Imagine what a passenger was given as food/snack while travelling with Aero Airline from Lagos-Port Harcourt after paying about N22k as flight ticket. Imagine serving each passenger one small pack of happy hour juice, 50 naira biscuit, two small pieces of cookies worth 100 naira and 10 naira flash sweet. When it comes to treating passengers well, Nigeria still has a long way to go...
some years ago, this same package was sold for about N300 and wasn't free. How can this be a front page news. From the ticket fare the government takes more than 60% of the total fare

grin I remembered in 2007 on my flight (SAS airline) to Athens from Copenhagen(over 3hrs)we had to pay for food ,no snacks or water was offered.I appreciated Nigeria that day because i know Lagos to Abuja then you will get cake or sausage roll, sweets, juice, water .

I once read about the events that transpired at an airline conference. One CEO who was supposed to speak came up with a cup of tea to the podium where he was to speak and he said "that the profit margin in the airline industry is about the cost of a cup of coffee and maybe biscuits"

Hard to believe but this is the truth. Why do we think most airlines are folding up? Some of us may have heard about low cost airline where they dont serve you meals, in some others you actually have to buy the food from the hostess if you want it.

Others do not carry luggage. If you want to you pay for it. So dont really blame them, we need to understand why they are doing what they are doing.

I have worked in the Nigerian aviation industry so I'm talking from an operational point of view. South Africans have their world view carved out of their economic state, same with Nigeria cant compare. Even in almighty usa u still have flights you buy your meals.

These airlines are barely surviving. There's a saying that the easiest way to become a millionaire in aviation is to start by being a billionaire. Kapish?

Guy, you are the one that needs to overhaul his mentality. Why do a lot of Nigerians, settle for mediocrity?

This is a 1-hour flight for which =N=22,000 has been paid as flight ticket. Is it too much to ask, for 5% - 10% of the cost of the flight ticket to be spent on good quality food for the passengers? angry

Afterall, =N=650 to =N=750 will get you a well-packaged meal of spaghetti, beef & 1 bottle of Pepsi from Tantalisers; =N=750 only will get you well-packaged small chops and water from a good hygienic catering outfit etc. undecided If you look at Mr. Biggs, Sweet Sensation and Leventis foods, you can still put together a decent meal or snack box for well under =N=1,000 naira. All this is not up to 10% of the cost of the ticket.

Why don't our airlines believe in giving value for money, for goodness sake? shocked

An hour flight u need food! Dis is crazy, do u know what too much of food before you get on board an aircraft can do to u? Do you know the altitude the aircraft flies? Do you know how gravity and other forces will react in your stomach at high altitude?

Like seriously. No food should be served. I dnt know the quality of the snacks that was served. But for safety reason, i think it's d best choice.

Even naija to UK 9hrs straight flight don't serve food, They serve snacks all through. Or maybe tell me what they serve??

Do u even know the cost of aviation fuel and maintenance that u r complaining of the price of the ticket.

Air transport is nt for the poor and hungry ones.

I hv uncountable reasons

Guy, check my posts. I have never said that all airlines in the US offer free food. I agree that on some flights the passengers buy their food on US based flights. But there are also other flights in the US where meals and good snacks are served on board. My take is that why can't Nigeria copy good things and offer value for money, on our flights? So if the airlines are barely surviving in Nigeria, is it because of the food they serve that is making it difficult for them to survive? By taking food out of the equation, would it improve their chances of survival?

Please Nigerian airlines suffer from bad management, fraud and theft, pure and simple. You need to see the poor method of crowd control at their counters in the airports, to understand their lapses.

