It is not certain if Costa is staying or leaving. Selling clubs will usually hike up a price by claiming a player is going nowhere

I wonder if most chelsea fans won't be glad to finally be rid of diego costa?

He has really had only 1 good season at the club and has consistently flirted with his former club athletico, sulked a lot, engaged in mutiny, troubled defenders and also scored some great goals!

But is he actually worth the hassle? He just does not seem completely sold on chelsea and his record in the champions league is average at best! And with the younger striking options available this summer is it time to try someone else?

Chelsea should sell Diego Costa and sign Gameiro of Sevilla. He is aggressive, a clinical finisher and has good runs and positioning.

It appears that, as the 2016/2017 season approaches, there has been a clampdown on player`s behaviour and in particular the manner in which players approach/speak to match officials.

Players now run the risk of red / yellow cards for transgressing the boundaries that have been agreed by the Premier League, English Football League and the Football Association.

Talking about the introduction of these new guidelines, the Premier League chairman Richard Scudamore has remarked,

'It is our collective position that these types of behaviour should no longer be tolerated.

'Things happen in the heat of the moment during fast and highly competitive football. We still want to see the passion fans enjoy and demand, but players and managers have to be aware there are lines that should not be crossed.'

Offences which could earn players a Yellow Card

• Visibly disrespectful behaviour to any match official.

• An aggressive response to decisions.

• Confronting an official face to face.

• Running towards an official to contest a decision.

• Offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or gestures towards match officials.

• Physical contact with any match official in a non-aggressive manner.

• A yellow card for at least one player when two or more from a team surround a match official.

New Red Card offences

• If a player confronts match officials and uses offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or gestures towards them.

• Physical contact with match officials in an aggressive or confrontational manner.

Interestingly, not a single Premier League player has been sent off for insulting or using abusive language towards a match official in the last five seasons!

Right, who can we see suffering the indignity of taking an early bath in the early stages of the season as the players start to get to grips with the new code of conduct? A) Diego Costa B) Diego Costa C) Diego Costa D)Diego Costa

I don't know why they haven't enforced these rules earlier.

In Rugby, if you backchat the ref say after a penalty, he can actually do the equivalent of moving the wall back.

In fact, the players on the Rugby Union pitch call the ref Sir.

I've read some really interesting things today.

John Swift who has now signed for Reading is one of those youth players, who some of us complain about not seeing enough of in the first team.

This is what he has to say on Youth Progression at Chelsea.

It’s obviously hard for any young players because it’s such a big team and there are so many big players there,” said the 21-year-old - who turned down a contract offer to stay with the Premier League giants.

“And there is so much pressure on the club to be high in the league and do well in the Champions League. They have high expectations for every single game they go into. So it is difficult for the manager to put young players in.

Notice that he actually doesn't blame the club or the way it's run.

He actually acknowledges how difficult it is for the managers to pick these untried and untested youth given the immense pressure to succeed at the club.

It's particular interesting for the fact that he mentions that he was training with the first team, so it's not like the managers did not know who he was.

"All you want is to try and prove yourself but it's really hard for a player to get into the first-team. Everyone knows that. You go back for pre-season, you train with the first-team and try and show what you can do. But there are obviously so many other players that you are in and amongst."

This echoes what Nathan Ake said here:

You need to show you are ready and there is so much pressure [at Chelsea]. It’s a bit different to here[Watford] because at Chelsea you have to be champions and have a good season. There is so much pressure and if you are young you might feel that a bit more.

He goes on to point out that the managers actually keep tabs on what's happening in u-21

when Mourinho came straight away I was dropped back to the Under-21s and that was quite hard for me. I thought ‘What have I done wrong?’

“I didn’t let my head go down and worked hard for the Under-21s. Because of that, in January I got called back to the first team

But even while training with the first team, Jose didn't think he was ready:

“I asked the manager what I could improve, if there were things I could adapt in my game,” he says. “But Mourinho said I was training well and performing well in the games I played but that I had to wait for my chance. And I could understand it, as there were so many big players at the club.”

Its not just about youth. It's about the 'right' youth and/or the 'right experience"

Zouma and Christensen have only 14 months age gap between them.

Yet Zouma isn't just in the first team...he relegated Cahill to the bench. Whilst Christensen is still in the loan system.

The difference is simple. Christensen joined our youth system at the age of 16 from the Bronby reserves. At that same age, Zouma made his professional debut for St Etienne.

Christensen played his first competitive game of his career at the age of 19. Zouma aged 19 had 3 full seasons of professional footy behind him and had earned his move to Chelsea.

14 months age difference, but the difference is clear.

And THIS is the reason why I support the loan system vigorously.

And THIS is the reason why I support the loan system vigorously.

WIth the vigorous loan system in place, how many of them have actually made it into Chelsea first team in the last 10yrs

Or whats the point of gathering these young players in the academy play them, loan them out and never getting any benefit out of them?

Of these loan program I can only point to Cortouis in 10yrs, let me know of any other who came to academy or came as a young player, went on loan and came back to break into the Chelsea first team

Or whats the purpose? I believe some of these loanees, Chelsea still pay their salary and money spent on them in youth team. what difference would it have made in the past 10yrs if you didnt have a youth program and actually bought Cortouis for market value from Atletico? Maybe it might have been cheaper

Its not about quantity. It's about quality.

For instance, if we look at Bayern now, there are only 2 academy products in the first team ( i won't count Hummels because his education and experience came from elsewhere).

Where are Muller and Alaba's academy mates?

The fact is, if you're going to pick any untested youth, their talent has to be undeniable. It's no coincidence that the likes of Miller and Alaba and Lahm or Schweinsteiger would go on to be world class players...

Plus the Bayern reserve system plays professional footy anyway, and this these guys have more professional experience from an early age and thus have the developmental advantage of their age mates in England.

Secondly the loan system also allows us to develop players for sale,so that the ones we deem not good enough can still be sold for good cash.

^^^^^ I hear you Nihilist and I understand your position on the subject matter however, I still do not agree with you on this!

Just as you can point out players who had to play through lower divisions/ leagues or embark on loan moves to gather much experience before making the senior team, I can point you towards the direction of players who broke into their respective first team without necessarily doing any of the above.

My question for you is;

1) With the amount of youth players back home, and those scattered all over Europe, why haven't we been able to integrate a single youth player into the senior team for over 10years?

There is no way you can prove all this players have been uber useless or not talented enough throughout this period.

To make matters now worse, most clubs would rather develop theirs before considering loanees.

Yes, we all crave to see a world class player/players graduate into the senior team from the youth system however, what if this players won't ever be or turn a world class player, what do we do?

Nihilist, there is little or no guarantee that a youth player will ever become a world class from day one, except for some chosen few. However, many of this players can do fantastic jobs if given the opportunity. If given the opportunity , they can be an integral part of the first team! Maybe not as world class talents but, as players with raw hunger, passion and the spirit/blood of CFC imbedded in them.

Why sell PVA and Bertrand just to end up with baba rahman!? Why do we send players like bamford or solanke on loans just to loan falcao and pato? Of what benefit is it to sign old men like djiblahblahblah, omeruo and hector, when we have home grown youth players like Ake, Chris and kalas waiting to get a chance someday, then loan them out all out?

Truth is, we are always going to suffer in the long run with the way and manner we have been handling this young players.

It's very easy to make these conclusions Nihilist. The true question is, would Zouma have made it to the first team if he had been with Chelsea since 11?
