Medical Doctor Shot In The Head In Owerri During Peaceful Protest by eaglechild: 4:23pm On Feb 04, 2016
By Chidi Nkwopara, OWERRI
The planned peaceful demonstration by medical
practitioners in Imo State, turned awry today as
a Consultant Family Physician in the Federal Medical
Centre, Owerri, FMC, Dr. Bende Azudialo, was
allegedly shot in the head by a policeman. Giving a
graphic account of the incident during a press
conference in Owerri, the State Chairman of the
Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, Dr. Hyacinth
Emele, ordered a three-day warning strike with effect
from today (Friday).
"If the policeman that fired the lethal shot is not
identified and prosecuted, doctors will commence
indefinite industrial action. The security agencies
and Imo State Government should note that all
hospitals in the state will close shop thereafter until
the erring policeman is fished out and punished",
Emele said. Continuing, the Imo NMA boss, who also
displayed the blood-stained white overall worn by
the wounded doctor, also said that a team of
medical health personnel started working on the
wounded Consultant Family Physician, as soon as he
was rushed to the FMC.
"The initial report we got from the medical team
was that Dr. Azudialo lost about 1.5 litres of blood
when he was rushed to the hospital and that was a
substantial loss", Emele said Speaking also, Dr.
Darlington Akukwu recalled how the NMA formally
wrote the Commissioner of Police, the Directorate of
State Security, DSS, the Federal Road Safety Corps,
FRSC, and all other related agencies to inform them
about the peaceful protest.
"We processed peacefully until we got to Orlu Road
Roundabout. The police barricaded the road and
when we tried to explain our mission to them, they
started firing teargas canisters. One of them later
fired a shot that wounded Dr. Azudialo", Dr. Akukwu
said.
He urged President Muhammadu Buhari and the
Inspector General of Police to find out why Imo
State Government called out the police to shoot at
harmless medical doctors. All efforts made to reach
the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr.
Andrew Enwerem, a deputy superintendent of police
for comments, failed as his line could not be
reached before press time.
However, the police was still stationing over 12
patrol vehicles at the entrance into the State
Secretariat of the Nigerian Medical Association,
when Vanguard left the scene at about 2.15pm.

The layman would say, being at the wrong place at the right time.

The christians would say, God knows why.

The Atheists would say, It part of Gods plan.

When IPOB protested, they were shot at. They said it was because it was Biafra.

Doctors have now protested, they were shot at. What is the excuse this time? They are Biafran Doctors?

What are they protesting? Beer palour gist is what they are protesting. Government wants to improve health care and they prefer status quo so that they will continue killing public hospitals and referring patients to their private clinic..
For Nigerian health sector to improve what Okorocha is doing must be done amidst sacrifices. The protest will fail and so will the planned strike.

You are talking absolute trash.

Over 90% of the protesting doctors are not under Imo state government employ. NMA comprises all medical practitioners and not limited to those working for the state who constitute the minority.

Their protest is not even limited to the happenings in the health sector, which Rochas has completely killed off in the state.

The public health sector in Imo State and Nigeria has been a disgrace over the years. Okorocha wants to concession the health sector and inaugurate health insurance scheme as done in advanced countries. If you don't pay health insurance then you will spend as high in oublic hospitals as you do in private. We equally know that health insurance does not cover all cases. Many health professionals argue that the policy will be harsh on low income earners and vow to stop it from being realised. However some disgruntled politicians see it as opportunity to get at Okorocha.

Who is the concession going to?

Himself and family.

He shut down the Hospital management board and closed down virtually all the state government hospitals. Citizens can now only assess healthcare in the private and FG establishments.
The state teaching hospital is all but dead.

He appointed a barrister as health commissioner. The poor individual was starring cluelessly during the FEC meeting on Lassa fever.

And shooting live bullets at them is the right thing to do, huh?
The more you defend this devil called Okorocha the more you appear stupid. Okorocha has killed Imo health care system, how can a governor privatise all the state owned hospitals? this is beyond imagination. BTW, the money he collected for the building of 27 uncompleted and abandoned general hospitals would've been enough to upgrade the existing hospitals to international standards.
Okorocha is a grade 1 illiterate, he keeps making economic blunders at the detriment of Imolites. All his ill conceived policies are now haunting him. he's complaining of lack of money, but what happened to the ones he has been collecting since? state allocation? local government allocation? NDDC/13% oil derivation? 3.5b naira Adapalm money?
what did he do with all these money aside paying wage bill? Imo cannot boast of anything good aside those strange effigies he has been putting up everywhere around town. I guess those are the images of the deities he worships. Imo is dirty, no access roads, no water, no job, economic activity is zero, bushes have long taken over local government headquarters, since 2011 he came into power no local election.
Imo has turned to a laughing stock by neighboring states, what a shame. this devil has systematically destroyed everything Mbakwe, Udenwa and Ohakim laboured to build.
God will definitely punish him.

The Supreme Court just upheld Ikpeazu, because the powers that be know that that guarantees another wasted 4 years for an important part of the SE, and in short, the East in general. Okorocha dumped his people in APGA and decided to use the people of IMO STATE's fund to campaign for a retired coupist. Now you see medical doctors in the East being shot like gazette. Who will answer? Is it Theo Orji who is "senator" in Abuja? Is it Udenwa or Elechi or Ekweremadu?

Too bad for Ndigbo, and Africa
