Why not the Mbombe 8?

First off, the 57mm on that vehicle simply would not be effective in the Nigeria battle-space, soldiers aren't actually fighting across mountains. Infact, that 57mm module is simply over-kill.

As a platform the Mbombe 8 is modern, but it's a new platform that would require a lot more further testing. Price has to come into play, how much is it per unit, it also doesn't seem to have an amphibious variant. Personally if i were to make that decision, I'll stick with the Mbombe 4, until a better suited Mbombe 8 is available.

I was talking about the platform, not the weapons system you chaps would want to mount. And yea, that 57mm is ridiculous.
I think you mean you'd stick with the Mbombe 6 wink

Expect for the jet engines, as Patches pointed out sad

Expensive, more fuel consumption and they prefer a constant rather than a fluctuating load. Turbo-prop should have been used instead. I agree.

As a platform, i think it requires additional testing. Aesthetically, it looks great and a 30mm would be more than adequate (I know what you said in your reply).

However, I'll stick with the Mbombe 6 (thanks), seems like a more reliable system at this point.

Realistically, our best option is South-Africa's Paramount Group Mbombe 4.....

IFVs are by definition meant to transport troops to the front and also support them, and the Mbombe is designed to do just that. The Mbombe 4 is my best option.

Honestly I can't agree with you more on this vehicle. It's an excellent off-roader and I can't doubt their expertise when it comes to protection, it's also an MRAP so it fits current and future threats.

As for tracked IFV, obviously something amphibious, I'll say we go for the BMP-3.

"The main armament of the BMP-3 is one 100mm 2A70 semi-automatic rifled gun / missile launcher, which is stabilised in two axes and can fire either 3UOF HE-FRAG rounds or 3UBK10 anti-tank guided missiles. Effective range for the HE-FRAG round is 4,000m. Muzzle velocity is 250m/s. 22 HE-FRAG rounds can be carried in the automatic loader, total ammunition load being 40 rounds. Rate of fire is ten rounds a minute. The gun fires the 3UBK10 anti-tank guided missile round, which consists of the 9M117 laser beamriding missile and container. This missile is used in the Bastion missile system (Nato designation AT-10 Stabber). It can engage tanks with explosive reactive armour as well as slow, low-flying targets such as helicopters. The BMP-3 is fitted with an automatic fire control system with manual override for both gunner and commander. It includes a 1V539 ballistic computer, 2E52 electro-mechanical armament stabiliser and 1D16 laser rangefinder. Second armament includes one 30 mm 2A72 coaxial cannon and one 7.62 mm PKT coaxial machine gun. The dual-feed 30 mm 2A72 cannon can engage ground targets at ranges of 1,500 to 2,000 m and helicopters out to 4,000 m. It can fires a full range of ammunition as AP-I, HE-I and HE-T. Three smoke grenade dischargers are mounted on each side at the front of the turret. One 7.62 mm PKT machine gun is mounted either side of the hull, firing forwards and these are operated by one of the front three crew members."

Patches what do you mean by this?

Dusty air-strips = rocks

Rock + Jet Turbine = Multi-million dollar insurance claims

If we had a vast fleet of turbo-prop C-130's or whatever, and we had money to spare we could get it as a dedicated domestic transport, or maybe a dedicated platform for the Para's.

But we need a "go anywhere do anything" plane, which rules out turbines.

Yes, it doesn't set the world alight interms of it's design or armament, but it's an off-road vehicle that works. It's basically an MRAP on 6 wheels which can be fitted with a 30mm/ ATGM or 12.7mm RWS.

Unit price - $1,000,000, it has a decent price range, this was what was sold to Jordan and it includes local assembly (Jobs). The South-Africans are very good in building MRAPs and general land systems the Mbombe 4 is yet another example of that. Excellent off-road capabilities, and in the future ceramic armour or Dyneema which Proforce Nigeria has been experimenting with could be added to improve crew protection.

The vehicle would suffer in the south of Nigeria, for the south, we would require tracked vehicles, however for the Central and Northern regions i don't see what can stop it.

Fire power, it carries a 30 mm RWS, there's also the ATGM variant and the 12.7mm variant. However there are multiple choices of combined RWS available in the market we could go for. The Slovenians just launched a beautiful system.

