MacJC:
To PLAYERS ON TRANSFER TRIALS:
THE BIGGER PICTURE.
Pls in d bid 2 sign 4 clubs let's take a look at the BIGGER PICTURE!
IMOO, what matters most is d FLEXIBILITY of d work.
CASE 1:
Club "A" wants 2 sign u for, let's say 100k with d following conditions:

(i) closing time = 6pm, so in essence, ALL ur fruitful part of d day had been sapped by d school.

(ii) private lessons is PROHIBITED, even if d student's parent made d move.

(iii) whether u have lectures or not, u must not leave d school UNTIL closing time+other "big schools" protocols.

(iv) u are given a marketing target 2 bring students 4 d school, like someone mentioned on this thread about NewHall Int sch, lekki.

(v) u practically travel 2 work everyday eg working in lekki but living in sango, spending at least 1k on transport(=20k per month, or 25k-with Saturdays) leaving u with net pay of 75-80k)

(vi) u are practically SPENT due 2 day2day school work+traffic hold-up (Some spend as much as 3hrs on d road) by d time u get home by 9pm, which time u want take do private lessons? Would u even have d strength?

(vii} u even go to school (school lessons) on Saturdays COMPULSORILY. Which time u want take develop/upgrade urself (eg pgd's certifications etc). Remember, ds no be govt work o, so (in most cases) no pension!

(viii) they feel they "own" u/ are doing u a favor because they are paying u "heavilly"(sic) irrespective of ur competency/handwork.

CASE 2:
Club "B" signs u for 40-50k and:

(i) closing time is 3-4 pm, which means u still have at least 2 "light" hrs 2 do ur own runz (eg home Tutor, vocational studies, certificate upgrade etc). Moreover, NO COMPULSORY SATURDAY LESSONS.

(ii) private teaching is allowed in as much u do it during break/after school hrs, that means more cash-flow.

(iii) flexibility in quickly touching 1/2 places outside during ur free periods.

(iv) ur school is within ur hood, so no transport fare "hole". "Stress of traveling " is also eliminated.

(v) due to (i} and {iv} above, u have EXTRA ENERGY 2 do ur runz. If u can get 5 private teaching locations @ 10k/location, that gives 50k. Add that to ur 40-50k, that gives u 90k minimum.

(vi) since ur SATURDAYS ARE YOURS (and not d school's) , u can upgrade urself certificate-wise, have more time on ur laps 4 private home teaching, hence more income!

CONCLUSION: When u look @ it finely, u'll see dt what u lose @ d end of d day in signing 4 dt "big" club may be MORE than d gain.

So in putting Pen 2 paper, ie b4 u make dt "mega-deal" move, ensure u don't fix ur gaze on the GROSS PAY. Instead, put all other factors into consideration, ie, LOOK AT THE NET PAY!

Naso my brother just that it's for the duration of the holidays till the kids go back to Abj. But I've already made some arrangements with some tutorial centres when JAMB lessons start in October. I'll be teaching 3 subjects and due to my area, it's 500 per period. If I can tàke a cumulative of like 6 periods in those centres, na still something. No time to dull around and seat at home for a work that's not coming. I prefer it to school job, no lesson notes, no regimented schedule, no principal or proprietor ordering u around. Enter class, teach, collect your Figo and bolt.

i like this your style ooo. Im thinking of leaving where i am currently by december. But i have always been afraid of staying idle after then incase i dont get anything by then cos i have never been idle since graduation. Thanks bro; this came at the right time!

I have been an ardent reader of this thread. This thread has been inspiring and I have learnt a lot of things in this teaching line. I am an animal scientist by profession, i'm just new into this field; just decided to take up teaching, when no job was coming forth. Well, i'm just a year into teaching. It has been an interesting one with a lot of challenges. I started in a school in which I did not get paid for 3months and I left to another one and got a pay of 25k but with too much than I can chew. Imagine doing 39 periods in a week. I just endured to the end of the session. Now I am no more there, i've been submitting my cv around. Still hoping that I get called for a better pay and working Condition. There are just very few schools in this axis (ikotun-idimu)that can pay above 25k, but I believe in the very best God has for me.

Beautiful sunday to everyone in tha house.
I actually need a little clarification as to some concepts bothering me as far as teaching is concerned.
1. What is the difference between a school with british based curriculum and nigerian curriculum? (once taught in a school that claimed to be a british based curriculum but saw no difference as compared with other regular schools around)
2. The folkowing attachments to school names such as '"comprehensive college, high school, int'l sch, etc." Do they have any relevance as to how the school operates or its just a figure head title?
3. The general advice on this thread is to search for schools around one's localty, don't you think moving out of one's comfort zone might actually propel huge success?
4. For an individual with degree in education, which should be the next, masters in edu or professional exams.
I appreciate your opinion...always ready to learn till the last breath.

@Macjc.

It's true ooo.

A friend of mine said sometimes he will miss his two lessons because of unproductive meeting here and there. And once you miss a day, it will be difficult for you to make up for that day because the child is always occupy with other teachers.

When I was at Lekki, once there is meeting teachers will begin to frown their faces like this people don start with their useless meeting.

This issue of everyday meeting is mostly done on the island whether big school or not.

Some thing I like about teaching in all these big schools is connection. My brother in law works in Lekki and had the opportunity to teach Oduah's children [former minister of aviation]. His pay was 100k and above, depending on how he came in a month.
Though it was stressful because the traffic from Lekki to VGC was something else. But he made his dou, rented a flat, got married , bought a car in less than 2 years in teaching in Lekki.

1. There is no difference the only difference I see is that the former prepares students for education outside Nigeria or provide educationspecifically tailored to enable students "enroll" for foreign educational institutions seamlessly, while the later prepares you for O'level and possibly acquiring knowledge not relevant to the immediate economic and cultural environment;
2. As for International schools, yes, but not all because there is AISIEN a body or association of international schools with foreign affiliatiom or partnership. Many schools that bears international, there nothing international about (pay wise, laboratory wise and working conditions) them not the mention they are not members of AISIEN. Some high schools are members of AISIEN but many are 'Kereje'. Comprehensive, high, low are just figure head title.
3. For someome without any teaching experience, starting around is the best, then after a year you can move out because you have gathered experience. Yours truly did same.
MAcjc, made some analysis, which in my own opinion is correct especially if you want to further your studies, acquire certifications. Also schools around is good for pregnant and nursing mothers but not good for singles. Yes, leaving your comfort zone is good, but you have to consider many factors such as transportation especially in Lagos and rent. Am guessing, you not in the labour market yet.
4. It all depends on you, especially if your pocket can carry it. Professional certification is what most of this grade A schools like, however, some of "us"only have a first degree and have taught in grade A schools. In my own opinion, certifications in this profession are as follows TRCN, CIE, IELT and IGCSE. TRCN is quite good for educationists while others are gotten if the schools is certified by British council to undertake such programmes.
