i really do not understand the press release by LUTH.

1- They said Mayowa is an old patient of theirs already on treatment for another ailment??

what i understood from this is that she was misdiagnosed and was treated for different ailment instead of cancer for a very long time.
The family discovered it was stage 4 cancer after getting diagnosis from another hospital.

2- This 31year-old lady came into the Private Wing of LUTH on Monday, 25th July, 2016 with a history and clinical features of an intra-abdominal mass. The family and the patient brought along some results of laboratory investigations ordered and done from outside LUTH.

They only knew she had cancer or "mass " after she was diagnosed by another hospital.

Why in the holy hell would the family continue treatment with luth if they weren't able to diagnose the right disease in the first instance?
Now they are saying they wanted to conduct another batch of test?? I believe this process will take another couple of months and its obvious every second is crucial for mayowa.

3- the family however requested to fly Miss Ahmed outside the country barely 24 hours after her admission in LUTH,
So, basically they have been treating her for a mis-dagnosed ailment for a long time and only admitted her after they came with test results from other hospitals.

Nigerian public hospitals are a disgrace.

Come on guys, let's be real here. Most of us will go above and beyond for the people we love. I wouldn't wait for any quack doctor in a public hospital to give me diagnosis before making my own moves.

I don't see any scam here.
I don't either. Besides, if you watched the video, mayowa said " she's presently at home" this further corroborates.their claim that she was brought back to luth only two/ three days ago. The video must have been made before her family returned her to luth, expecting the doctors to prepare her for the flight. Meanwhile they are insistinh they will do another batch of tests.

Never will you find a quack doctor in LUTH. You will need them soon.

the mere fact that they disclosed her medical information further buttresses the fact that they are quacks.
In saner climes, this would earn them a million dollar law suit cos there is something called "doctor-patient" confidentiality.
The hospital cannot release details of treatment to third parties.

Asin these Luth people are just so stupid. Even if they discovered earlier that she has cancer, the family of the lady can decide to treat her anywhere they want. I can't even believe these animal doctors will be releasing a stupid press statement. People that should be ashamed that they could not detect the cancer on time.

The family members don't trust nigerian hospitals just like our crazy politicians don't. To even think that these stooopid doctors are always going on strike and many of them don't know jack. Na by force to treat person for una hospital. Even if her sickness is at the final stage, they expect the family to just give up like that. Na so the bas..tards kill da grin with thier incompetence.

yeye dey smell we go soon know who is to be blamed( and I know is not gonna be linda ikeji ) cuz from the onset she wanted the best for mayowa by using her platform to bring to the public mayowa's condition not like the agbero Stella dimokorkus who neither donated nor published mayowa's. health issue bt was so quick to judge someone who helped in her own little way

modified: linda ikeji never said mayowa's claim of ovarian cancer was a scam rather it came to their notice that some family members were trying to divert the money made for her treatment , toyin raised the alarm and linda notified the public we need to remove sentiments in our judging of this case the person who we ought to think about now is mayowa who needs medical care now nothing else .

the family keep saying toyin and Co wanted some percentage from the money donated Wat is the big deal in it, as long as u've gotten more than the money needed for her treatment I myself will gladly give u some percentage before u even ask of it as long as it doesn't cut through the estimated amount needed for her treatment cuz maybe witout ur help our plea won't have been heard a lot of people are in that condition with no body to hear their cries
Linda may mean well for her but she spoilt it all by lying in her blog that the doctors at LUTH said her condition is so critical that she has only few days left to live and would still die regardless of anywhere she's taken to, when in actual sense the doctors have just confirmed with this Press release that they're yet to ascertain her problem definitively.

That is why she is ANGRY and that is why it is a SCAM. The family told her this. Made us all believe that LUTH referred them to a U.S hospital, quoted price of 30k, when no U.S hospital has seen d file or agreed to take the case. When one tells lies, the whole thing becomes suspect. Now LUth is confirming that it is a lie, no referral was made and yet some people choose to blame LUTH? Seriously? No wonder people get away with everything here. Now it is no longer U.S but UAE. Did UAE also quote 30k too? We donated good money because we felt sorry but we expect accountability and transparency that my money is not being used to buy land for somebody instead of someone's healthcare

Sorry about the loss of your mum.

However, what kind of kidney problem did she have?

Do you know one of the commonest causes of kidney failure is hypertension?

Do you also know that patients with background kidney disease almost always come down with hypertension?

Its a two way thing.

The kidney is involved in regulating the blood pressure, and any problem with it will make the bp go high.

However, patients with uncontrolled high bp from other causes will inadvertently with time have kidney failure.

Re: Mayowa Ahmed: LUTH Releases Press Statement On #savemayowa by Toksytoks(m): 7:04pm On Jul 29, 2016
Your reasoning is shallow..far too shallow.
Mayowa is an old patient means she has had a prior encounter at the hospital which may be unrelated to this case. According to her, she is a Sickle cell disease patient, may be she had been managed in LUTH for sickle cell crisis as a child. Hospitals keep records for years.

