Nigerians have wholeheartedly embraced technology especially when it comes to the use of mobile devices. In nearly every household, you will find a more than 3 phones with internet access as mobile service providers continue to make data affordable.

In spite of all these positives, there are some ridiculous things that have happened as a result of the way Nigerians use their phones. However, before anybody could put a stop to it, it has gone viral. Jovago, Africa’s No 1 hotel booking portal shares 4 hilarious yet weird phone hoax in Nigeria.

Collapsing after picking a call

This is the best-known phone hoax in Nigeria. The story was all over that some people collapsed and died after picking a particular number. It was so real that some Nigerians stopped picking unknown numbers. Of course, this was a rumour. You cannot collapse except you have health issues. Unfortunately, many Nigerians fell for this hoax. It was later dispelled by the Nigerian communication Commission (NCC).

Mobile network giving out Free credit and data

Getting a service for free is in the DNA of a Nigerian. They want to take full advantage of a free offer of a free deal. So, when there is information the public domain that a particular network is giving free credit and data, you see Nigerians migrating to that network. Even your friend will tell you that he received 50,000 from a network. Unless there is a network error such a thing can never happen!

Hausas are always dialling the wrong number

You received a call from an unfamiliar number, the likelihood it is a Hausa man that dialed your number. Before you respond to his hello, he has started speaking Hausa. You have to tell him that he is calling the wrong number. This is not completely true because other Nigerian ethnic groups also dial the wrong digit but it is mostly common among Hausas. why, we know not!

Picking calls at night

This is common among the aged folks, they do not pick their calls in the night or they switch it off. There is no rea for switching off your phone than the fear of the unknown. Nigerians are very superstitious people. You can pick your calls at any time of the day!

80% of Nigerians fell for that killer number trick! You dare not use another number to call your parents cos them no go pick! Everybody wan go heaven, but nobody wants to die!

The one of free credit is so rampant, scammers now leverage on it to get easy money from ignorant people!

My guy that Hausa always dialling the wrong number is true o, 90% of wrong calls I have received all my life is from the Hausas and it is always from their men (maybe their women are not allowed to make calls. undecided)

One still called me yesterday just when I was expecting to receive a call from a babe that was visiting for the first time and didn't know her way , the dude just kept yapping some incoherent noise in my ears "Kai Alhaji Musa, Kadaka zo gobe, Kadaka zo gobe! ".... ....... I was like dude, I don't _fucking understand your language and can you kindly _fuck off, I'm expecting an important call. " I dropped the call only for the doofus to call 30 seconds later, well, ofcourse I didn't pick.

The most annoying part is that the guy used a different number to call me only to start muttering the same nonsense again "Alhaji Musa, Kadaka zo gobe
Kadaka zo gobe" Haba, dem swear for you ni? angry

Before 8pm yesterday, my phone was already showing 7 missed calls from the guy. sad

Point of correction, Nigerians can believe anything so long as the rumour stays long enough.

One of such rumours nearly killed me: when one respectable guy told me he would give me #1mil if I got him an old grandfather clock and other similar antique items claiming that one mysterious rare mercury metal dey inside.

Another deceived me claiming if I dialled the imei of my phone whenever it was stolen, MTN will jam & render the phone useless.

Yet another one made me enter gutter looking for MTN used recharge cards when one morning in 2007/2008 some people said if I load any used card e go enter coz somebody hawk MTN server. That morning I received about 19calls from people claiming they loaded up to 20k
