But it's STILL No 18 WITH only a pathetic 1.1% grin
But I can see that you are a little boy child with low intelligence who does not know any better.
If you love France / French so much why do you not go there?

I'm not supporting the policy...however the statistics you provided referred to native speakers and not general speakers or countries who adopt the language as their official language. Nigerians ain't considered as English native speakers...meanwhile it's our official language. When you add up both native speakers and persons who speak the language generally I'm sure English will top the chat followed prob ably by either Spanish, French or Portuguese (the reason is not far fetched because these people engaged in colonisation and imparted their language on others) and then Chinese, German etc

This is not bad.

There were times in my course of work that I had deeply wished I could speak French.

There were even opportunities for international career advancement and exposure that I missed because there were others who stood better chances because they speak both English and French.

Those who wish to especially a pursue career with international donor organizations and NGOs with presence in different African countries should take note.

I weep for Nigeria.
We have not learnt Igbo, Yoruba and Hausa to the basic level for internal interaction and we are talking of making French a major.
I believe the Minister is joking.

French is well down the list and only spoken in backwater countries! (Like France!)
If a Nigerian politician is saying this it is only because of the "gifts" that he has been given!

French and English is spoke in most places in the world.
Personally, i have never had the need to use mandarin.
In my numerous travels and international business meetings, i find myself using more English and French. Sometimes spanish or dutch.
Even our chinese friends, use English or French.
Learning French will help our children immensely!

Ah oui je suis d'accord avec cette idée, le Nigeria est entouré du pays francophone donc il est nécessaire que les population parle français comme deuxième langue.

It's a good thing to have a foreign language but why French?.

I think Chinese or German maybe more beneficial to the future generation,in terms of working and doing business in the 21st century.

I won't waste my time learning French, but if one has French it's still better than not having any other global language though.

I support this move. I think Nigerian should be bilingual in the face of French neigbours. It will help in economic integration of the region. Added to French, Chinese and Arabic should also be taught in Public schools. Thses are the languages of the future.

And Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo, and other Nigerian languages belong to the past, abi? Inferiority complex is a problem.

Most Nigerians can't even speak good English. Our native languages are almost going extinct, but we now have to force Nigerians to learn French. Do they teach any of our Nigerian languages in France?

Very true.

Let's just make it compulsory to learn an international language PLUS one local language for the children.

In my opinion, that's a better policy.

As for those arguing about French prominence or no prominence, the truth is that though French is widely spoken in Africa, Belgium and Quebec, there are at least 4 other languages that are more prominent such as
English
Spanish
Mandarin
Arabic

That's the truth

Why can't our so called brother's also make English compulsory in there school's from pregnancy through creche till they hv passed through uni, this wasy they will be able to interact with us or better still let those close to the north learn hausa, those to the west yoruba language etc

Really? French more important than mandarin? how many top countries speck French aside France? Spanish is spoken by Latin american countries as well as a major language in the US.

The number of speakers is an indication of the importance of the language.

You call another person stup.id without providing any cogent alternative to the argument

The data you provided is based on the population of speakers across the globe

In terms of importance and language to conduct business and political transactions, French is only second to the English language

It is a good development until you can provide a suitable argument against it

Oil exports are dwindling. Nigeria has the potential to produce a lot of goods for the west african sub-region and boost our exports to neighbouring countries, when this happens french would become a necessity for us... it is a step in the right direction.

Currently we do a lot of business with these Francophone countries, but a lot of it is backdoor businesses that are not recorded officially.

What kind of good development? It's a backward development. Must we be forced to always borrow from the white or learn their language?

FG didn't make history or our local languages compulsory but making foreign language compulsory. How many of the foreign countries teach yoruba or igbo or hausa? I guess none. He haven't finish with the English language we have, you are telling us to go for french. How many countries even speak french?

Our leaders are really clueless. Nigeria will continue to be a dumping ground to the white. Then latter they will make Chinese compulsory...

Leaders that don't think before taking actions.

Though I agree with your point, but please don't be sentimental about this....

They don't have to teach any of our local languages in Frande for us to learn theirs (though it's not compulsory we learn theirs either.)

Jihad Nko?

In the ottoman empire days, people of conquered territories preferred Muslim Arab rulership to the draconian roman tyranny. Prophet muhamed had signed a treaty of peace with Christians all the world.

Jihad is a distant offshoot of western oppression, racism and apartheid against Arabs in Palestine by Jews under the support of USA and Europe.

This is dumb, is the govt paying school fees for the students?
Why not Japanese? I would prefer Japanese if we wanna master their technology....Nigeria is not a serious country. we have leaders who do not think and consult before saying anything.
Even if they should speak foreign language, it should be optional and one from the list: French, Chinese, Japanese, Malay, Arabic, Russian, German, Italian.
