I got to jkk around 8am, hoping the exam would start by 10am, since it was a standardized exam, we didn't start till like 11am.

I met one nairalander at the venue, nice guy, he recognized me and came to greet me, even during this hardship faced in nigeria.

The whole venue was very boring na him I spot one unilag babe, we got chatty, all gre fly comot for my head.

Did the data capture, they collected everything we had on and gave us pencil.

Started with the first section, it was blessed, as prescribed on the 1st page, I used Kaplan for my issue, it was smooth, It was a topic about studying the a society and the city, and just showing that a city is Germane to study of a society or not, I didn't practice with ets pool of topics because I wanted the exam to be like a exam were I would be able to think creatively, and not try and remember a topic I have practiced earlier.

The argument aspect was better, but I couldn't conclude well, Manhattan book helps you in seeing 1001 flaws, too much points too little time, I articulated them well, but my conclusion didn't pull through about 5 lengthy paragraphs.

2nd section was Verbal, I knew my strong point in verbal was Reading comprehension, the first set of text completion were abstruse, I couldn't find the pattern easily, I answered some correctly(maybe), I moved to my the RC, 1st Rc was short , blasted it, under 2 mins, next was the usual 4 questions very long RC, I practiced with coadcoax, so long RCs were a blessing, unlike the short ones filled with so much logic, long RC I read it calmly, I identified the main idea, the tone, and other senrenre, I wrote the RC down like a tweet, so the whole thing was fixated to my mind, Sentence equivalence on the Real gre is not the type you see in those books oooh, they are not the popular synonyms, they make sense individually. If you look too much at the options, another meaning enters your head.

3rd was the Quant, In my mind I said this is the time to shine, the questions you see on the 1st part of the gre are the ones gruber made is 25 strategies about, there is no need for too much calculations from the 1st to like 5th question, just your the test of knowing that a variable can carry any sign unless stated and Co, i wondered why ets always reiterated that to you should know questions you miss during practice, they have a format and these questions would hunt you, I fumbled in all the 3 data set, I didn't practice data set in the last 4 days of the exam, I thought it was moimoi as usual, but the charts I saw!... I missed the usual compound interest questions which I always miss, you won't see this interest and Co clearly stated I 5lb Manhattan and the rest,I also missed the independent probability question which I always miss, I missed like 5 or so In this section.

4th section verbal, it was easier than the 1st,it was clear I either performed woefully in the 1st part or It was the experimental section, it was straight forward, the text completion were the normal ets style, clue, pointer and gre vocab, RC was harder for me now, they were short, they were more and would require more time. Only one on RC scaled through

The 5th was quant, the first question was like a RC it was long, from practice tests, I noticed the 1sr questions are tough, the question after quantitative comparism tough and after data set too tough, they are time Consumers, but I made a mistake which I always knew was a mistake, I wanted to ensure I performed well In this part because I Don mess up for the 1st quantitative, I was solving to the letter, lo and behold I met one of my favorite missed questions, instead of skipping, I ran ri mo , chop valuable 3 minutes, moved on to the data set, the one was even more complex 8 mins, 7 more question to go, I didn't know one there my eye just dey see black, next question the sum of a recursive set that is in every ets material, I missed it and he choop time, I was able to run through the last 3 questions about to click answer for the last time dissappear, I said to myself, this is the end. When I clicked the next section and it was verbal, none of my quant was experimental they were the real shit!!!!

Last section, I clicked continue continue continue, I didn't even look, I said to myself, I Don fail gre, I looked at the guy at my side that one didn't have clue, I garnered hope, I just did the last section, one kind one kind, even RC, I skimmed for the pointers and answer questions using the bad options methods,

I finished my Gre and I told myself, omo u Don cast, 65,600 Don burn, I didn't want to report scores...

I reported scores blah blah blah...

Quant - 156
Verbal - 154

310...

156 was my minimum score in Kaplan online test, I had 2 156,1 158,1 162...in verbal I had 147s highest was 150...

Princeton I had 153 in my 1st quant, 162 in my 2nd, 150 and 153 were my verbal scores

Manhattan test 159 quant, 154 verbal.

Power prep 2 149, 158 were my quant scores yeah I did the power prep test 1 twice, verbal 150,152... I didn't do power prep 2 2nd test, I read it like 3 days to the exam..

My little advice, the 1st page of this trend can give you a good gre score but find what works for you.

Verbal, : verbal grail, coadcoax and 1014 Princeton, magoosh flashcards and that new meme software that dude recommended days ago is very good, but it was late

Quant : 5lb Manhattan, official guide, ets quant set, kaplan online quiz and gruber you are good ...

Need to buy a single text book buy the official guide and get a good Internet connection, the Internet is the best resource...

To access the Kaplan online portal for 2016, the answer is text

More gist dey I just gats summarize...

Danjaninja special thanks sir... You are a blessing and bless up to everyone who helped me and the Facebook group was the place I got confidence after the 149,150 score in power prep 1 test...
The difference from the 149 and my 156 score now was the material I used to study.....

Thank you for that reply. I've started browsing on different schools as SirRiddy advised sha, I wanted to know how the course was that was why I asked. Another issue though is that though I haven't written GRE n TOEFL, I've gotten the materials from d self study email, but I saw a school that requested for 6003 TOEFL and GRE score n I really don't understand it. Any explanation is welcomed.

