Furniture I Bought From China Arrived by ChidoNwankwo: 11:59am On Jan 23, 2016
Hey, the furnitures I bought from China arrived finally. I waited for 20days for production, 40days to ship, and 15days for clearance at Apapa port. Thank God, 2.5 months after payment, I got my furniture from China factory. And it deserves bcs its beautiful and cost much less!
This is my third time to buy from China. First two times I bought computer and Ipad for my son. I paid online at Chinavasion.com and the goods arrived to my door about 55days.
This time I supposed to buy locally, my wife wants to buy from Lifemate or Bedmate, but one of my friend bought all his sofa, kitchen cabinet, wardrobe and toilet, bathtubs from Builder Union Group in China, and told me their quality is much better with a lower cost. So we later decided to give it a try.
Pls, I want to upload picture but don't know how to paste it here, so I make attachment of my kitchen cabinet and sofa from China. The sofa its original color is orange, they have it on their website, you can click the link if you want to have a look, http://www.builderunion.com/furniture/sofa/pure-leather-sofa-good-quality-durable-big-man-choice
But my own is white, as my wife like something unique. Do you think my white sofa matches my sitting room? And my kitchen I choose orange color, also from Builder Union, they give me design on extractor space and microwave space. My wife like it too much.
Anyhow, only one problem for me is that when I make order, I buy US dollars at 230, but when I pay balance I have to pay 270 naira for 1 USD!

Nice, looks perfect...how much did you spend in total for shipping and clearing, and what's your location.

Its nice, ur interior decors look spontaneous.
But may i ask. Like how much does the whole purchase to shipment and clearance cost for this set of furniture? I just want to know how cost effective importing it is as to local purchase

Nigerians, we are our own worst enemy.

Even during this austere times and with vast numbers of furniture makers in Nigeria you still choose to order something as mundane as household furniture?

Last time I checked USA is not in dire financial straits as Nigeria.

Until we start looking inwards then we can't get needed traction.

It's a crying shame that many of us pour foreign exchange into Nigeria while some empty it back out unnecessarily.

Nigeria problems can't be solved by just me and you,it has to come from dasuki o,

My 1k furnitures has no effect to dasuki pool of 2billion dollars bros, the way it is now Everyman to himself o.

You ask a Nigerian carpenter to do work of 50 naira.instead of saying its 50 naira sir,he will start by saying its 5thousand sir,he forgot that not everyone likes to haggle,I'll just say ok,let me think about it and get back to u later.

Nigerians handymen are shooting themselves on the foot.

I can never solve Nigerias issue with the likes of Dasukis.

What I can solve though is the immediate need of local merchants and suppliers to earn a decent living without competing with China. Street by street, city by city, state by state.

On the issue of local pricing, yes I agree that it's an epidemic.

What I tell them is that they get once chance at giving me a quote (I will not negotiate) and that I will get other quotes and will decide to go with the best quote.

An Iron Bender quoted me almost N20,000 for a job that another one is now doing for N6,000

Our mentality of "if it's not imported, it's not good" needs to be eradicated. You buy lousy wood from China and it's better than the Mahogany wood from my granddather's farm. What a shame. There are good solid furnitures made in Nigeria but we prefer packaging.

Its so annoying how they do business over there, very unprofessional and I can tell you that many would get turned off using local services because of their inadequate pricing for services.

The other day someone recommended a Togolese tiler to me,I gave the chap a call, immediately, the man went straight to telling me it's 250naira per sqm,if it was a Nigerian they'll start by saying its 500 naira first.I hate that.

Am up for the support of local businesses, but they seriously need to change their ways.

Just take a look at people selling things here, they rarely post their prices, because they are constantly thinking on how to make you their next victim.I SMH.

Bros I fill your pain, I just came back from Naija last week. My experience started from the gas station, the gas attender showing interest in my car to buy. That's how the conversation started, meanwhile my interest was to just purchase gas. Along the line, I gave him 3,000 naira to pump me gas. He preloaded the pump for 960 and then sold me 2,040 worth of gas for 3,000 naira. As you can see he shortchanged me 1,000 right there. The conversation didn't distract me, at the end of the day. I made sure the manager was aware of what they where doing. Can you believe when I was trying to correct this, people started shouting Oga you're wasting our time. Can you imagine if this guy succeeded in doing that to 25 people a day, that is 25,000 he will make a day. In situation of such when do we start to fix things, if most people think alike. If one gives this guys job, they like to charge 4X above the cost. Sometimes the owner may just feel like walking away, because most of us from the west believe we can get more value for our money from somewhere else, this is why most of these projects are being abandoned.

My brother you don't have to solve Nigeria's problem nor is anyone asking you to. Just start by solving the problems in your small corner. Furniture? China? ...even with better and competitively priced alternatives? C'mon...

It's unfortunate. Really unfortunate. There are many talented and capable furniture makers in Nigeria eagerly hustling for opportunity.

We need to have pride in our talent, and our talent needs to have pride in their work.

Nigerian craftsmen have very terrible work ethics and is killing them. I will have to agree with the poster that said most Nigerian businesses posting for sale here hardly post prices because there looking to catch someone mugu. Most of us living abroad are look for straight forward answers and if a seller in China can do that why insult those who buy foreign abeg?

Our craftsmen overcharge and under deliver, don't really blame the guy for going to China.

I asked about a 7 by 6 bedframe, the local artisan next door said foreign board material without side stool or dressing mirror is 120k while with Nigerian wood is 80k.

I just laughed and went my way, in house camping continua.

Poverty is rampant at home but I won't be swindled.

I get out of my car (safer anyways) during fill up and directly place my eyes on the pump operation during the process of fill up as if in a trance.

I mean I can't wait to get to furniture stage so I can get pieces made by local artisans.

It seems it's a travelled thing, those at home do not realize the opportunity they have at home.

Spot on.

Hopefully people will realize sooner than later that "Ile Lati Nko Eso Rode".

I had a local carpenter make me a bed frame and table toy specs. He explained the pricing increase due to the level of quality that I am expecting. As a hobbyist woodworker here in the USA I showed him some tips and techniques.

While I was there a customer that I met there placed order for the same thing I was showing him. I used the opportunity to now explain to him that people will pay for a quality product.

Yeah lazy people without an economist grasp will find it easier to order from a catalogue while not caring about the bigger picture of world economics.

This is why CBN has to make all the insane directives.

I heard that we even import toothpicks. I think I'll faint if I ever hear that we import Garri or Elubo from China grin

The finishing of our Nigerian made furniture is appalling. They are overpriced heavy wood too.

sorry for my late response. I traveled, just come back. The sofa total set with middle table I paid USD1300, transport USD600, Clearance Naira260k I paid in Lagos. They have a transport and clearance agent, it's also a Chinese company. My kitchen is not big, I paid USD700, transport USD80, clearance Naira 31K. Their price is not so cheap, but when I see their goods, I like their quality, and all my friends like these China products. That's why I come here. Its simple, not to promote China goods. By the way, am living at NFE, lekki area in Lagos.
