How Can I Have Victory In Overcoming Sin? by winner01(m): 12:45pm On Nov 03, 2015
Christians should all have overcoming sin as one of our goals. Although we will never be perfectly victorious over sin in this life (1 John 1:cool, we must recognize that overcoming sin is part of the battle which is the Christian life. God has not left us to battle sin on our own, however. He has given us clear instructions and several resources to aid in the struggle.

1. The first resource, and the most important, is the presence of the Holy Spirit in our hearts, without whom victory over sin is impossible. Not only must we have the presence of the Spirit, but we must also be "filled" with the Spirit in order to overcome sin (Ephesians 5:18-21). We should be so completely yielded to the Holy Spirit that He can possess us fully and, in that sense, fill us. Romans 8:9 and Ephesians 1:13-14 state that He dwells within every believer, but He can be grieved (Ephesians 4:30), and His activity within us can be quenched (1 Thessalonians 5:19). When we allow this to happen, we do not experience the fullness of the Spirit's working and His power in and through us. Therefore, the presence and the filling of the Holy Spirit are essential to overcoming sin.

2. Another resource God has given to us to overcome sin and live for Him is the Word of God, which is sufficient to equip us for every good work and to make us "complete" (2 Timothy 3:16-17). If it is able to make us complete, that would include the power to have victory over sin. Hebrews 4:12 tells us that the Word of God is living and powerful, able to penetrate straight to our hearts to root out and overcome the deepest sins of heart and attitude. Psalm 119:9 (NIV) refers to the power of the Word: "How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word." Joshua 1:8further exhorts "This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success."

The Bible will help us to overcome sin, but not if it sits on the shelf until Sunday. We are to memorize it, meditate on it, or apply it to our lives. When it comes to the Word of God, we can't simply take in just enough to keep us alive spiritually. We must ingest enough of it to be healthy, thriving Christians, which involves feeding on it and meditating on its truths enough to derive its spiritual nutrition. The Bible is an essential and major part of the armor that God gives us to fight our spiritual battles (Ephesians 6:12-18). Without it, we have no hope of overcoming sin.

3. Prayer is the third crucial resource in our battle against sin. If Jesus had to pray diligently to prepare for the ordeal He was about to suffer, how much more do we who are weak and sinful have to rely on prayer to overcome temptation? In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus exhorted the disciples to "Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation" (Matthew 26:41). When they failed to heed His warning, they fell into the sin of fear and unbelief (Mark 14:50). God has given us wonderful promises concerning prayer (Matthew 7:7-11; Luke 18:1-8; John 6:23-27; 1 John 5:14-15), and Paul includes prayer in his passage on preparing for spiritual battle (Ephesians 6:18). Prayer acknowledges that we recognize our own limitations and God's inexhaustible power and it allows us to tap into that power as we "approach God's throne of grace with confidence" (Hebrews 4:16 NIV) with our petitions and supplications.

4. A fourth resource in our war to conquer sin is the fellowship of other believers, particularly in the local church. Overcoming sin with the help and encouragement of others in love and good works (Hebrews 10:24) is much easier than going at it alone. James tells us to confess our faults to one another (James 5:16) and pray for one another because just as iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another (Proverbs 27:17). There is strength and comfort to be found among a body of believers whose hearts are inclined toward God and one another (Ecclesiastes 4:11-12).
Accountability partners who can come alongside a struggling brother and render help in overcoming stubborn sins is another resource provided by the local church. Temptation is part of the Christian life (1 Corinthians 10:13), but God has promised not to test us beyond our ability to bear it and having an accountability partner or an accountability group can help us to overcome even the most stubborn of sins.

Sometimes victory over sin comes quickly; other times, victory comes more slowly. God has not left us helpless in our battle against sin. He has promised that as we make use of His resources, He will progressively bring about change in our lives. We can persevere in our efforts to overcome sin because we know that "The LORD is trustworthy in all he promises and faithful in all he does" (Psalm 145:13b NIV).

God bless You.

Agreed with the OP but permit me to add, the "doctrine of sin" is in two forms namely,

1. Sin as in nature, which is the sin nature

2. Sin as in a practice or act which is what we do wrong.

The sin nature, Christ already dealt with. The residues of the sin nature which is our flesh we still carry is a continuous strife until we leave this corruptible body for the incorruptible. I remember a saying when I was a little boy growing that says, when sin (practice\wrong acts) is pushing you, don't push yourself towards it. With reference to God and His word, guard yourself away from sin. That's the practical in the OP!

