You didn't specify if its N250k or $250k a month. My guess that its the former.
If so, by my calculations of the current exchange rate, d you want to come back here for just over $1,000 a month??
shocked shocked shocked
I reserve my comment!

Bro abeg 250K no be money o! Thats like $1000/month. Even in Naija that wont get your far.

Finish your studies first. I know someone who relocated to Nigeria with a multunational on a package worth over N2M/month gross. That kind of offer is what should make you consider relocating not the peanuts you have been offered.

A company that had to put employing new people on hold due to poor economy will be the first to let people go if there is an economic slowdown or downturn.

If your leaving the States now does not mean a permanent shut at the possibility of your residency their, I'll say you should take up the offer in Nigeria. The job will fill the experience void in your career and it's also an opportunity to advance it in your field. Who says the comapny cannot later send you abroad at some point?

However, if leaving US now means you cannot later get your residency, you have to weigh how much you value it with the job offer.

I can understand your fears, considering your education qualification and the likes 250k is just there, then its nt dat bad,if you can manage .also I will advise you to get a resident sty in the US first ,the green card before coming back to Nigeria to stay.good that you are getting married to a Nigerian even if some of them are not worth it,it will be worse if you marry an American, never desert you own people.my advise is that there are no easy jobs anywhere just come back home after securing ur resident visa ,let's make this country great together!!!!

Hello Everyone

Let me start by saying this is not an opportunity to judge or criticize my decisions or lack of it there of. I would also try to be as open and forthcoming as possible regarding all information to help you offer any opinions either from personal experience of inferred ideas.

I already have a direction am inclined to lean towards but its not set in stone and am very much open to ideas from others (I actually welcome it as i like to be thorough and get all the information i can have before making decisions)

I was recently offered a position in Nigeria due to start in a month at the latest however i am currently rounding off a research program in the united states (6 months to finish). The prospective employer will not defer the position till i finish in 6 months time. I had interviews with the vice president of the company when i was in Nigeria last year and a couple of other interviews but i guess due to the instability of the economy (elections and all), the offer never materialized till now. i consider the offer a place to start and while I cant be specific about the exact figure here, its upwards of 250k/month after Tax.

Before you make your decisions based on the offer or my current academic situation, here is a little about me. I have a BSc (Nigeria), MSc (Uk) and MEng (USA).... All in engineering (so i wont consider the figure impressive however its not an entry position and that is my basic pay so there are other benefits). i have paid work experience in the Uk and US and took up an unpaid work experience in an Oil & gas servicing company in Nigeria for about 6 months. needless to say i am well educated but without enough experience in my chosen field and this offer hopes to fill that void.

if you also want to ask why am i not eager to come back to Nigeria? the economy seems fairly unstable now, Iran deal is sure to devastate the oil sector further and destabilize the Nigerian economy even more for those that understand the vicissitudes of the Iran deal. I do have access to getting residency papers in the USA which will coincide with the time i finish my research or a few months after without doing anything shady or sinister (most of my family are here anyway). I am also fully aware that with or without papers, jobs are not automatic any where but you will agree with me that its a little easier abroad than in Nigeria. a good example is the current offer i am considering where i still needed an introduction to setup the interviews and even though i did all the grunt work, i wont have even gotten in the door without knowing someone. The company as a matter of policy does not even advertise positions.

A little about the company: international company with huge investment portfolio in the millions of dollars, where its based should not be important but its on the island. cant reveal more than that about the company.

please let me know what you think or what you would do in my shoes. Also i would be happy to answer any questions that help you offer better advise provided its something i can reveal

Thanks in advance

Finish your research work. Its worth more than 500k a month paying job!

I've once been in your shoes but trust me, It's not easy making a decision in this kind of situation but honestly Nigeria is not as bad as you think it is. You've got good educational background so fear not but in my own case I can move in and out of the country at any time cos I've got the paper I needed. Honestly coming back home have been one of the best decision cos it erase my fear and got a good job. You've a good qualification and so many companies will want to hijack you but the decisions is yours to make. choose wisely.

If I were in your shoes, I wouldn't return to Nigeria since I have a legit means of getting my residency papers.. Have you tried searching for work over there? At least you have some international work experience/education. .. Or getting a job over there seems harder?

Except you have other ties here in Nigeria, I see no reason for your return. . To me, the job alone isn't worth it.... People with jobs that pay way more than what you just mentioned scramble for Canada skilled immigration programme and Us visa lottery when it was still on...

Also, our present economic situation seems to be getting worse.. how much is $1 in Nigeria? ... With average earnings in the US, your money turns to millions of Naira..... We keep hoping things get better though. ..

The decision is yours, all the best....

Long term goal? I believe you can make it anywhere but what's the long-term goal?
250k is peanuts considering ur qualification and I don't it's worth passing up ur program for.
Take the option that bring u closer to your long term goal. Some Opportunities r distractions from the main goal.

Why do people always think once you're abroad, the job offer is alot better than what you get back home ? It is not always the case. OP,weigh the pros and cons of your offer and do what you think is best.

