under same conditions should have same prices....

However, I get the op's message and I have absorbed it... smiley

I never bargain excessively wit dos road-side vendors because dey sell wat I NEED.

Dos malls usually sweat hard to get my money becos majority of wat dey sell r Ostentatious WANTS. N as a street boi, I knw whr 2 get dir alternatives.

More cash 4 me.

True talk, but with this kinda mindset, you open yourself to be cheated. The society we live in is cruel. I was once told that an average bunch of banana on the road is 800. The same thing you can find in the market for 200. Sorry, I no be mugu.

So make we pack money dey give them yafuyafu eh?do they provide the comfort and assurance we get at shopping malls?its is part of the taxe we pay through vat charges at the mall that services such as road, hospitals etc are maintained and provided for these people you mentioned.
CuteMaryJ:
Most times when we walk into big malls, boutiques, supermarkets, we never question their prices. We pay exactly what we see on the price tags and even hand out tips to the staff. But the moment we are out of these shops and want tobuy banana, our bargaining game gets off to the roof.

Poor widow with 12 hungry children at home tells you banana is N100. She even takes out her time to explain how difficult it wasfor her to even buy it, how the economy is so tough. But we insist that if it's not N50, we are not paying. Some of us even step back into our cars and make to drive away.

But because 'half bread is better chin chin', this woman is forced to call you back and sell to you at little or no gain. In her heart, she cries, she's worried about how she'll survive with her children. She silently reassures herself that 'It's well. God will definitely provide.'' While you happily chop the luscious banana.

Take some seconds out and think about this, guys. Please don't bargain hard with small vendors like this. They do business not to buy designer bags, Gucci shoes but to LIVE and EAT!

Love,
Laila Ijeoma

Even though you've tried adding emotion to your story, you still havent said anything.

What you should be fighting for is educating such women on how best to run a business. As a business person, it is important to set your standard. If you don't want the price of your product to be bargained, do the needful and attach a fixed price!

The fault of this is totally the business person's and deserves no sympathy. What they do is bad business practise and they should bear the consequences it has on their business.

But as usual, sitting on your laptop/phone and "typing" on issues instead of actually "doing something" is always easier.

Nigerians need to let go of sentiments if we really want things to work

I know some traders are like that but many of them have similar price tags. We all know that lets say 5 oranges cost 100 bucks but sone people will want to buy 5 for 45 bucks from a poor roadside seller knowing full well that the vendor has almost no choice between hunger anf selling at a slight loss. I know lots of people with that mind set. Its okay to bargain but not okay to take advantage of their poverty.
