First, Let all be smart here for once, how are you going to import Diapers from all the way USA to Nigeria, The transportation cost alone for 40' HQ container from most USA port to Nigeria is like $5500-7000, now how many diaper can you stuff inside this container to justify the transportation cost alone, because you and I know that you can full that container with more diaper to make profit bearing in mind that dollar to Naira is in 170n range and also you can not get a better price in usa than places like china where you can get the one piece foe $0.05, In fact I doubt that you can get any price nearer like that anywhere in usa, The only way I see its is that you can not make any profit from importing diaper from US to Nigeria, that is the simple fact, in fact if you are not getting its below $0.08 a piece, I can not see you making any profit on it, my advise is for you to try importing it from China, and if you need contact from company that you can get it for prices from $0.05-0.08, send me an email at matheworama@gmail.com, I will give you their contact free of charge,

But then again why even import something as low as diaper when you can as well manufacture it in Nigeria with either used production line @ $150,000 or new at $210,000 for capacity of 300pcs per minutes production line, I supply both used and new production line

@ duzz.

Good idea. But did u take into consideration the challenging environment we live in. To start the manufacture process, he must get NAFDAC go ahead, set up and develop his own market. Again, power, labour and other variables. Whereas with importation all he needs is for himto buy and get people to sell for him.

@ poster.
Do you live in Nigeria? If yes, what line of business are you currently into? Have u ever done retail trade? Please inonre distributors and get to sell you products by yourself. Don't throw away your money pls.
Re: Diaper Business In Nigeria by duzz: 3:37pm On Aug 19, 2009
Yes I understand your position, but Energy is not the problem, a baby diaper line with 300pcs per minutes capacity consume only 150kw but in actual send he will need at list 180kw power supply, now he can buy two 180Kw LPG generator at around $18-30k and contact total Nigeria to supply him with at list 10,000 gallon LPG tank at his factory and he is ready to go, with that he will even have cheaper power than manufacturer in USA, In regards to NAFDAQ permit, that is noting, in any country you need the same health inspection or permit as you call its and that is not the reason to discourage local manufacturing. even importing sensitive goods like diaper may even require the same nafdaq inspection.Although there is constant power supply in the western countries does not means that its cheap, in fact most manufacturing operation in US with power need above 400Kw normally use LPG gen set to run there daily business because its cheaper per kw hour than grid supply power, so he manufacturing in Nigeria will still enjoy the same power advantage if he uses LPG gen set and also advantage of cheap labor and being nearer to the consumer, and also help the country economy move forward,

Maybe. But u still have then you still have to look at the current trend in LPG usage. Is it that friendly? If it is how come manufacturing companies are relocating to saner climes? Then the distribution end. Retail business is tough business. Looking for distributors when your products are not well known. You might just be signing a debt warrant.

Where do u get ur info from? I live here in the US and all you are talking about is news to me. Theres no way you can produce power from a gen cheaper than grid. The grid is always cheaper, cleaner and less palava.

Also, if ur premise is tru, its much easier getting LPG (natural gas) delivered here. Its already piped everywhere like water and all you need is just to tap it and pay for usage. Getting LPG delivered in Naija is a different type of ballgame.

And mind you, a diesel generator is still much cheaper to run than LPG. Why? Cos diesel has a lower "flashpoint" than LPG. Hence you consume much less. People run LPG gens cos they can just tap it underground without having to be messing with diesel all the time.

grin Have you taught about the damage the diapers will do to the environment ? Nigeria doesn't t have the resources nor machinery to recycle or dump the diapers after the final usage, Think about the harm !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!because it takes about 100years for the used diapers to decompose in the soil .It is not just about the money, you will make cool cool coolbut the . the impact on the environment. I hate to inform you that Duzz is in-fact correct. You are wrong in assuming that a Diesel generator is cheaper than a gas generator. This is woefully wrong. In terms of cost of gas v/s cost of diesel, in Nigeria Gas is much cheaper. I did an analysis of a Caterpillar Generator and found out that it is really blatantly stupid that we use diesel instead of gas for even our personal generators in Naija.

At the price that our Government sells gas to PHCN, I calculated that it comes to less than N-0.10 per KVA/Hr. Using the same generator running diesel will cost N15.44 per KVA/Hr. Now even if the government made the gas available for 10 times what they sell to NEPA it will still be 2/3 cheaper than running it on diesel.

Remember that the USA imports gas which has a significant cost factor involved in liquifying it for shipment, and then regasifying it at arrival. Then we have the duty tariffs and pipeline fees involved as well. This is why gas is much more expensive in the U,S. You could go to Caterpillars website and do the calculations yourself by choosing a particular model and comparing the fuel usage between gas and diesel. The PHCN factor that I used is N16.64 per MCF.

