Do nigerians really benefit from these foreign oil companies operating in Nigeria? I don't think so.

I tire for am. Why is that those who didn't have the opportunity to have a master's degree always try to say trash.

Very sad sad especially for older employees who are above 45. Finding another job may be hard because of age. Meanwhile some are at the Peak of their lives, their kids at University sad sad

They're trying to reduce cost as a result of the dwindling oil prices. At this point your degree and level of experience also matters. Those mainly affected by this mainly affected by this are those who used back door entry into Shell and those who are long overdue for retirement. I'm a Shell staff and I was not affected by the sack. I'm a Master's degree holder from University of Saskatchewan and those of us with foreign degrees are given preferential treatment from Shell and other oil companies in Nigeria. So some of you here on nairaland should talking trash and peddling mumbo jumbo about those of us with a Master's degree. I hate inferiority complex.

dont mind them jare.

people be screaming 'iran' 'iran'.

what they fail to realise is that the sanctions against Iran are yet to be lifted and companies are still prohibited from dealing with iranian entities.

besides, with the pressure from Isreal, the US congress might not approve Obama's move at lifting the sanctions against Iran.

that said, Obama has the most useless foreign policies ever !!!!!

Yes. I believe fall in oil prices is a temporal occurance and in no sooner time the prices will still rise.

I know that bro. Contract staffs were also affected heavily but it's not the way most people see it. They're adequately compensated before their contract is terminated. I entered Shell through my pops influence. I did my Masters degree in Canada as soon I finished my service and by the special grace of God pops used his influence there to bring me in. He still had like 9years there before he retires. I had a job offer in Canada in an oil company too bit I decided to come back home.

Thank you. Sensational reporting at its best. It is not specific to Shell Nigeria.
Also, majority of the cuts have been done already (North Sea, divestments etc) rather than planned.

At this point your masters and degrees can't save you but your exprience and hardwork hmm
even with your xperience sef, it might stil be difficult cos companies like shell trains u on a specific career path that makes it hard 4 u 2 get employed in any other sector apart from oil n gas, especially their engrg guys. Imagine having a career as a Rigless Intervention Engr, or Riser Engr, with such career path, ur services are limited jst 2 d oil n gas sector

The problem is not for the oil and gas industry only but Nigeria as a whole.

Unfortunately Buhari has set no direction for the economy and the delays so far has injected higher uncertainty in the business environment.

Expect service companies to shed more staff cos there is nothing to service.

The question is what is the government-s direction?

Not suprised at all.
My cousin in the UK who also worked for an oil and gas company lost her job due to downsizing 2 months back. But at least they paid her 6 months full salary as she was leaving.
