This is a good idea!! Non-igbos living and studying in igboland should learn igbo language from nursery to secondary school level.

@Chiogo
You can speak igbo language because you learned at home but you can't write or read igbo language embarassed
Don't you think that is enough reason to make the language compulsory in igboland.

I could remember the days of Grace Ubesie and her brother Tony!! Their Igbo novels were simply fantastic and i read their books, so did my friends. Igbo novels anyone?  No way because i want my kids to be queen queen oyoyo

Igbo Language must be compulsory in Igbo states. If you don't like it stay away from Igboland.

I am living in Spain and i must learn and pass Catalan to gain addmission into the Balearic University of Mallorca
Note: Not castellan language which is the national Language in spain and of which i am very fluent with. If i want to learn in castellan language i must have to move out from my base of over 10 years and start from scratch again or stick to mallorca and learn their Catalan language which is used 50/50 with the Spanish national lingo in academic activities. From secondary school down is strictly Catalan. Mallorcan signs and posts are in catalan

Reason, they are saving their language and culture.

The problem with Anambra state is that her intelligentisia have migrated en-masse to the west in a self imposed exile expeditionary rendition with no intent of  going back to the home state. The result of this brain drain is the half baked English speaking law makers in the house of assembly. To this law makers they are breaking new grounds but it is clear that the only ground that is broken is creating a breeding ground for social miscreants and hoodlums who are neither Igbo nor English speaking west africans. What I have noticed in this forum is that on one hand her intelligentisa want to hold on to the illusion that by revitalising her dying language they will somehow in their sub conscious re-connect with the home country, but the fact has to be told it is a mirage in their head and if care is not taking will result in such individuals sectioned under the mental act.

KnowAll:

If you make Igbo language an important language by way of the millions of Igbo people speaking it, English speakers will instead learn that language. For example, can you explain to me why English-speaking job applicants have an edge pver their competitors when they can speak Finnish (spoken by around 6 million), Greek (spoken by around 15 million), Czech (around 12 million), Swedish (9 million) and Swahilli (5 million native) talk less of Igbo which is spoken by over 25 million people.

Where these other languages are spoken Finnish (spoken by around 6 million), Greek (spoken by around 15 million), Czech (around 12 million), Swedish (9 million) are developed economies. You cannot compare that with the underdeveloped agrarian based economy that the 25 million Igbos live. About 20 million of this population are semi-illiterates of what significance would such a people be to any western economy. By de-emphasising the importance of the English language in Anambra state, Anambra state will not only slip further into the abyss of illetricacy in any modern european language but will be viewed by even neighbouring Igbo state as backwater of backwardness.

How can you ask if the Igbo language or any other language for that matter in 'Nigeria' is of use to westerners when Nigeria is one of the biggest oil producing countries in the world? I'm thinking long term, your thinking of the pit latrine Nigeria is today. The fact is that I'm not talking about others learning the language here, thats not the main point, the main point is that we do not need the English language. I think that your not thinking that one day our country could be better and there would be no more need for the mass exodus that is happening in Nigeria. There is absolutely no way that Igbo people can become illiterate in English by way of speaking Igbo out of school, in the playground or in anyother casual situation when there are English language and literature lessons in school. I talk less of those that speak basic English without even passing Primary 6 in Igboland.

What do we really need English for when other countries speak their own languages (which were the examples I gave) and are still able to compete on the world stage?

Example one: how many Igbo grandparents are there that cannot speak perfect English, but at the same time can't speak spotless, English-less Igbo? I know mine can.

@KnowAll your pretensious use of certain words to appear as if you are intelligent is not necessary. Arise from your inferiority complex and stop thinking that everything none English or white is bad. Japanese is only spoken by people in Japan and they have survived. According to you the inability to fully speak English or Igbo makes one a hoodlum. Please stop making yourself look more ridiculous, its not cute!

How do you know? I mean I'm not an expert like those who write igbo novels but I'm fair at writing igbo, I can read it too so long as the words aren't too ancient. I've taken french for up to 4 years but I can only make simple sentences, that doesn't mean I can speak french fluently. I'm sure this bill thing is a good idea but it shouldn't be mandatory. people are always going to do what they want.

It is very surprising(literally) how anything and everything IGBO generates so much attention and discussion; and sends chivers and thrills into the bone and blood of other Nigerians. This is a sign of profound importance conferred to NDIGBO and the IGBO culture. Boy, I love being an IGBOMAN smiley
Guys, Leave the great state of Anambra people alone. Let them teach their kids their mother tongue and whatever they see fit, and lets please move-on from this topic/conversation.

In fact the Japanese are one of the laziest races when it comes to arts they can hardly speak any other language, but their deficiency is not a handicap as they excel beyond expectation in the sciences. But with the Igbos you will have a situation where you lack both the skill in speaking English properly nor speaking Igbo properly coupled with the fact you already live in an under developed agrarian society, your youths would be idle and we all know an idle mind is the devil’s workshop hence my reference to Hoodlums in my initial article.

In this world we live there are the sciences and there are the arts. You cannot be the masters of both you are either a master in science – Brain surgeons, Astronauts, Electrical and Electro Magnetic Engineering or a masters in arts, here we can identify with the ingenuity of Picasso, the mastery of the English language by someone whose mother tongue is not English, Wole Soyinka comes to mind, this are achievements 98% of the human race cannot accomplish nor fulfil. The fact that the Russians sent someone to orbit round the earth is a feat worthy of praise, neither does this singular scientific adventure diminishes the great work and recognition that a non native speaker of a language has in mastery a language which is not his or her mother tongue. The two are at par one is not a greater feat than the other they are just different discipline.

Do you think if the Japanese adopted English language like Nigeria did, they would be technological giant like they are today? How would you know that the Japanese are weak in learning foreign languages when they have never in their history subjected themselves to the perpetual state of myrmidon the African nations has subjected themselves borne out of plethora level of inferiority complex and simultaneously, a profuse level of low self expectation. They 've never had an immediate need to learn foreign languages, so you can not quantify or measure their ability to learn foreign languages, common sense would have told you that, but apparently it has not. Your inferior cognitive ability does makes me want to flout your post but I would give you a chance once more. By the way developed societies don't fall from heaven, but societies are developed due to positive choices and decisions  made by people from such societies.

10 million Wole Soyinkas are inconsequential to the technological development of a state, they would only be remembered as individuals with noble laureate in English literature and that is invariably where it ends. check out this thread: https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-61080.0.html I 've dealt with this language issue before, and is good they are now trying to implement some of my ideas.

Of course 10 million Soyinkas will not be appreciated in a backward backwater which your semi illiterate law makers are trying to create because arts and theatre which is held in high esteem and revered in most advance society will be seeing as irrelevant and inconsequential to a subsistence hungry people. There only focus will be how to and where to find the next meal. The Intelligentsia who are meant to guide this hungry and vulnerable people are feeding from the same white man’s hand and speaking the same white man’s language more than the natives. It is well documented that the Igbos in America have the highest Phd amongst all African tribes yet these same people want to deny the opportunities to their country folks, It will appear that some of your people take pride in seeing their kith and kin wallow in abject poverty I wonder whether it brings some sort of joy or maybe they get there kicks from what most people will consider as a selfish and inconsiderate behaviour.