The remuneration package should be the only deciding factor in accepting or rejecting the offer.
The offer as described isn't enough to suspend your research program so i would almost certainly reject the offer.

You are already employable and attractive to potential recruiters so exercise a lil patience to get your research over and done with before hitting the job market.

Lol, you guys seem to forget that the 250k is basic. With a basic of 250k, when the allowance are added, it is possible it runs into.... (400k? If not more)

It does not stop anonymous from moving back later with more of an experience. My only worry is abandoning the Ph. D. Can you do something about the Ph. D, I don't like leaving things half done. Can you commute to complete it? If you can take the Job without losing the Ph. D then I would say go for it.

Haven been to America and come back with a clean record, nothing stop you from going back. I have always believed in coming back to ones own country.

But then op, it is really your decision.

Based on your post, I would suggest you start applying for jobs over there that can commence after your research program. It will do your CV a whole lot of good than truncating it for this job offer. You can even apply to jobs over here, and who knows; you might end up with a better offer.

My advice, please stay back. Even if you add 100k as other added allowances to the 250k salary, it is not worth it with your qualifications.

A fresh graduate from the Uni without MSc that is lucky to get employment with any of the big IOCs and Oil servicing firms earn above 300k a month. You have a good future ahead with your academic qualifications and few working experience.

With what you have (academic qualification and few working experience) you should not accept anything less than 500k a month. Let me say if I were in your shoes, I will not accept less than 500k a month in Nigeria.

I will use myself as example, I have just my BEng from Nigerian University and MSc in the UK. Before the end of my MSc, I was already getting invitations for interview not even aptitude test in the UK and Nigeria but I could not attend the ones in Nigeria because of my MSc studies. As at when I completed my MSc in August 2012, I had virtually or maybe 1.5 years of professional working experience in my field gathered from 6 months industrial training and some few casual job. Then I started applying for jobs and I was getting invitations for interviews. The only test I wrote was that of Shell, Total, Halliburton and 2 others.

All you need to do is search for jobs, I sent at least 5 CVs including unsolicited ones daily when I was seriously job hunting. Even now that I am working, I still get invitations for some jobs I apply for.

Patience is a virtue.

Modified:

When I look at some job portals like rigzone and others, I see a lot of job vacancies requiring 1-4 years of experience being advertised in US and other European countries including the Middle East. You can apply for them. If not for the fact that I don't have working permits in most of these countries, I strongly believe I would have gotten a job outside the shores of Nigeria. Even at that, I still apply because some companies do sponsor.

400K is barely $1.7K per month
That's peanut for someone with relevant engineering degrees in the oil and gas industry

An offer he can't refuse should be in the region of 1M+ per month

My guy, you ve made it here in the usa and you ve struggled to be here up till now, and you ve also mentioned nigerian economy and iran oil because the worst hasnt even started as you noted. Have you thought about the advantages of working for companies in usa, the pensions, the retirement packages that are guaranteed, hear me guaranteed. As an engineer you can triple the amount that you mentioned and you can invest in nigeria from usa, ask a lot of people who has investments in nigeria how they did it. If i were in your position, am already thinking about what my future will hold if i finally retire, usa has a solid future, nigerian is still struggling to curb corruption and pensions, retiirement packages are not guaranteed. If you finally complete your engineering and and economy improves in nigeria then you have the opportunity to use your foreign expertise and knowledge believe me if you want to return to nigeria , you will definitely get a job that you are looking for . that is if the economy improves, but with the condition of things right now, i will not even think about making that move.

As an engineer you are making the rest of us look weak with this your indecision regarding this issue. Not a rocket science to know that the offer is nothing to write home about.

My token on your decision is very simple. You have lived in alot of countries which shows you know what is good and bad about where you have lived.Nigeria is non comparable to UK,US,Canada etc in terms of living with dignity, what i mean about this is simple, good infastructural facilities, quality education for your kids, security and safety of lives and properties just to mention a few.I know what it is to live abroad because i am in the party, several times i tried to relocate but our people's mentality, corruption, harrassment, fear and insecurity always make me to return to where i feel comfortable. I will advise you stay in the US to complete your programe and complete your green card processing this will give you alot of options and will not reduce you to who know man method of making a living for your self throughout your lifetime.
Sorry to conclude with this piece of information,Nigeira as a country will struggle alot in the coming years, why is becaiuse, alot of over dependent on oil will not help us,Iran coming back, saudi is increasing their daily pump out,the whites has got solution to fuel as source of power, electric cars are coming in,solar impulse-jet/plane is coming on,are we going to drink our oil?the debt in trillion of our foreign reserve, economic instability, population explosion without no proper plan for the unborn, food shortage and health care deterioration.I have been crying out on why our economy will suffer but the people at the helms of affairs are not helping the course of the common man.
My advise is an open ticket, which gives you the right to either yes or no but i will advise to put a stop to relocation at least for now to complete what you are almost sure of adding to your list of achievements,Job prospects will always come up in Nigeria, don't you think you can even get a better job than this present offered job?i think my response is as good as yours, you can and will get other better job opportunities.Best of luck.