The best part of using gas is also the fact that it burns much cleaner than diesel, and has a much reduced particulate emission issue. It is much more earth friendlier because the gas being burnt used to be flared in Nigeria until the government forced the processing of associated gases from oil wells. Hope this helps.
Re: Diaper Business In Nigeria by larez(m): 12:52am On Aug 24, 2009
To assist you with the calculations, here are some factors that I used.

1 Kg of Gas = 9.66 Cubic Feet = 1.985 Litres

P.S. Also note that maintenance on a Gas powered generator is also much cheaper than the diesel counterpart which is much dirtier. Oil change spans are hence longer, and with the adulterated diesel being imported to Nigeria, you would have no need to be replacing rubber hoses that harden and break from the bad diesel.

@ Larez,

I would like to think that you are waaaayyyyy to knowledgeable to be talking like this. What is the possibility of getting constant gas in Naija? Also read thru this following links.

I will like to see your comparison table if you dont mind.

And here are my calculations. Hope this helps

Re: Diaper Business In Nigeria by KunleA2(m): 7:16am On Aug 24, 2009
And how do you address the delivery of natural gas in Naija? undecided Many ppl don't cook with it so if ts scarce there little complain as opposed to diesel. How do you get it delivered in large qty?

NEPA rate is not what individuals will be paying. So using a NEPA propane cost rate vs street rate of diesel prices is not the same thing. i think you may be comparing apples and oranges. NEPA are mega consumers, hence economy of scale. That is why is always cheaper to get your power from NEPA than running a GEN in the first place.

What we need is to know the current street prices of gas cylinders and i am not sure how many CuF/litres it equivalent to. Then we calculate like that with diesel street prices.

Nigerians are not stupid. Nor all the expatrate and indians/Lebanese manufacturers. If propane gensets are convenient, viable and more economic than diesel, they will have been using it long time ago. Propane might make more economic sense in running a turbine than a genset.

I am yet to digest the data very well. As much as i know that numbers don't lie, its easy to lie about numbers tho.
Re: Diaper Business In Nigeria by larez(m): 7:48am On Aug 24, 2009
Promise:

You know I am always precise with my words. Go back and read what I initially wrote. It included a factor of X10, and still 2/3 cheaper. This is a new area in Nigeria that is only now being developed. There are efficient supply mechanisms in place already and there are competing players involved. Oando through it's subsidiary Gaslink and Total are already big players in this field.

Since we are talking about industries, then how could you compare this with kitchen propane? Industrial gas use will be considered large consumption and right now NNPC is looking at creating a 3 tier sales point level, with PHCN being the lowest rate offered.

Gas will always be a cheaper alternative in Nigeria to imported diesel and will in-fact help our economy by saving our foreign exchange flight out of Nigeria. Fuel import drains us of forex significantly, and the government should actually create special incentives for Industries that will consume gas, while leaving the transport (pipelines) to private investors but with price caps on them.

You've heard the saying that goes like " My people suffer and die for their lack of knowledge". This applies in this case as well. Looking at even the street price of propane which is currently at about N2000-N2200 for 12 Kg, would you believe that it is still better than using petrol to fuel your lil generators? Do the math and see. The skepticism of the unknown and the obvious profit that diesel importers make is the reason for the discouraging of information in this regards.

For your information, NNPC is currently working on coming up with a pricing scheme and are involving stake holders in this issue. I have looked at several presentations from NNPC and I think there was one done by Soludo as well to resolve this pricing issue. But how could it not be better if it's a local product that is very cheap, more earth friendly with possible Green credits available to the users from developed nations. It also reduces smog, creates a new source of revenue for the government, it is not regulated by a cartel such as Opec, and it is in great demand by developed Nations.

We are all aware of the safety issues concerning Gas, but do you know that Nigeria is more of a Gas producer that an Oil producer? Do you know that we have 6 trains and I think about 4 more being developed? To tell you frankly, Gas is Nigeria's future and not Oil. Russia already recognizes this and knows Nigeria is capable of undermining it's control and monopoly in Europe which it sees as a threat to it's domineering power plays. Russia will gladly develop all the gas fields in Nigeria to be able to manipulate prices and will probably give it to Nigerians to use for free.

Have you noticed that Fashola has decided to follow Brazil's footstep  and is now embarking on purchasing more natural gas Buses for transportation rather than D\iesel powered ones. I guess you now have enough information to know where to invest your funds. But all the numbers and information work in support of the Gas alternative.

Here is a link to the savings calculator by Gaslink, a subsidiary of Oando.
http://www.gaslinknigltd.com/resources_savingsanalysistemplate.aspx
I had come across it recently and thought you may find it very informative. They have a pricing structure in place as well and will supply you with the Gas that you need. For your info, There is a gas loop around Lagos that was recently completed and continues to neighbouring West African countries such as Rep. Du Benin, Togo and Ghana. It is known as the West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP). It has been commissioned already and has been active for about a year now. You may want to Google it for more information.
