The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has offered the Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, free form to resit her mathematics exams after a major goof during budget defence at the National Assembly last week.
During the defence, she alleged that one of the exams body in the country made N16 billion from sale of forms and other services, and got additional N6billion from the federal government bringing the total to ‘N24billion’ yet remitted only N2million to the federation account.

Responding to the allegation, the registrar of WAEC Dr. Iyi Uwadiae, not only faulted the minister on the allegation, but also offered her chance to have another go in maths given the poor summation of the figures.

Uwadiae said: “It’s not enough to go to the Senate and reel out figures. The minister should know, that what Nigerian students pay to sit for WAEC examinations is simply an operational/management cost, that covers registration, data keeping and management, printing of examination papers, logistics, marking of scripts and production of certificates. And all these cost about N16 billion Naira.

“WAEC examination is not designed as a revenue generating source for the Federal Government. In fact governments in the past subsidized the examination fees, just to encourage education. The N6 billion she talked about is for payment of salaries and overheads for staff of the council.

“However, we do not know the mathematical formula the Honourable Minister used, when she said the summation of N16 billion Naira and N6 billion Naira was N24 billion Naira.

“I think somebody needs to resit her WAEC mathematics examination. And we in WAEC have offered to give her a free WAEC form in this respect.”

It is problematic if FG is the one paying WAEC staff, for the fact that they collect more than 11,000 from each candidates and they return noting to FG pocket, this is more or less a liability to the country. if one should count they dont have up 5,000 worker in Nigeria that would warrant them getting 22billion Naira.

Meanwhile, Iyi Uwadiae should know that throwing a jibs like this is wrong for person in his status. in JEGA Voice, "You should Mind your public conduct"

No wonder the value of the naira is falling.
Please the senators urgently need to hire an accountant or auditor to check the mathemaitcal calculations of the figures in the budget it might be full of blunders too. We might end up with a 24 trillion naira budget.

Kemi should tender her resignation letter asap

If this news was about NOI, you would have been screeming from the rooftop. This national blunder only shows that Kemi is not qualified to be the Minister of Finance in Nigeria.
The waec official has explained and added that previous govts had to subsidise waec same way they subsidise state and federal univerisities. Would you prefer if the cost of waec form is increased to 100k so that it will generate revenue for the government?

Three things are key to the fight against corruption
1. Moral values
2. Accounting
3.Policing

In that other. Not fixing those first 2 is the same as filling a basket. Good thing the minister is talking about proper accounts. Unfortunately for her, fixing that problem will indict 99 percent of her party members. Waec has said it cost 16 billion to run itself same way Fashola has said it cost 75 million to build a website site. Same way we all know government contracts are overly marked up.
