The Blues boss has confirmed that he was on board with the decision to bid for the Brazilian and made the move in combination with the club's directors


Antonio Conte has insisted he gave his approval to Chelsea's decision to spend £32 million on David Luiz on transfer deadline day.

The Blues unsuccessfully pursued the likes of Kalidou Koulibaly, Alessio Romagnoli and Niklas Sule before landing Luiz and continue to be linked with further defensive additions in the January transfer window.

But Conte has dismissed suggestions their bid for the Brazilian centre-back was a last resort and says it had his backing as well as the club's.

"Never do we take the decisions [alone]," Conte told reporters. "We take the decisions together with the club. In every situation, we make the decisions together.

"Never me or the club, always together. I think this is always the right way, you want to build something important for the people."

Chelsea's defence - and Luiz's performances within it - has been improved by Conte's introduction of a 3-4-3 system in their last two Premier League matches, both of which have ended in wins and clean sheets.

Luiz is likely to start against Manchester United on Sunday and Conte was keen to talk up his ability to bring the ball out from the back in his new system.

"I think that David Luiz has good experience," he added. "He won a lot and played in a good team. He is very good with a good technique and when you have David Luiz, you can play from the back.

"In my idea of football I love this, to start from the back. For me, he is a good defender and we have worked a lot with him and the other defenders to stay, always, focused in every single moment of the game. But I am pleased with David Luiz."

For me there are three things we need to do to avoid defeat

1. Diego Costa must stay cool at all cost, Jose has always been a master of Mind games and with Costa form of late what it means is that Blind/smalling and Baily especially would be deployed to close mark and irritate him. I hope Conte and Captain Terry talk sense into him and i pray he heeds it or else we could be looking at a Red card scenario just like the method employed to defeat Arsenal during the first leg.

2. Hazard and who ever partners him at the other side of costa have to be on form to exploit the spaces created, as nateevs rightly observed Jose would make use of his full-backs to press our wing-backs down and they would have to closely operate with the Marcos and Moses to make sure the transition from defence to attack isn't completely shut down.

3.Luiz and Azpi would also have to deal with the runs of the wing forwards and full-backs with the help of Moses and Marcos of course. How good they are at doing this would determine how many crosses and passes would enter our box taking in mind Ibra aerial prowess and acrobatics, I doubt Cahill would be able to hold too much pressure and with the muscle men in midfield- Pogba and Fellaini, Matic would have to sit deep to tackle and also give back Steel for Steel and with the limited passing range of Matic it means Kante would have lot of runnings to do to receive the ball to move it forward and also help with the defensive duties against three in centre of the midfield I hope his energy reserves keep up.
All in all this should be a high intensity match if Manure comes out to play and any error on both sides would be punish.

My prediction would be 2-1 in our favour

Sky and BT are the ones that drive the TV schedule process. Because each of them has to have a relative high profile game each weekend for their ratings, scheduling has to be done in a way to keep both parties happy. This is one of the drivers that led to MNF and now FNF.

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte needs to stop blaming Jose Mourinho

It’s been ten months since Jose Mourinho was last in charge of Chelsea football club. Antonio Conte would still have you believe that the players at Stamford Bridge are still scarred by his tenure. It’s time for Conte to stop using Mourinho’s reign as an excuse for his current struggles.
I have to admit that I was fairly surprised to hear Conte make statements about how his current players are still reeling for Mourinho’s mind games. In particular, the former Italy boss claimed it’s “very difficult” to lift some of his player’s spirits after the disappointment of last year. Forgive me for my blunt reaction, but isn’t managing the mental state of the squad squarely in Conte’s job description?

I suppose I could understand this issue if Mourinho had just left the club. That isn’t what we’re talking about here. Again, it’s been ten months since he left Stamford Bridge. Every returning member of the squad has experienced a caretaker manager and a full offseason since his departure. That should be more than enough time to get over hurt feelings.

In the end, that’s the only thing Chelsea players can really blame Mourinho for. The majority of them experienced quite a bit of success under The Special One. The good times included a pretty dominant season which concluded with a Premier League title.

Yes, the end was a disaster, but Chelsea’s professional football players should have put Mourinho’s reign behind them by now. The fact that Conte is still using him as an excuse should be very troubling for the fans at Stamford Bridge.

It speaks to Conte’s own inability to connect with the squad. Does anyone really believe that Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool squad is still suffering from the malaise of the Brendan Rodgers era? Absolutely not. The reason is that Klopp’s magnetic personality makes it easy for his squad to forget about the struggles of the past.
Conte doesn’t have that sort of magnetism. He’s an excellent tactician, but he doesn’t have the personality to bind players to him emotionally. That lack of charisma is causing him a great deal of trouble at the moment.

Instead of facing those troubles head on, Conte is opting to make Mourinho a scapegoat. That might satisfy some Chelsea fans and perhaps even Roman Abramovich in the short-term, but it’s a flimsy excuse that will fall apart quickly. The sooner Antonio Conte stops blaming Jose Mourinho for Chelsea’s struggles, the sooner he can succeed at Stamford Bridge.
