Shockingly, I'm guilty of the above.

And I regret it from the deepest part of my heart. Henceforth, I shall make amends.

Thanks for this message, OP!

No need to get emotional.

The fault of this is totally the business person's and such person deserves no sympathy. What they do is bad business practise and they should bear the consequences it has on their business.

Even as a guy, frankly speaking, I became emotional, especially after looking at the banana seller and caring mother's pix...I just derive joy in loving and caring for these ones... Thanks @OP. :-

Most times when we walk into big malls, boutiques, supermarkets, we never question their prices. We pay exactly what we see on the price tags and even hand out tips to the staff. But the moment we are out of these shops and want tobuy banana, our bargaining game gets off to the roof.

Poor widow with 12 hungry children at home tells you banana is N100. She even takes out her time to explain how difficult it wasfor her to even buy it, how the economy is so tough. But we insist that if it's not N50, we are not paying. Some of us even step back into our cars and make to drive away.

But because 'half bread is better chin chin', this woman is forced to call you back and sell to you at little or no gain. In her heart, she cries, she's worried about how she'll survive with her children. She silently reassures herself that 'It's well. God will definitely provide.'' While you happily chop the luscious banana.

Take some seconds out and think about this, guys. Please don't bargain hard with small vendors like this. They do business not to buy designer bags, Gucci shoes but to LIVE and EAT!

It's true I have always said there is no point bargaining with petit traders. How much is 50 or 100 naira difference that u can't afford to lose? Especially you that would happily splash 200k on a new bag or phone at Mega Plaza

If anyone is rich and yet bargain prices...that person is greedy and perhaps very stingy!... It isn't about wasting money...its about using dat little medium to assist people.
.
.
Now! Using ur instance. Buying 5-Oranges for N100 and ur friend buys 7-Oranges at the same amount at the same kiosk... It might be becoz ur friend has been patronising the person's business and the person decides to encourage ur friend with bonuses!
.
.
Please! Don't bargain with this people selling at the roadside... You can imagine moving from one supermarket to another simply becoz u need a special price with good quality stocks and u'll pay for it without questioning! But will agree within ur thoughts dat bargaining with the roadside sellers is not to waste money...with little things u buy from them...compare to the thousands u count and pay when buyin at the supermarkets!

my dear this is a lovely write up.

but you see in life....as you think so your are...

not all the charity in the world can help a man till he/she changes their thought...my point? the mall owners think big BELIVE their made...hence its a natural law that they will get what they believe

unfortunately the poor ones THINK, woe is me and will always attract such thoughts or conditions that relate best with their thought process.

the best one can do for these people is EDUCATION ON HOW TO LIFT THEIR THOUGHTS....for thoughts are REAL things and the after math of what our eyes see are the effecst of these real things,

this is summary of what all self help books are about, and also VALIDATED BY THE BIBLE ''FOR AS A MAN THINKETH SO HE IS''

lalai think of it...why do u think they rich always get richer? and the poor poorer? is God fair yes? is life fair yes? do people understand that ARE LIVES ARE GOVERNED BY LAW ....NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO hence all the suffering etc and the notion that life isnt fair

Imagine you have a growing child in your car and you stop to buy something by the road side. You are giving a price and straightaway out of pity you buy without bargain. Are you teaching your child anything about efficient resources management? Capital NO. It is proper to make bargain. If we feel however compelled to do charity, we can then go ahead and put something on top of agreed price to help. Most importantly for those who have kids, the message should always be clear that you can't waste resources even when 'you think you have excess' and that business must be distinct from charity. Though to do charity is commendable.
In real sense resources are scarce and nobody has all he needs. At least that's what rudimentary economics taught us and that is what life has come to reveal to me.

this is really true. that is why when I don't bargain too much with these traders even when I was still a student some people think it's because I have someone giving me steady stipend or I'm shy to bargain but they don't know I actually put these things into consideration

Yea, I don't have much. Yes, but for a long time now I have stopped bargaining with less privileged sellers. It's a way of helping them. Sometimes they're even surprised that you didn't bargain with them. It's just a way of helping them.

You obviously don't know that these folks that sells by the roadside won't sell to you for the same price they sell to the mechanic across the other side of the road.
Don't ever think that they are not smart enough to know that with your status that you won't hassle price with them for so long .

Trust me , most of the time you buy from them without asking too much questions you're probably buying at an abnormal price compared to what they sell to their everyday folks......Go figure.

Sorry, but you are getting things entirely mixed up. Laila never said you shouldn't bargain but bargaining hard is where the problem lies. When you are in shoprite, do you teach your child how to bargain? Do you take him/her to the cashier and start pricing goods, NO! So what's your point?

Op is correct but some of the sellers too like hiking prices,& when they see their bargaining counterparts they feel cheated upon.
When a good's original price is 500#, they'll call it 2000#. I don't waste time I divide whatever the amount is into two.

the only way a person can cheat me is if I'm buying the goods for the first time and have absolutely no idea the price to expect. those classes of traders the OP is talking about even if they hike their price it won't be more than a few naira. but those guy in our supermarket and the rest hike in thousands

In as much as i can relate what the OP is driving at,Charity is charity and business is business...No matter how wealthy u r,u will always want to spend less on an item that can be priced down.Much so, shopping in a bigger place like shoprite and the likes goes beyond just buying an item but an experience....they offer u a parking space, air conditioned environment, varieties to choose from, easy means of payment[pos and co],sales reps to attend to ur request and so on,all of that cost money,Money,MONEY

My point is that whatever must be done must be done well. Nothing should be done haphazardly. If I must bargain, I bargain well. Don't forget that often times most things I bought by the roadside could actually have been got from the supermarket. The fact that I didn't go to supermarket is because I want to satisfy myself that I have a good bargain.
However in my argument I have left room for charity, if I feel I see someone I adjudged to be in need I can then offer to give him/her additional money apart from the price paid for the goods. There are times you leave your change for people to go away with. Infact personally there has been times I have given someone cash without necessarily picking what she has to sell, I left the good for her to sell and still make extra money.
We shouldnt always believe because people dress raggedly that they don't have the capacity to cheat us. The goods people sell have cost price and bargain is allowed because margin has been left for that in the price you are first given. No serious businessman whether big or small will sell at a lost and even in big business the profits are usually very small but a thousand of small profits add to make big profit. That's how business is done.
If we want to do charity let us know it is charity and when it is business we should know it is business. It is more pertinent we do this when we have children around us or else we create impression in their minds that money can simply be thrown away out of pity.

Re: Something Really Urgent To Ponder On..... by CoCoLav(f): 11:23am On Jul 27, 2015
Which one is all this sentiment?
I will bargain!
Even they will ask you to price.
Truth is they are greedy
Imagine going to buy something, the woman will tell you #1000, #900 last. What does that mean? Why did she say 1000 in the first place?
Show me a trader that will sell less than the cost price especially in this Lagos.
I went to buy banana some days ago and the woman said #800. I immediately walked away and she was asking me to come back and price. I know banana ranges from 250-350 so why #800 if not greed?
Truth is that they want to make as much gain as possible especially from those who don't know how to price.