I know how many times I have arrived at the airport to board a local flight, only to be told the seats were full. In some cases after paying an extra premium on top of the ticket, you get into the plane only to discover the seats are half-empty! shocked So what was the need for peddling false information to passengers who could have bought tickets at the agreed fare, in the first place?? angry

Guy, stop typing before you faint on top the airlines matter, o! Yes, what is wrong with serving food, or good quality snacks on board an hour's flight?? Is it a crime? As a passenger, you are going to be sitting on one spot for over an hour, and don't forget that the passenger may have spent time longer than an hour in traffic to get to the airport, or may even have been delayed by the airline before getting on board. undecided

So what is wrong if the airline decides to offer food or good quality snacks? If food cannot settle in your own stomach during an hour's flight speak for yourself, o! Maybe your internal digestive system needs a makeover... sad

Naija to UK flight is 6.5 hours. Now on which airline from Lagos to UK do they serve only snacks, please? Is it all airlines or just one? Tell me so I can avoid that airline. I have flown different airlines to the UK where I have been served food, o! Nobody is asking for a 3-course meal or a mama-put kind of plate on board these flights, o! Take note that airline food has always been served in small packs, and it does not take more than 4 or 5 spoons to finish it. If you fly London-New York which is similar in distance on any of these foreign airlines, you will see that the service we are being given on the Lagos - London route is close to rubbish, and yet our people are happy with it. undecided

Individuals like you also help them to continue the standards of poor service despite the fact that we have paid for the trip with our hard-earned money, and we should be entitled to get value for money at every stage.

That is the standard of comparison that is being used here. Nobody is asking for buffet or gourmet meals or the 'orishrishi' served in our local bukas to be given to them by the airlines...

So KLM and Swiss that have recorded losses over the past few years and embarked on cost-cutting measures to stay afloat, is your example? Why not use Emirates, Etihad, Qatar, Turkish Airways or any other airlines that are profitable? mtcheew. One journalist recently shared his experience on an evening flight from New York to Oakland, on JetBlue where snacks were passed out on three separate occasions along with standard beverage service.

Even the KLM site you quoted stated the type of things they serve on board:

Economy Class Europe
As always, we offer a broad selection of hot and cold drinks, including fruit juice, soft drinks, wine, beer, coffee and tea on our flights.

Depending on the length of the flight and departure time, we serve either a snack or a fresh Delicious sandwich.

On flights of up to 120 minutes departing before 9 am, we serve a set of tasty sandwiches with different fillings. On flights departing after 9 am, you can choose between a sweet and a savoury snack.
On flights between 120 and 170 minutes we serve a set of sandwiches.
On flights lasting longer than 170 minutes we offer a hot snack or a hot meal and sweet pastry.

We vary our snack and sandwich selection on a regular basis. http://www.klm.com/travel/no_en/prepare_for_travel/on_board/dining_on_board/dining_in_economy_class.htm

On their international flights, they serve full meals.
Economy Class intercontinental
On all KLM intercontinental flights, we welcome you on board with a beverage of choice. Before every meal you receive a nice hot towel for refreshment and an aperitif with nuts. You are then served an hors d'ouevre, your choice of one of our two Delicious hot meals and a dessert. With your meal you naturally get a fresh bread roll with butter and cheese. After dinner, we offer complimentary coffee, tea or a liqueur.

On shorter flights, we serve a fresh sandwich or other snack before landing. On longer flights, we serve a second meal. Depending on the time of day this will be breakfast, lunch or dinner. Between meals, we serve you snacks, ice cream or a sandwich. When you would like some more, you can ask the crew for a sweet or savoury snack.

Beverages
We serve hot and cold drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), including sustainable coffee and tea, soft drinks, fruit juice, beer and specially blended and award-winning wine, together with your meal. Throughout the entire flight, we offer something to drink once every hour.

A la carte menu
On most KLM intercontinental flights departing from Amsterdam, you have an even larger selection of hot meals to choose from when you order an à la carte meal at KLM.com before your flight. http://www.klm.com/travel/no_en/prepare_for_travel/on_board/dining_on_board/dining_in_economy_class.htm

And on Swiss flights, their passengers are given options:
Best quality in SWISS Economy

Depending on the length of your flight, we will serve you an aperitif, light snacks or a delicious multi-course meal made using the best Swiss products. All snacks, meals and beverages are included in your ticket price. https://www.swiss.com/ch/EN/fly/on-board/meals-on-board

Aero, Air Peace, Dana, all serve almost similar types of snacks (yes, snacks not food) for the short haul flights

The cost of the ticket doesn't mean you should be served Poundo and Okro soup with goat meat.
