A worried mum sent us this

Please nairlander I need advice as I am so devastated and confuse, my two years old son came back from school was all play full the suddenly he started vomitting which lasted for more than 24hrs .I got some malaria drugs thinking its was malaria but it's wasn't helping matters .his stomach got swollen and he was stooling as well .rushed him to the hosp and series of test was done and then doc suggested gynotype which said he is an SS child .was shocked and we rejected d result cos we had a gynotype pregnancy and hiv test done before our wedding cos the church that wedded us requested for it before the wedding was conducted . My husband has gone for a rerun and it changed from AA to AS.I ve always been AS .
My son has never been this ill before ,he doesn't 've the look of a sickler and now this result I don't know what to do .please nairalander who is having same issue and those with experience shld share their advice on how to manage this disease .
this is my first child does that mean I cannot 've anymore children who 'll not b an SS ? Are there any cure or solution to this disease .please help a first time mom .I'm so confused likewise my husband

I would strongly advice you go to a teaching hospital where you would repeat the genotype test, and if possible, yours too and that of the father.....

I'm not surprised if there was a mix-up with the tests done before, concerning our so-called laboratories....

SCD could be a nightmare at times, and the thing is, it doesn't usually manifest until when the child is about 1yr or thereabout, and that is because babies have abundant fetal hemoglobin (HbF) which clears off when the baby is 6mths-1yr....

So in summary, go to a teaching hospital to redo the tests, then we take it from there.....

From the little I know of medicine, ones genotype doesn't change for any reason. I will suggest that u & ur hubby go back to the hospital for genotype test again. Its most likely that the result given to the one of you was switched with another person's. As to the cure for sickle cell, there is no known cure. SS can only be managed whenever your baby have crises. God help u both.

Firstly, I smell some foul play from your hubby. He probably knew from onset that he was an AS, but perhaps because he didn't want to lose you, he had to result to lies.

What do you? An SS child gives one more headache than financial meltdown. Prepare for the inevitable, rushing him to the hospital every once in a while, that is the price you have to pay for not being totally careful before crossing the Rubicon of marriage. He needs love, more love than the Chibok girls in Sambisa forest.

Permanent solution?...Well, though I do not go to church, I believe miracles still exist, and it exists in Jesus, not in the church. Well, church is just some sort of medium. I know of someone whose genotype changed from SS to AA after a crusade by a pastor. I have seen miracles of same genre happen live in churches; who says God cannot heal your son. Take him to Jesus

This is the reason why it is advisable for u to run this kinda test in different hospitals before marriage. It may not be the end for your boy, and you can scale through SS kids if you find favour but your hubby need to be asked questions.

If you still have the first, fake test result, sue their asss off. As for the mean time, take good care of the unfortunate child.

You should repeat the test again, it may be an error cuz genotypes don't just change like that. But something tells me your son is really SS. Whatever the case may be, Sickle Cell Anemia is not a death sentence, thanks to advances in medicine, your son can live a long healthy life with occasional flare ups. All you can do is show him unconditional love but do not over pet him or over protect him like a fragile glass doll.

Prolly one person lied through an arraggee genotype test,I think all of you should go for a confirmation test but if things are still the same,u should just relocate to reedeem camp(real madrid) or synagogue (barca). Depending on which one of them you choose, someday in one of those night vigils God might just decide to have mercy on you and ur family.

To be sincere, I don't think there is a medical solution to a person suffering from sickle cell Anaemia. From your story, the good news is that you can sue that careless hospital and have a good ransom as compensation. If they don't know, the outcome of any genotype result have a tendency to make or break a forthcoming wedding.
It would have been, a different ballgame if you knew and prepare yourself before marriage. Anyway just hope, pray and believe. I have seen a live Case were someone's genotype was changed through prayer. miracle have no boundaries.

Actually bone marrow transplant can cure sickle cell.

You need to do a re-run of tests to put things in the clear.

Genotype's don't change, so its either u ve a divorce, risk having more SS kids or say no to child bearing....

Genotype doesn't no love, coz its one hell of a reality check..

Is genotype result the reason why the poor child should not access proper medicare?

You mentioned swollen stomach- have the doctors ran scan for gastro related issues?

A lil girl i know with the same case like urs suffered similar feat some months ago.After series of tests, a scan revealed the cause of the swollen stomach is excess gas on her stomach.

See another doc and get help for the baby.

Lets stop this attitude of magnifying sickness simply becos the child is SS.
Even people with HIV are living happily with proper management.

You have yourself to blame! You should have done a genotype test first before jumping on the marriage train. You don't risk human lives in the name of love. That baby may survive but that's after you've spent through your nose!
