I have a B.Sc Industrial Chemistry ( 4.01/5), Pgd Chemical Engineering ( Distinction ).

I applied for a Canadian admission for MSc.E Chemical Engineering. Normally for your admission to be successful you need to secure a supervisor whose research interest is similar to yours. I have done that and he encouraged me to apply. I submitted my application and after going through my application with other supporting documents like letter of motivation and others, he sent me a mail this afternoon that they want to consider me PhD instead of MSc I applied for. I'm very confused right now if to accept it or not considering high standard of education abroad as I use to hear, I haven't experienced foreign education before, this is my first. Please note my ultimate goal is to obtain a PhD. Please help me push to the front thread cos I need advice from experienced Nigerians who have studied abroad. Thanks. I appreciate
As a study abroad consultant, I will advice you take a look at the structure first. Some PhD has taught courses while some are pure research. If this have the former structure, I would advice you go for it, of course you if it's within your financial ability though I suppose they will have a financial aid for you. If I may ask, which country is that?

Congrats first of all. I am sure u have since accepted the offer, but I will just add that the PhDs offer gives you double certificate. This means that you will be authomatically awarded an MSC. Degree on arrival and automatic roll over into phd. You may as well be encouraged to stay back after studies. Pls accept it also even if for just experience purposes. It will give u a great opportunity to know why Nigeria is in this circumstance. Good luck and I wish u all ur heart wishes.
Cheers

In canada it is not uncommon to skip stages. Especially when you are exceptional. So take the offer. Don't use Nigerian mentality to judge canada. They are way ahead of us. grin and then prepare well for the task ahead. Not everybody is stereotyped.

It's not a new thing in western countries, so many grads are embracing Ph.D lately. Also, Ph.D comes with different forms of funding including research grants. The question is are you intellectually prepared for the demands of a Ph.D program? You are seeing things from the Nigerian point of view where most thing are rigid and are presumed not to come easy. I suggest you accept the offer.

Hi, go for it. It could be a PhD programme but the first year, you do some master course then the next three years you proceed to your Phd working around the same research topic. In some schools the first six months your are developing your proposal then you present only after a successful presentation then they give you the go ahead to proceed on phd. Contact the supervisor again to clarify things properly.

About schooling abroad, I don't think you should bother much, except if your project has some modeling using a programming language that is when you should look at your strength. I had a B. Eng mechanical engineering proceeded to do a master in Chemical Engineering, graduated with Cum Laude in a foreign University. So far you are good at your basics, with good computer skills you are good to go. Note the first three months of resumption are tricky as their approach to education might be different, how to print, use the library, find your bearing around, access school database, Department and Faculty colloquium etc but once you hit momentum up the sky is your starting point.

One last thing, be sure of funding.

Best wishes bro.

Ph.D in Canadian universities is 4years. The first year is more like an 'intensive masters'. So no worries. Am sure your supervisor will recommend you for a 'scholarship' or a 'grant' because all research students usually get funding support. Since your goal is to get a Ph.D, I suggest you grab the offer QUICKLY. And be ready to perform well.

From what I'm seeing here, you likely applied for a Research based Masters and, in Canada, having a PGD means your Masters will be concluded in a year. I'm also of the opinion that you must have mentioned in your statement of motivation that you want to proceed to PHD after the Masters, this may be why your supervisor feels there's no need wasting a year of research since you'll do same in PHD, considering you must already have sufficient background in your pgd and your area of interest likely is more chemistry related. So, I think the man possibly knows what he's doing but if you are still feeling jittery, then write him to try and explain why he feels you can proceed to PHD and if his reasons are likely that what you will do in the Masters is still part of what you will do in Phd. I however also suspect you may want to add Masters title to your accolades grin, if that's the case, ask him if you can run the two programmes concurrently.