If the above comment is not proof of torment and a disturbed man, then i dont know what isundecided.
The article disturbes him to an extent that he just has to do all he can to fight it.
Its like the mention of God or christianity torments them and they just have to fight back.
They never stop creating odd threads and comments on christianity and God even though they claim not to believe these. Its obvious they cant control their obsession.

For God or Against God, Evidently there is no mid-seat. The atheists keep proving this right. The devil has a way of using people, its so real you dont realise youre actually possessed.

Except of course one can explain why atheists take a "non-existent" God and religion so seriously which aint possible.

We need to include these guys in our prayers cos as normal as they might sound, many of them are going through so much hurt, pain, trauma and dont know how to get away from it. Many question God wrongly because they think He shouldnt permit evil on them.
Their best try is to fight it off and vent all their frustrations on social media.
It will interest you to know that majority of them live as secret atheists in their domain. We need to understand that social media is probably the only platform where they will ever get to share their frustrations and hence the reason why they stay here day and night.

Lets just pray for them so that they are able to overcome whatever shackles the devil has thrown around their necks before it completely destroyes them and that they find mercy and grace in Christ.

Everything was made by God. It is practically impossible not to believe in God. Consciousness of a Creator is in-built, due to circumstances and experiences you can then choose to be For God or Against God.

Some of us claim to be for God,

None of us claim to be against God,

Atheists claim to be somewhere in the middle i.e neither for or against God cos they dont even believe.

But they continue to show us that there is no "middle". Atheists always claim not to believe in God or religion but they constantly create threads or posts comments against God and religion. This is clearly against God.

No wonder the bible does not recognize atheists(cos its impossible not to believe in God), it only recognizes God-haters.
The Bible keeps proving thats its not a product of human minds.

This is it. You have hit the nail on the head. This is why Christians have to be meek and gentle in handling these atheists because they are morally fragile and bruised all over. All they are doing is projecting the fact that they are hurting inside.

@bolded, for the very few sincere ones, that is where objectivity is lost and the aftermath of demonic posession.

Fellowship with believers and reading the Word matters a lot. Even if it's just 10 mins you spend on the Bible it counts else one may fall. Also being with believers encourages one in the faith and helps in other areas e.g. finance that stil affect the faith. Even atheists recognize the importance of community to many believers.

People are beginning to open up about atheism this has been slowly gaining ground over the past few years, I'm quite surprised atheists arent taking advantage of it. It will be interesting to see an atheist with the daring of Tai Solarin who was unafraid of stating his atheism and was still well-respected. That said, atheism is a challenge that can be overcome. Jesus argued with the Sadduccees who didn't believe in an afterlife like atheists. Apostle Paul in Acts 17:18 encountered the Stoics and especially the Epicureans who were atheists. If they came out unscathed so can anyone else.

I'd like to ask how to escape a sin one is addicted to like say gluttony.

If they came out unscathed so can anyone else.

I'd like to ask how to escape a sin one is addicted to like say gluttony.

The first step to freedom from sin is to come to a realisation of that sin. In the case of gluttony, to recognize that this sin can be harmful to your body and has the power to even truncate your christian Journey. Sin is powerful and we must realise this. However as children of God, we must realise that we have the ultimate power, but must be determined to excersise it to attain dominion over sin.
Apostle paul demonstrates this determination here;
All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any. 1 cor 6:12

Another interpretation for "under the power" is "slavery". We cant be under the power of sin, we cant be slaves to sin. Sin cant be our master.
Paul realises that Jesus Christ is his only master and cant have another master.

With the help of God, you must keep your body, and bring it into subjection 1 cor 9:27.
You might need to engage in fasting and prayer more often at least till you have a conviction. This will help you to feed the spirit to an extent that it can overthrow the flesh.
Most times we feed the flesh so often and expect it not to subdue the spirit. This is not possible. The well fed man will definately overthrow the starved man. Sooner than later, the physical hunger will loose its power and its hold over you. This is one of the implications of the biblical principle of fasting.
And as stated earlier, with the help of the Holy spirit, the word of God, prayer, fellowship with other believers, you will surely overcome.
God bless you.
