103. Japanese trains are among the world's fastest and most punctual, their average delay is 18seconds.
Any delay over 5 minutes usually incurs an apology and a “delay certificate” for passengers on their way to work.

109. The least accessible memorial in the world, built to remember 170 people who died when a plane blew up over the Sahara desert in 1989, can be seen on Google Earth and Google Maps. UTA Flight 772 was flying from Brazzaville in the Republic of Congo to Paris CDG Airport in France on September 19, 1989, when a bomb went off in the luggage compartment. The blast resulted in the plane tearing apart mid-air, killing everyone on board - including Bonnie Barnes Pugh, wife of the U.S. Ambassador to Chad. Evidence traced the bomb back to Libya.
Eighteen years after the attack and explosion over Sahara desert, of the UTA flight 772 from Congo to Paris, on September 19th 1989, the families of those who perished, gathered at the crash site and built a memorial.

The cabin of the flight lay separate from the rest of the plane which came down when a bomb exploded in 1989.

But according to Boeing777pilot, there is no need for multiple pilots on those long flights because the airplanes pretty much fly themselves these days.
The pilots are only fully flying the plane during take-off and landing
Re: Random And Interesting Travel Facts World's Travellers Probably Dont Know. by Explorers(m): 6:10pm On Apr 29, 2016
Hundreds of dark rocks were trucked in from up to 70 miles away and laid out in the shape of a DC-10 inside a compass. The memorial is visible on Google Maps. Although the plane crash marks a dark moment in history, this heartwarming memorial to the victims restores our faith in humanity.

170 broken mirrors, each one representing one passenger, line the memorial’s circumference, and a plaque with each of the victims’ names was affixed to the upright wing.

planes can even land themselves now. the only reason pilots land it is for insurance/liability and union purposes

We still need multiple pilots oh.
For several reasons as I explained in another thread.

We have more than one captain. A first officer can't legally sit in the captains seat.

In all my long haul flights , we have had at least two captains.

Errm, that's not technically correct.
Plane can technically fly themselves on auto pilot once they reach cruising altitude but during the approach and descent as well as take off human input is required.

Besides, even if it's on auto pilot, the pilots have to be alert to respond to any emergency.

Even though, we have state of the art aircrafts, the pilots are still very very important. In emergency, the on board systems can't decide, you have to and God help you if the instruments readings are wrong.

Planes fly themselves now, but takeoff and landing, not yet.
Takeoffs are the most critical phase of flight on large aircraft. Lots of things can happen during takeoff/landing which autopilot might not be able to handle like taxi from the gate on a narrow, curverd way to tje runway base to lineup for takeoff(autopilot dont have the eyes and sense), changing weather or wind, short or limited runway left, emergencies, and i also learnt that sensors to help the aircraft avoid other aircraft, obstacles, birds haven't been fully developed and tested. There are a lot of planes in close proximity on the ground, plus numbera duty vehicles like (fire trucks, fuel trucks, de-icers, cargo trucks) Steering around all of those would be quite difficult.

The point is that planes can not only fly by themselves they can also auto land. That is a fact

Autoland is even more useful when there is a bad weather and the pilots wont have to do much

Which Commercial plane can auto land ma?

By its self without input from the pilots?

Just so you know, I'm a pilot and I fly the Boeing 777 but I'm willing to learn.

I never said pilots imputs are not required.I said planes can auto land. If planes can fly themselves does that mean pilots inputs are not required for autopilots?

110. The smoothest place to sit on a plane is over or near the wing. Seats towards the back will be the bumpiest place but safer when we talk about crashing.

For the avoidance of doubt, auto land helps to automate the landing process that does not mean that planes can land by themselves because the automated process must be subject to pilot action.

Lol and auto pilot helps automate the flying process that doesnt mean planes can fly by themselves because the automated process must be subject to pilot action. I still dont see your point. Are we debating semantics now?

111. Being on the ground does not equal safety.
The deadliest accidents in airplane history actually occurred prior to takeoff. A deadly combination of fog and mixed radio signals from the flight deck caused two planes, carrying over 600 passengers between them, to collide head-on in the middle of a runway in the infamous Tenerife Accident. Over 500 passengers died as a result of this crash.(1977).

I'm a pilot and not an English is professor.
According to you, with auto land plane can land themselves and I'm telling you that planes don't land themselves with autoland . Auto land as used in that context doesn't mean that planes can Land themselves literally as you appear to suggest.

I dont care about your profession. You quoted my post and mis represented it. You dont get to have a certain authority over a topic because of your alleged profession if you are wrong and you dont need to be an English professor to understand it.

I said planes can land themselves now. You are talking about pilot input in the process. That isnt the point i was making and i asked you, if someone says plays can fly by themselves, does that automatically mean pilot's role in setting it to auto pilot is irrelevant therefore the statement is untrue?

I still dont get what you are driving at exactly.

Usually caused by changes in cabin pressure during take-off and landing.