As a side note: the guy that asked about marine biology, Texas A & M University claims to run that program big time, so he can probably check that out.

DanjaNinja:

These are not issues. My GPA was lower. I had a 2.89 and i still got admitted. Major, i switched as well. My undergrad was in Electrical Engineering and now? Am doing a Masters in Computer Science. I wont lie to you, changing majors is challenging - You have to start from scratch, even worse alot of classes assume you have some prerequisite knowledge which you don't have. I kid you not, you would seem like the dumbest person in a lot of classes but if you persevere, study smart and do academic work, you will be fine.

In summary, your GPA and major should not deter you. Do a good job on the GRE, make at least a 310 combine that with good statement of purpose and you should be good. One last thing though: be smart about the schools you apply to. Apply to a mix of average schools and schools that would beg you to attend. The beauty of America is that for every academic percentile, there is a school for you.

This by SirRiddy comes in handy as well:

Morning Mr DanjaNinja.I'm new to . Please I'd like to ask 1) Did your admission to the MSc Comp Sci. come with funding? being that you don't possess a Bsc Comp sci. 2) Did your reference letters come ONLY from your lecturers IN your dept of Elect Elect.? Eagerly awaiting your response sir.

You can definitely apply but forget about funding. Most Petroleum Engineering programs in the US don't provide funding in the first year via GA/TA. However, you could be considered for a scholarship and out-of-state tuition waiver depending on your overall profile. So, you'll need to do well in your GRE and TOEFL. You can't do anything about your CGPA. Make sure you've got a sound SOP and be ready to justify the switch from geophysics. The letters of recommendations are important too. I'll suggest you contact the graduate advisors of the school you like and inquire about your situation (Geophysics UG). Trust me, you'll have to take a number of UG Petroleum Engineering courses you'll probably finish your MSc. in 36 months. The same thing applies in my Alma Mata to MSc. students who had a different course of study during UG. I'm a Petroleum Engineering graduate so I've got a pretty good idea of the situation.

JoshSW hi,
I believe scoring high in your standardized test would improve your chances.
Also, ensure your GPA would amount to at least 3.0 on a 4-point scale,
since most grad schools usually require this. You can use this to know that:

Good luck.

Thanks boss. Also, SirRiddy (and the house in general)..... 1) with good GRE scores, SOP and references, do i realistically stand a chance of going for a PhD in my (original) Geophysics field? 2) can i get admission with GA/TA funding into a MSc Geophysics (with this cgpa/wes evaluated GPA)? ... pls don't mind my questions o! just trying to make well-informed decisions!....... Truth be told, you'll never know until you ask the graduate advisor. You stand a chance if there's no policy in place barring first year TA/RA. In that case, it'll be a factor of your overall profile, how early you apply and the departmental budget for the fiscal year. There are so many Geoscience programs as against Petroleum. You should get a program that'll suit your needs. Start researching and contacting schools in Texas and Oklahoma.

For PhD, they'll most likely require some level of research experience which you can only show via publications. You can work towards getting a paper published in NAPE or AAPG. That will be a strong boost for PhD application for a Geoscience programs.

Truth is PhD admission is generally very competitive.
If you do not have a 3.5/4, a PhD in a top 100 ranked school
is a far reach. I have a 3.28/4, got into a PhD program (ranked 90) and
it is still quite incerdible to me, even though I had quite good test scores.
My PhD applications would likely be thrown out of most top 50 Computer
Science programs.
Maybe a PhD program in a school that is not ranked might accept a low GPA.
It is not adviseable to pursue PhD in this kind of school though.
One factor that might throw a different dimension into your application
is if you have good research experience. This is the most important factor
in PhD admissions. If you have published an academic paper in a reputable
journal, then you can argue your case better.

Funding depends on the availability of funding and your profile. PhD candidates
stand better chances than MS counterparts.
Every individual case is unique and it is advisable that you properly do
you research while looking for schools to apply to.
1. google.com
2. the schools' websites
3. top conferences and journals in your discipline
4. US news ranking and other revered rankings
5. Faculty work and their research interests.
6. gradcafe

SirRiddy what's the effect of school size and population on acceptance? TAMUG has just 162 graduate students but they it's strictly a marine science college while TAMUCC has 1837 graduate students and they have many departments?

In some rankings I saw TAMUCC ranked higher than tamug, but I didn't see the ranking of their marine program clearly, just general school ranking, although they all run a joint program tamug, tamucc and tamu college station.

Tamucc has a higher acceptance rate, application fee is lower, but tamug has higher endowment and it's more specific to just marine biology.

I need your view on this and others.

Bro where did you see the rankings?

Was thinking of going for fire Protection Engineering

Hello everyone,
Please, find below the link to the magoosh Premium Videos I promised earlier. Couldn't use it as much as I would have loved to before I wrote my exam because I got it late. I hope it boosts your score as much as possible.

Y'all have been helpful in a lot of ways. And this is my own little way of giving back... for now.

NB: I'll pull it down in two weeks. For obvious reasons. Please, take advantage. Thank you and all the best in your prep.