You have no idea about her previous experience or encounter at LUTH but you are quick to jump into a conclusion of misdiagnosis.

Abdominal masses are very easy to pick even to the layman and a tertiary hospital will not base there report on another report. If LUTH is gonna refer her, they will have to write their report according to their findings. This they cannot do in 24hrs. The whole thing appears shady, you can't get a referral in 24hrs.

If she is already at stage 4 ovarian cancer with sickle cell and liver metastases then no hospital will attempt any procedure on her. Not even Emory in the US...at best she will be referred to a hospice home.

Any surgical procedure will take her life faster than the cancer itself at this state. She can't even survive anaesthesia which usually is a problem in sickle cell patients.

Transporting her to either Dubai or US is another issue..she will need an air ambulance. All these weren't properly ironed out.

Don't be too quick to make statement like this in public. It only shows you rarely think critically.

Atimes it's good to withhold comments, especially when one is ignorant of the subject matter. We read your comment aloud in the hospital here, and people have been cracking their ribs. It obviously shows you know next to nothing about Medicare, and I advise you keep your mouth shut, and stop making yourself a laughing stock.
All the interpretations you gave to LUTH Press Release are warped.

This is what it means:

1. She's an old patient who came with another ailment means, she's a regular or known patient of the hospital who had been coming for certain treatments; but this time around she came with another complain of abdominal swelling. So, being an old patient does not mean she had been coming overtime and they have not been able to diagnose what's wrong with her.

2. That her family requested to fly her abroad does not mean her condition was wrongly diagnosed. LUTH is a tertiary institution. Most patients who come in are either referred from another secondary hospital or have been treated in another hospital, and might have undergone some laboratory investigations in those hospitals. And she might have been told she had cancer. But usually LUTH would insist on doing its own investigations to be pretty sure. The family might feel they already knew what was wrong with the patient, and hence requested to fly her abroad. This does not suggest incompetence on the part of LUTH. Patients have the right to request to be discharge from the hospital at any stage of their treatment, even against medical advice. That's why DAMA (Discharge Against Medical Advice) form is available in the hospitals. The patient or the informant would be asked to fill the form before such discharge is granted.
The patient in question had not even spent 48 hours in LUTH. Some of you come to the hospital, and tell doctor you have typhoid, and you expect him to commence treatment straightaway. Only quacks in chemist or drugstores do that.

3. That LUTH doctors are quacks is laughable!
It's obvious some of you out there don't even know what quack means.
No quack can work in LUTH or any teaching hospital.
Funny enough, when you even travel to abroad for treatment, you might be surprised that it's Nigeria-trained doctors who would attend to you.

4. If LUTH had not arrived at any diagnosis, and had not in any way indicated that the condition was life-threatening, i wonder why the hush hush for overseas treatment. I also wonder where the referral letter to overseas emanated from. This makes the whole issue suspicious.

There is no scam here.
1. Her family wants the best treatment for her.
2. They need to fly her abroad instead of keeping her at luth which we all know have a reputation for misdiagnosis and given wrong treatment to patients.
3. They can't afford it and ask membersof the public for help.
4. Help comes and the amount exceeds the amount needed.
5. Luth says they didn't refer her to any other hospital and the family admits that decision to fly her out was solely their decision.
So where is the scam here

I think the referral letter came from one of the hospitals who diagnosed the cancer. Though I'm confused: I thought I read a report that her sister said it was 3 consultants who studied her case and eventually started suspecting cancer and that happened at LUTH. But she's not been there long enough. I'm rather confused now. I believe what happened was that some medical person from one of the hospitals she went to, saw the online social media financial drive and contacted the people organising it that her case was actually very bad and probably not operable. So those organisers then felt the family was trying to scam the public by raising money for a case that was not going to end well, most likely. The public erred because they read the initial broadcast, didn't understand she had stage 4 cancer which had spread plus sickle cell anaemia and assumed all she needed was surgery and care to recover.

If I knew all those, I would pray for her but assume the worst. Sickle cell and cancer is like having a car accident and then having another car accident in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. Only God can help her and the family can do what they can, but truly this is not one of those issues throwing money at will solve.

Besides, why should a hospital disclose patient's case to the whole world?
Where is the doctor-patient confidentiality?
Bunch of quacks!!

let me shed light on your ignorance while still keeping secrecy.
she's ab old patient and she's being managed for a condition that has nothing to do with the cancer. one of the chronic manageable condition. however she did not present in Luth for this present condition , she choose to go to another hospital until few days ago when she was referred to Luth for further mgt . By that time her condition was bad and Luth started optimizing her which her family opposes and request for immediate referral out of the country. she wouldn't have survived that flight .Don't just post anything cos u must insult our healthcare system

Ecclesiastes 10: 19
money answers everything.

I believe the actress wanted a percentage of the funds and the family declined, then the actress told the blogger and it led to this.

I think there is need for a referral letter first before proceeding to travel with the lady. If the patient is very sick how will she survive the flight?

This situation get K-leg, I pray Mayowa survives this.
