Please I seriously need a good dog, but I need a smart and courageous dog.. . Please what type of dog do I go for

IMO, don't think there's any dog you can say is 'the best security dog'. It all boils down to the dog's temperament and some security training. I know someone who owns a huge GSD and a samoyed. The GSD hardly barks, very friendly and generally loafs around the compound. The samoyed on the under hand is a study in aggression! Fierce and extremely territorial.

MA guy a boerbull, a bullmastiff, a rotweiller, a German shepherd Esp the DDR or east GSD will give you what you looking for.

Firstly op erase that nigeria mentality there is nothing like security dog it's called guard dogs.

That being said another fact it's dat almost all dog. Breeds can be trained to be guard dogs it all depends on upbringing but research shows that doberman and rottweilers are one of the best guard dogs around especially in nigeria if ur in for a guard dog then I think should get either a rottweiler or a doberman

chairman I disagree with you on using doberman as a guard dog. when seeking for a guard dog size really matters, Doberman cam be an alert dog but lack the necessary size to combat an intruder.

Lols when I mean doberman I don't mean all those cross breed you see people posting on nairaland and other platforms bro if you have read about doberman very well you will understand doberman are categorize are large guard dogs they weigh about 75-100ibs or even more german shepherds are also good guard dogs but are they regarded are large breeds? So u can see size is not the number 1 factor of guard dogs so get ur facts right thankyou

ok bro, for me I can't put Caucasian on the list because I see them as fat,large and lazy.

I don't think people are training chihua hua or pugs for guarding regardless of the upbringing..

For me personally, it will have to be a Rott or Doberman. I have a lot of respect for these breeds.. Honourable mention The Belgian Mali...

I have an aggressive boerbull I want to sell due to cash challenge. it is very intelligent, even in d compound he barks when it hears people foot step outside d fence. u bang at our gate he answer you afar. try it just 80k 13 months boerbull.

Hello Samjr,

You can get a smart and courageous dog in any breed of dog, what I believe you should ask yourself is what do you desire out of a dog. For example, if you were to buy a car to move from point A to B, any car would be great but your requirements on which brand you will get would be influenced by probably your marital status, time and affluence, its the same thing with a dog.

I would use myself as a case study, my first dog was a GSD (may her soul rest in peace), afterwards I craved for a Rot because I felt they had a strong pressence, but upon carrying out a small research, I changed my mind on Rots, due to the fact that I have kids and Rots temperament does not go too well with kids except when they are properly socialised, even at that, most tend to be impatient with kids.

So I went for a Boerboel because of their stable temperament and they been great with kids, till date I have never looked back on my choice, my kids play with them freely and they are very tolerant with belligerant kids, they show a lot of confidence, and on the other hand they are very territorial when they see strangers and their massive body and strength is something nobody would want to dare.

When we are out on a stroll, or public places, most people are so scared of getting close due to their looks but are shocked how my kids play with them, I call them "THE GENTLE GIANTS" ...however if I was single, I probably would have gone for a Rot

For security in Nigeria go for a pittbull, rott, or Doberman.

If you have this dogs especially the first one, thieves will think twice before venturing.
