Hello well wishers of sachng, thanks for all the ideas shared earlier.
I want to make this product sourcecode open to the world to speedy the development.
Is this a good path to follow, what are the disadvantages and advantages, should I make all the code open or some part of it since its a product.
Please advice.

1. Do not make it opensource if you know you cannot handle people getting to see your source codes and thereby developing an idea or perhaps a search engine from it.

2. Was or is google search script open?

3. Must you finish this search engine this year? Why not continue to work on it until you get it right? The time you dedicate to it matters a lot, you don't expect to develop a search engine that will rival bing, google, etc in 5 months, do you?

And yes you could just open source the thing and give yourself rest of mind

Open sourcing it is a bad idea. How many commercial engines are open source?
I think the problem is u havent really taken time to plan this out. Firstly, u need excessive work and dedication. Pick parts of the app and work on it one at a time. Make sure the parts are very decoupled from each other. For instance, pick the crawler aspect and give it your best shot. Work on each part as a separate project. Spend months on each part if required. Just take your time and pick the right tools for your job. You need to spend your on the important parts of your infrastructure. Give extra work on the indexing system. The web app that serves users is the simplest part of it. I wouldnt worry on it just yet. Work on your crawler code and index a large quantity of information. Keep coding, when u get stuck ask your developer friends for help but dont give any one direct access to the whole code.
Finally, please and please just have the mindset you are doing it for fun and learnin purpose. Remove that idea of rivaling google just yet. Try and build a great product first.

I do not support open-sourcing it at all, it is a very great mistake.

Sell your script online for $5000 per user will be better . No knowledge is wasted . Since your are discouraged of the project and sach is not offline.

Maybe you think of making money quick from this, don't look at money now, rather develop the application and your self, Make it a long term project, work on it gradually..

I say go open source.. anything you open source has higher chances of kicking off.. especially something complex as a search engine, you still get ownership rights.

Err, dude, you should look at things from different perspectives. @ booyakasha, so you believe that it is better he makes it open-source eh?
I too believe he should make it open-source, after he has gotten it working to a great extent.

Me thinks open sourcing it would help further development. I would advise you to see it as fun project rather than a product because you may not be able to rival bigger tech coy that do search. Google does search better and even if you have maybe hundreds of engineers and devs working on sachng, you can only begin to try competing. Have you heard of shodan and duckduckgo? If you havent, this should tell you how google has monopolized searching. Yahoo just got acquired by Verizon cos they couldnt compete with google.

Sure I can't rival Google at the moment, but am sure of one thing.
Opensorcing it is a good idea, because I have never seen an open source search engine.