Local assembly prospects, Jordan is buying only 50 units and it includes a local manufacturing agreement, the Mbombe 4 is also manufactured in Kazhkztan. So the manufacturer would be willing to build right here in Nigeria.

According to your old order of battle you have 6 mechanised battalions. If half get the MBOMBE, thats 708 units that will be needed, minimum.

I started writing this post to point out it would be too expensive... but actually, $700 million is quite do-able over a long production run, say 5 years thats $150 million per annum. Not too bad.

BMP-3's performance in Yemen has been p1ss-poor. Paper thin armor, and troops have to exit by crouching, climbing over the engine and off the roof - exposing themselves to fire and slowing them down.

There are better options. Pic very much related.

I also thought about the Otokar Tulpar but I'm a bit skeptical about Turkish engineering plus that country is a little bit unpredictable.

Who heard about the Turkish governments request to the presidency for Nigeria to shutdown all 17 Turkish schools in Nigeria ?

let me advice u from my experience
get the vehicle from the continent (Africa) itself .
u will get a optimized version which is already built to work flawlessly in the hot dry and trying conditions of Africa.
it is a headache to get a system from colder countries and keep banging ur head when the engines , lubrication system , electronics break down under intense heat and dust.
ask me i have faced it .
diagnosing and location of the fault due to heat and dust is another headache , takes lots of time and money.

get the sub systems from other sources like non hull penetrating RCWS which will require almost zero re-engineering of the carrier vehicle.
armouring can be done depending on requirements be it field requirements or base requirements
rest is self explanatory.

Interesting.
This got me wondering if the above is also a concern around the C17 Globemaster. (Henry240 pardon me for inserting a picture of an aircraft which no African country uses; I am merely curious. smiley)

Morocco Supports Nigeria Militarily to Fight against Boko Haram By Youssef Igrouane - August 1, 2016 , 2:31 pm Rabat – Morocco has decided to support Nigeria militarily in the fight against Boko Haram, a terrorist organization based in Nigeria, Cameron and Chad, according to French news website Le Monde. According to a Moroccan government official quoted by Le Monde, King Mohammed VI has authorized the provision of military equipment and supplies- except for lethal munitions- to Nigeria, in hope that giving military assistance to Morocco’s traditional ally will help to fight the recurrent incursions by Boko Haram in Nigeria. “Discussions are still underway to decide the exact nature of the military equipment and terms and delivery’s procedures to the [Nigerian] authorities.” The government’s official was quoted by Le Monde as saying. The decision to support Nigeria came after King Mohammed VI formally requested to return to the African Union (AU) via a message to the AU summit in Rwanda two weeks ago. This decision is regarded as an unprecedented initiative from Morocco to supply the military apparatus to help sub-Saharan countries to combat terrorism. Last June, Boko Haram committed a bombing attack that killed at least 11 people in a mosque in Cameroon. In the same month, Medicins Sans Frontieres reported that almost 200 Nigerian refugees who escaped from Boko Haram have died from starvation and malnutrition in the Bama refugee camp, Nigeria. Boko Haram recently joined ISIS and now calls itself the “ISIS of West Africa” and claims that Western education is a sin.

Very nice video. The Air Force needs to do away with those Alpha jets, they are becoming the "major source of my persistent eye problems".

The NN used to be well ahead, but for sometime now, they have become invisible like we are "seeing a ghost movie". They need to up their game.

We need those JF-17s since like yesterday, and if we can get Tucanos to replace those Alpha jets, that would simply go along way in improving general effectiveness of air operations.

The Alpha jets simply need to go!!

The C-17 is for long haul flights only. So a Jet engine for it is very desirable. The C-17 and C-5 both have jet engines, and both are designed primarily for long haul flights.

Unfortunately those in-charge of making the video don't know their own country's army. They added footage from the Malian army's operation against militants in Timboctou.

For Tracked vehicles, i can't say, i watched "Tank vs Terrorist" which Patches689 shared last year and i hold a lot of admiration for the vehicle. It's an excellent amphibious vehicle, with heavy firepower.

Tuplar from Turkey like you've highlighted is another good one, however it is a new, untested platform. It is a very nice vehicle though.

Nigerian ORBAT has changed over the years. I can also assure you that the Nigerian army as presently constituted would not order 708 IFVs. Those Civil war posturing is over.

We won't see that, a maximum 300 vehicles is more a realistic posture.
