Whatt happened to Kenya. I had thought that his first African trip would be to his fatherland. How wrong.

He is unfair to his Kenya (ancestral association) and Nigeria (Her role in stabilizing Siera Leone and Liberia), the two leading Anglo-phone countries in Africa. The outrage in both countries is warranted. For some time Ghana has irreparably assumed the status of IMF and World banks experimental specimen with very little to show for it economically. Take a trip to Tamale and Paga and you will realize that Ghana exists as two countries: the effectively marginalized north and the prosperous south, hardly the exemplar of good political economy.

Obama should have visited Kenya his ancestral land before any other African country. His visit to Ghana is right, Obama to visit Nigeria? to see who? the beneficiary of a rigged election, Untill Nigeria gets her acts together, we will be shunned by western democracies
Re: Obama To Visit Ghana by toshmann(m): 3:07pm On May 28, 2009
we are not only being shunned by western democracies, we are also being shunned by some of our best brains who are forced to live outside the country.

It a good thing that at least one of African country is leaving up to the expectation, well since the Goliath of Africa has now being sling, then let the little David of Africa shine.Nigerians ! only God will help us!.

Why are we so critical of our country. Yes there are faults that can be corrected, but god! Nigeria is still Africa's second largest and most successful economy. Politically, Nigeria has contributed to peace maintenance that any other country I know of in Africa. Obama is not going to Ghana to spit Nigeria. What Nigeria has achieved in spite of her short comings are independent of Obama. I recently read somewhere that Nigeria remains the number one destination of foreign investors. Let us be proud of this and stop whining about another president's itinerary.

The U.S.Government mentioned four qualities that informed their choice of country, namely, democratization, development, good governance and social inclusion. These are qualities Nigeria lacks, resulting in a plethora of domestic problems, which have made her unattractive and unsafe for citizens, manufacturers, and other business investors. Denials or rebranding gimmicks will not make Nigeria reclaim her “giant” status. Only marked improvements in safety and security, in crime reduction, and in the delivery of political goods, schools, hospitals, roads, electricity, etc, can achieve this objective.

I dont see what the big deal is if Obama decides to visit Ghana before Nigeria?

Has no American president ever visited Nigeria before or why are people panicking?

The Queen, Clinton, George Bush and many others have all been to Naija, with the country's warts and all. Obama just started work for goodness sake.

did anyone watch Obama's speech in the morning btw.

He said he's starting a cyber watchdog to monitor the internet.

Thought they already do that.

You are right. My emphasis is on several points: Nigeria is not as bad as some posts suggest. How else do you explain CNN's focus on the large swathe of returnees who, face with the economic down turn in the west see hope in Nigeria. Two, Obama's reasons fo tfor choice of itinerary and NigeNigeria'sgress (albeit a slow and painful one) should not be seen as mutually conflicting. the only catch, and a catch it is, is the denial of any request from president "go slow" that he honors Nigeria with a visit. Listen folks Nigeria remains the giant that it is with or without patronage. How about that?

why is Obama suddenly too holy pass?

The badmouthing diasporans factor maybe?

On vacation? Yes.

But in his capacity as President of the United States, he cannot afford to let ancestral sentiments determine his decisions.

Remember he is not a Nigerian. grin tongue