Best Regards

I faced a similar scenario, though I already had a first class degree in chemical engineering with a CGPA of 4.83.
I applied for a Msc scholarship to imperial college, United Kingdom.
MY sponsor who saw the strength of my transcript knew I would be offered a PHD program but didn't tell me for fear of me bolting.
I later got a correspondence from the University asking me to run a PHD program., and I was absolutely dumbfounded. I was barely 23 years old, fresh off a bachelors program, exhausted from the rigors of long hours of study , and now being asked to run a PHD.!!!
I did the PHD program anyway, and excelled, and I think you will too.
You just need to prepare to work very hard, be quick witted, and open your mind to absorb knowledge like a sponge. And most importantly, plagiarism is your worst enemy over there.
Avoid it. Good luck

Bro, accept quickly...
You don't always need masters to apply for PhD in UK for instance. A second class upper division like yours and above is all they need with the right motivation.

Please do not miss this opportunity...

Inbox me if you ever have not made up your mind to accept.

You are blessed.

Note: Foreign education is far easier than Nigerian education. It can be intense but you get used to it and they are always ready to guide you.

Don't mind that guy. They simply upgrade his transcript and got P.hD points. He ought not not have don't the PGD in the first instance.

The professor is RIGHT to recommend you for Ph.D considering your qualifications and result. Your first degree is industrial chemistry (4.01/5) and you have a DINSTINCTION in chemical engineering pgd. There is no need to do a masters in chemical engineering having gotten a distinction at post gradute level. Since industrial chemistry and chemical engineering are very related, and you have excelled well at both; you should progress to a ph.d.

To keep it simple- go for the Phd programme. There is not much difference between PGD and Master degree. In fact just few courses difference.

Please accept the offer.

Most professors don’t like investing in masters students. The return on investment is not that great from a research perspective as they usually graduate about the time they are supposed to start providing good return on investment.

PhD is usually 4 years as compared to two years masters. Course requirement for master is usually 4 grad level courses for masters and two for PhD in Canada. However, this depends on your supervisor. Essentially the courses are the same for both masters and PhD. The only difference is the time you spend doing research. While you spend around 1 year for MSc you usually spend 3 years for PhD research. From a research point of view, one PhD provides more research value than two MSc’s. I believe you can see why your supervisor offered a PhD instead of MSc.

Two things required to succeed in PhD are: Motivation and Patience/Persistence. You sound motivated so you should be good.

Once you have your PhD nobody cares about MSc. It’s like asking a medical Dr. for his WAEC result .

Also, virtually all graduate studies in Canada come’s with Research Assistance (RA) and you will also be eligible to get Teaching Assistant (TA). These two sources of funding should cover your tuition and living expenses and you should have like $200-$400 extra depending on the city you live in. You are also eligible to work 20hrs per week outside the University.

Since your long-term goal is a PhD, I do not see any reason not to accept the offer.

Reply the professor and let him know you are excited about the offer and you can’t wait to join his research team.

Congratulations and the entire best sir.

Receive sense IJN undecided.........please if you know absolutely nothing about a subject of discuss why don't just just scan through comments alone and learn a thing or two. Its a norm for extremely talented students to get admission for PHD without Msc, it's not just something you see every now and then though.

My advice for you:

Normally, most foreign university don't offer PGD like Nigerian. Your PGD is equal to their MSc. Going by your distinction, you are a good student who can cope with MSc. So, go ahead and accept. Oversea education is not as difficult as Nigerian's.

Who says Ph.D is free anywhere? Even to the citizens, it's not free when not scholarship and Canadian citizenship is not everything. Oga Team16; I would advice you to look at it in many ways, you have a bright future nd please don't restrict urself with today's offer for Ph.D to tomorrow future. Look at it in a way that you are fighting a highly competitive post and there are lot of guru's like urself, don't you think the easiest way to choose the best of the guru's is thru their certs, guru's that have masters have upper hands to you that jumped it. Please follow your heart. Your supervisor is not God regardless of the certs he/she bagged.

Congratulations team16.this shows you are a potential prof for them to have giving you this kind of offer. . I will say beg them to accept you for msc first and then apply for scholarship. But if it's not possible, proceed immediately. After three years, u I'll be a PhD holder. This is one in a million opportunity. Now gud people of this thread, I I'll like to know how possible it is for me to get a masters scholarship in Canada with a cgpa of 4.49. I will master in international relations. The point is that I want to take part in key international decision making and negotiations just like US John Kerry or look for job in UN, multinational corporations or on government parastatals or embassies. My parents cannot afford to sponsor me. I don't know how feasible scholarships are in canny and how to go about it if there is. Please help me.
